IF YOU HAD TO MAKE THE NEXT SONIC GAME...
Posts
Sonic games (these days) are terrible. The lil' blue bastard we grew to love in the time of Sega Genesis has sunk so low, he may as well be six feet under by now. The last good game he was in was Smash Bros., for crap's sake!
But, I don't think the situation's hopeless. There's still plenty of potential in the Sonic franchise; it just needs to be implemented differently. And by differently, I mean NOT giving Sonic a sword or turning him into a werewolf.
Unfortunately, it seems the Sonic fanbase isn't able to do much better, considering the level of quality of most Sonic fangames we see.
So I'm asking YOU, the sharp folks of RMN, to give the hedgehog what he deserves! No, I don't want you to bury him, I want you to come up with a concept for a new Sonic game! Where do you think the series should go next? How would you redeem Sonic from his fall from grace?
This is all pure speculation, and I don't expect any of these ideas to actually be made into games. But don't limit yourselves in your thinking! It's not like it has to be done in RM* or anything.
Seriously, if you could do anything you wanted with Sonic, what would you do? Be they story ideas, gameplay ideas, or otherwise, I want to hear 'em! Go, go, go! How would you save Sonic?
I have my own idea I'd like to share, but I'll post it at a later time.

Turn Sonic back into a 2d platformer. Not some crappy 2.5d game with liner level movement, not a 3d game with guns. It needs to be stripped back down to the basics and then taken on a different path of evolution.

My solution:
1) Cut everybody except Robotnik (fuck whoever thoughts Eggman was a good name/should literally translate his name/whatever caused Robotnik->Eggman), Sonic, and Tails
2) Take Sonic 1 or 2
3) Make 3d (although gameplay is still 2d)
Focus on making a decent game before trying to make a good/great game
Also fire everybody who was involved in Sonic 2006 (except Hi

Actually, I think they did a great job with Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. It was relatively fast paced, the platforming wasn't horrible, and having a chao to take care of kept it rather entertaining. It went downhill after that. (Although, I still completed DX Director's Cut with 100%, Big the Cat was a freaking moron and should die) I think we should keep the 3D because most people won't play a 2D game on a higher gen console anymore unless it's an RPG, and turn up the speed to insanely fast without crappy concepts. Just a solidly new game with a new adventure, but still having Sonic go after Eggman(Robotnik). They could have a lot of insanely fast paced moments where he's just boltin down some kind of hill where there are rocks in the way and such with the background blurrin by like crazy for added effect, and you have to press reaction buttons ( the A button icon appears, and you press it, random buttons though) and it makes you dodge bolders in your way or have that with boss fights and such. No more new characters, no more new goals. No more sonic abilities. No crappy backstory for said abilities. Just crack induced speed with him goin after his arch-nemesis in 3D with some reaction commands sounds like a pretty sweet sonic game to me.
quick time events. you have just described quick time events.

