So uh, Shinan, which one is you?
Like I said, I'm talking about ethnicities.. Europeans and Americans are usually pretty ethnically similar (seeing as how most of them originate from the same areas in Europe). However the differences lie in WHERE specifically their ethnic origin is. Those are usually where the bigger differences lie. I don't think there is an 'American' ethnicity to compare to say, a Chinese person (or a person of Chinese descent). However, there IS say, an Eastern European ethnicity and say, an Italian one.
Like, I remember being able to IMMEDIATELY tell a foreign exhange student was from France one time because there are like, no people of French decent in Pittsburgh. It struck up a pretty interesting conversation!

Right, okay, good hahaha.
Err just to make it clear, i can see the difference between a Chinese person an an American, i'm not that clueless.
I guess i'm talking about when people think they can see a difference between someone who's a European and someone who's an American.
Edit: in fact, i'm not quite sure what i'm talking about anymore to be honest, i've forgotten my original point

post=134994...what's an Asian to you, Mog?(you might want to use a better word than "Asian" next time)
Uh, like what?
*scratches head*
EDIT: I am offended by your words and am launching a Pakiquake event on Facebook in response. Invite all your friends people.

You could tell just by looking? What were the differences that made it so clear he was French?

...what's an Asian to you, Mog?
Someone with a majority ancestry from Asia, specially East Asia. Or someone who is from Asia. Perhaps the moniker STRAIGHT UP ASIAN doesn't fit as well as 'Someone of Asian descent', but I mean...?

Now THAT, is hard to put a finger on. I dunno, really. But given that many people around Pittsburgh are of Italian or German descent, that person just looked different from everyone else walking around.
I mean I'm not trying to construe myself as some sort of eugenics promoter or some passive aggressive racist or whatever, but I'm just saying that the era of 'everyone is slightly tan with brown eyes' hasn't arrived just yet; there are still ethnic physical differences (but that's all it is, superficial) between people from different parts of the planet. Embrace our uniqueness, but don't hate. Nothing wrong with that, yeah?
Also keep in mind I'm saying this as a byproduct of my environment; many people in the East Coast, specifically Pittsburgh, sort of congregate in little enclaves (Italian people in one neighborhood, German in one, Polish in another) and socialize, date, bang, marry, and have kids with nothing but people from their ethnicity for decades upon decades, making 'where they're 'from'' pretty obvious in terms of physical features.
I realize that many, if not most people are a relative mix of different parts of the globe, making the concept of 'telling by looking' rather strange to some people, but in some areas (like here) people just sort of stick together and don't have kids with anyone outside of their little enclaves, leading to people who are able to track their family line and have it be nothing but German/Italian/Polish/Jewish, etc. It's wearing off in recent years (example; me dating a white chick), but that's how it's been in a lot of places!

Dude... Americans = "Indians" = Native Americans? If you're talking about Americans in the sense of United States citizens that ranges from Caucasian to Asian to Hispanic to whatnot.

I mean to give you an example, Asian people generally have NO problem differencing between Koreans, Chinese, and Japanese people based off of glance alone; hell, anyone could do it given experience. People just look different. Sometimes its subtle, but its there.
I assure you, this is incorrect.
I am essentially, as PUREBLOOD CHINESE as you get, I'm first generation immigrant descended from a bunch of rural Chinese farmers and natives of Shanghai.
When I was last in China, and I go pretty often, I was with my mom in a taxi, and my mom spoke English to me. The taxi driver though we were Japanese.
I've been called everything by other Asians from Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and whatnot. Once a Vietnamese kid told me I looked just like his cousin (also Vietnamese).
So now, it's not as clear as you might think.
Like I said, in my experience! I've actually had some Koreans get ANGRY at people for assuming they're Chinese or Vietnamese, or vice versa. Maybe shit is different on the West Coast! Realize I, and you and YDS live on clear opposite sides of the coast. (Also, for what it's worth, Dave Chappelle, another resident of the East Coast, noticed this social phenomenon as well)
You really, honestly cannot try and tell someone their personal experience is invalid. He just got done saying he lives in a place where it is the case, and how that doesn't automatically make it true for all places.
Thank you, Chaos.
Didn't see this
Excuse me, you're right. What I meant is North American, U.S.A citizens, but in this case I meant Caucasians, who are the overwhelming majority in this country (The Hispanic population is getting close, though!). I shouldn't have assumed other people would assume I'm talking about Caucasian descent by default.

I remember awhile ago in this same thread I made a joke about how not all Asians were from East Asia and I got jumped on by at least two people who were like "YOU KNOW WHAT WE MEANT" so fuck that shit right out the window.
Some people are more perceptive than others. I can usually tell the ethnicity of a person by looking at them. Not always, not by a long shot, but with certain groups it's not hard (FOR ME?!?). I can tell the difference between Chinese, Korean, and Japanese people. This doesn't come from STUDYING IMAGES... it comes from being aware of the differences because I find it interesting. It often isn't just, you know, the slightest inclination of the eyelid that tips me off but a combination of visual aspects including dress and hairstyle and even makeup. This is, to an extent, a cultural thing but the two are often linked inexorably.
West Indian islanders look different than Africans. A lot of people just see "oh no blacks" but if you are perceptive (or care to be) you can usually spot the differences. Of course, being a Canadian there are no black people here, right MOG? RIGHT?
Telling the difference between an Irishman and an Englishman is a lot harder than, say, an Ethiopian and a Somalian, but it's doable. Mostly it seems impossible because English, Scottish and Welsh people are so interbred with one another that they blend together. This is often the case with groups of people that are close together. Groups that tended to be at war with one another are easier to spot the differences in (like in the Balkans, or most of Africa). Groups that have been xenophobic (like the Japanese) and therefore less likely to breed with other races are also easy to spot.
I don't think any race has some magical ability to distinguish other races more easily, it just comes down to the individual. There are lots of people I could never guess the ethnicity of, but I am probably better than most at it. Some people are just dumb as hell. People will hear someone speaking Filipino and assume you're Chinese. Some people will hear Italian and think it's Russian. I mean, no one will ever mistake MOG for being ethnically Chinese, but you get my point.
edit: besides everyone knows booble is half English half Crab Nebulan anyway

It was in Asia though.
I wasn't saying it's impossible to tell, but it's not that easy. I can tell the difference pretty well, usually, but a lot of Asian people just look the same.
I wasn't implying your specific experience wasn't in Asia. I'm just saying in general. Like I said, I'm just telling you from my own subjective experiences. While I wouldn't extrapolate it to everyone and everyone, between my own experiences, Kaempfer's thoughts, and what I've seen and read, I am confident that there indeed must be differences enough for people to notice and this isn't all just in my head.
