STARTING UP A NEW PROJECT... IN?

So. The time has come for me, after many months of debating with myself, to start seriously on a new project. I know I may have said I wouldn't work with RM2k3 anymore (besides the occasional Release Something all-custom shorties) and I still think it fits pretty well with me NOT WANTING to use the program for anything "serious" anymore; I've had my fair share of it since it came out. Actually, over the years I've come to realise that barely enjoy the standard Jrpg-ish genre that this program was designed for.

However, I found an old script for a very COMPLETE and pretty nice JRPG that I worked out some years ago and I really think it is worth doing something with (since when playing pen&paper, I always assume the role of the GM/storyteller). The problem here lies in what I should do with it.

It is strictly built up for an RM* game. You could say I should try XP/VX, and yes, I could try it; but remember, I enjoy spriting and my semi-custom graphics; that's my thing (even though this game is mostly about the gameplay, story and characters). Spriting in higher resolution is something I have yet to learn (not to speak about 3d graphics) and I feel that if I go about using the rtp for VX (I cannot stand the XP RTP-styled characters, holy hell), for example, the "aesthetic" side of me will eventually suffocate and the whole project will... not happen. And I simply cannot go back and use rm2k/3 (where making the graphics myself would set it apart from game not using custom graphics).

So right now, I'm standing at a difficult cross-road. With my limited programming capabilities, primitive spriting-jobs and refusal of rm2k/3, how will I go about making this game? If I chose RMVX, for example, I wouldn't be able to comfort my "aesthetic ego" with some custom stuff and sort of "set it apart" from the hordes of VX-rtp games, not to mention perhaps even alter the setting of the entire game (initially set in the standard jrpg-world, but also worked out in alternative universe with steampower, blimps and absinth).

Seriously because a game supports high resolutions doesn't mean you have to use them. Do your stuff for 320x240 and blow 'em up. The biggest issue will probably be with how RMVX handles autotiles which you'll have to figure out before you try making chipsets (if that's how you roll)
DO WHAT GRS SAID. I did this and it looked great buuuut using text is an issue. I never worked out how to used aliased text with XP so I abandoned it completely. (what d'you know I'm crazy)

barring that you could do it not even in an RM program and do the systems yourself in Game Maker or a Clickteam product or something.
Xp tiles are in 32x32, exactly the double than 2k3, no other need of resizing. Also you can use ilimited tilesets, 4 layers, 32 bits graphics, translucid colour, and make everything editing the RGSS. I see no reason for no use XP.

I hate the XP or VX RTP, and i'm doing my own graphics, now im trying to do something hi-res but if i can't simply i will create old school graphic but better and more easy.

Try learning a little of RGSS its not really hard if you know event programing, and you can make a lot of things with little edits.
Well, I investigated the matter and yes, I can simply resize the graphics (duh!) to make them fit the purpose. now I feel a bit stupid, but that's better than not getting anywhere.

I have seen some differences between VX and XP and I know that the latter is supposed to be better, but I will try it out for myself and see what I get comfy with.
If someone converted the chipset from Dragon Warrior IV to VX, I'd start using it the very next day.

Text in VX is, by default, anti-aliased beautifully and has a 2k/3-esque shadow. Much, much better than vanilla XP text.

Examples of 2k3 RTP in VX (facesets by GW member Ghost)

P.S. The autotiles in VX make mapping WONDERFUL.
actually, i checked demon tower out briefly and it looks & plays great. I will experiment with both XP and VX before finally deciding what's best for me.

Don't know about VX, but XP requires you to pay $60. Also a consideration. If you're a good programmer XP also lets you mess with the code for all the game systems, although if you're happy with the default battle systems then that's not an issue.

There's always the choice of not using RM at all. There are lots of other game-making programs like GameMaker. The main attraction with RM is it comes with a whole pre-made program structure for RPGs.
well, I wrote in my first post that I'm not good with programming and that this is the single complete gameidea that is suited for an rpg.

hint: for this purpose anti-aliasing is exactly the opposite of beautiful.

VX is the same; it has the same price tag and it gives you access to the code. Remember, though, you don't have to be good at coding to take advantage of that feature! Plenty of people write scripts you can paste into your game that enhance it in some way, and these are usually free for anyone to use.
And thanks to these scripts, you can identify a crappy game of a person new to making games by whether it has a side-view battle script thrown in! Or at least, that's the impression I've gotten.

Anyway, you should go with either Rpgmaker VX or XP since it's relatively simple to convert graphics you want to use to them, they already have all the basic things you need for creating an RPG, and if you ever do need to change how part of the game behaves you can actual script it.

Stupid Enterbrain didn't do any testing on VX though, so there's some things that would probably be easy to fix in the engine's source code that would take huge scripting workaround to fix though. Press F12 ingame for more information.

My bad. :-X
There are other programs out there that require limited coding. RPGtoolkit is one of them as well as iKa, and Sphere. While these are old programs they all offer a bit more freedom than the RM engines. But if you want to branch out you are going to need to sit down and learn another program theres no easy way around that unless you have some experience in coding. If you do however want to make a serious game with a very flexible program I recommend you look into Multimedia Fusion. Before I actually learned to code I looked into MF and a network compatibility problem I would have stuck with it. Look into Multimedia Fusion you may pay some money but all in all you are getting a nice piece of software that allows you to make multiple game styles and genres.
Yeah Multimedia Fusion is alright but slightly limited, I feel (or maybe I'm just being rubbish again). I'm using MMF to make Technopolis though soooooo

I taught Max how to change the battle algorithms and make agi work as evasion in three minutes. You can use VX, I'm pretty sure.
I dunno, I have only used MMF for platformers, I have seen RPGs created from it and they exceed the so called limitations. All I am suggesting is you look into MMF and create your own systems. It may take a little work, but in the end you will be proud of your effort. Also MMF has great support and an active community.

yeah fuck if I know anything about making RPGs in MMF.