Continue to make handheld Sonic games, they're actually quite good. Did anyone play Sonic Rush for the DS?
author=Tau link=topic=3768.msg75454#msg75454 date=1242559571I believe you've missed the point. Suppose instead that Sonic Team abducted you and held you at gunpoint until you gave them an idea for the next Sonic game.
I wouldn't. Sell off the rights and earn me some $$$$
@F-G: I liked Sonic Adventure as well. I think that's near the point where everything started to fall apart for Sonic. I wouldn't really consider it a recent title, though.
Anyway, if I were to make the next Sonic game, I would do as a lot of you have suggested already and go back to what made the series popular in the first place: fast-paced action-packed platforming. I'd make the game a sidescroller, but the environments, characters and whatnot would all be in 3D.
As for story, I would only introduce one new character: an evil genius who's been following the exploits of Dr. Robotnik and his conflicts with Sonic for a long time. He'd have been salvaging the broken remains of Robotnik's machines, studying them, and improving their designs. He emerges now to compete with/overthrow Robotnik and possible deal with Sonic and friends in the process. The story itself would play out like Sonic Adventure; following different characters through their roles in the game and connecting all the story paths in the end.
The characters I'd make playable would be Sonic (duh), Tails, Knuckles, and Robotnik. Each of them would have their own story path and stages to go through, and the stage designs would be dependent on each of their unique abilities. Sonic's levels would be curvy and fast paced, Tails would do a lot more flying, Knuckles would have to glide and climb walls, and Robotnik would use the various gadgets he's attached to that floating black-bottomed machine of his to progress through his levels (including, but not limited to, the checker wrecker ball). And, no, Robotnik would NOT be working with Sonic, but rather to his own ends trying to stop this new villain.
tl;dr version: I'd go back to the classic platforming gameplay while keeping the modern graphics, and I'd try to have a more fleshed out plot involving multiple characters, story paths, and play styles without introducing anything too new or contrived. I can go into more detail if anyone would like.
I've never played a Sonic game but I think they're all about speed right?
So it should probably be a game about insane amounts of speed. Perhaps something like a simpler version of Mirror's Edge with Sonic. Sonic doing parkour on time-limited levels and going at insane speeds always blurring the details of the environment (though it should be colourful so that the player can tell distinctive features.
Some sort of bullet-time might be good but I think it'd be best if you could make the game without it. Perhaps some sort of hyperspeed instead that stops time while moving.
To make it accessible to the current generation of gamers it should be fairly forgiving and checkpoints should be everywhere (or alternatively it could go the Prince of Persia route and make the player unkillable, which could be a good idea if it was possible to make it make sense in-game).
The challenge in the game would be the time-trial modes as well a ring collecting. Alternate routes and certain speeds could give extra rings (perhaps the hyperspeed feature, when time stops as you're going insanely fast certain otherwise invisible rings would become visible and available to get)
I wonder if it would be a good idea to make the game on-rails so that you can only regulate the speed of Sonic (Fast, Insanely Fast and Hyperspeed). It would probably make it easier to control since I guess the biggest problem is how to convey the speed while still make it possible for players to feel like they're in control.
So yeah. I think a Sonic Mirror's Edge might be a good idea.

Sonic Heroes was fun.
RUNNING AT THE SPEED OF SOUND OH MY GO- oh I have to switch to knuckles to solve this puzzle. OH MY GOD IM BREAKING THE FUCKING SOUND BARRI- oh gotta switch to tails..
Yeah that's fun.
I liked the Sonic Adventure games; I don't think too many people are trying to say they were bad.
I would agree if it weren't for THOSE STUPID TREASURE HUNTING LEVELS.
As for making the next Sonic game, first I'd redesign sonic:

At first glance there's really no difference, but with closer look you can see that the new sonic has GODDAMN LONG LEGS so really I'd just revert it back to the old sonic with some minor retouches.
Cut everybody except Robotnik (fuck whoever thoughts Eggman was a good name/should literally translate his name/whatever caused Robotnik->Eggman), Sonic, and Tails
This, but hell, even knuckles was okay.
2.5 gameplay
Also this but apply some of the sonic rush formula in some parts of the game.

IM GOING TO IGNORE THE FACT THAT YOU CAN GO THROUGH SONIC THE HEDGEHOG WITHOUT STOPPING FOR A SPLIT SECOND TO SWITCH TO ANOTHER CHARACTER AND FOCUS ON THE FACT THAT THIS SPEEDRUN WAS NOT FULLY COMPLETED.
Cool argument bro.

Also, I thought Sonic Heroes was fun and thoroughly believe the only reason people didn't like it was because it wasn't focused solely on Sonic. If that was a game with nothing to do with the Sonic series then people would've probably loved it.
No, if Sonic Heroes had nothing to do with the sonic series people simply would have never even played it.
I agree with everyone who says go back to the basics and/or remake Sonic 2 (actually I liked Sonic 3 more myself, but I played that one more...)
I haven't played Megaman 9 but I hear alot of people say its great. How'd Capcom fix it's Megaman problem? By going back to the basics. Sega should do the same.
