ANIMU HAS RUINED MY FAVORITE BOOK

1) There is no fucking moon in The Count of Monte Cristo
2) There are no fucking spaceships in The Count of Monte Cristo
3) There are no fucking moonpeople in The Count of Monte Cristo
4) Dantes is not a fucking sixteen-year-old (he is nineteen as a sailor but turns into the Count over ten years later, post-incarceration)
5) I know automatically that they will RUIN Valentine
6) DANTES IS NOT A FUCKING ANGSTY ARISTOCRATIC MANGABOI; he actually appreciates what he has and the knowledge that he gains

I am assuming that ALBERT is supposed to be DANTES.

What next, are they going to make The Scarlet Pimpernel into The Secret of Nimh: The Scarlet Pimpernel: Where the creepy guillotine-watching ladies are actually mice secret agents?

MODIFY: DESCRIPTION FROM THE ACTUAL SITE:

Trying to escape his uneventful life, Albert, the son of a renowned general from Paris, makes a journey with his friend Franz. During his travels, he meets an immensely wealthy nobleman named The Count of Monte Cristo. Living in luxurious hotels, surrounded by beautiful women and strong bodyguards, the charming but enigmatic count fascinates Albert. Albert invites the count to join the high society of Paris. However, unknown to Albert, his father had once framed the count and took the Count's fiancee as his own.
Actually, this was released a couple of years ago and supposedly it's really good! I've never seen it, and admittedly the visuals are pretty wacked-out but supposedly it's one of the best adaptions of the material out there (though probably not the most faithful).

Instead of telling it from Dantes's point of view, the series apparently tells it from Albert's perspective. Albert has no idea who Dantes really is, so rather than giving you the Count's motivations at the start of the series it is gradually handed out piecemeal up until the end. Supposedly Albert is whiny and annoyingly naive, but whatever.

I was seriously thinking about renting this off of Netflix, anyway, because it's gotten a lot of good reviews over the years. Also, you know, it's The Count of Monte Cristo. In space.

Wait, I don't understand how something can be "the best adaptation" of a given source and be unfaithful to it. This has always been a pet peeve of mine.

In order to adapt something, you need to be true to the spirit of the story, and hopefully to the story itself, AS WELL AS be entertaining.

But, to be fair, Craze, this is hardly the worst thing that's ever happened to Dumas (the worst being Charlie Sheen's Aramis).

Fair point!

But: I'd argue that the garish elaborateness of the character designs in the show is an adequate way of conveying the garish elaborateness of high society at France at the time. Also, it isn't as if Dantes is a two-headed purple alien with telekinetic powers or something like that. Although admittedly he is blue.

Amazing how I knew what the book was as soon as I saw the topic title

Damn animes (p.s. somehow I don't think the anime is supposed to be related to the book in any way other than the title...like aargh there was this movie adaptation I watched the other day but its name escapes me)
This actually makes me want to read The Count of Monte Cristo. Maybe all these crazy animus "inspired" by 19th century French novels are really just fronts to get those that watch the show to be intrigued and read said classics! Or it could also be that the Japanese are just plain insane and like to rape everything in some way shape or form.

Hmm... maybe I should go to Borders this weekend. Then again I could just borrow the book from my brother... then again it is a classic that would be nice to have in my collection to balance out all the cheesy horror novels and Stephen King I bought back in middle school...

But yeah. I don't like anime anymore, and I haven't read The Count of Monte Cristo yet (and even if I did I doubt I'd pay much heed) so this doesn't affect me all too much.
The Count of Monte Cristo is a hard read. Though the movie that came out about 7 years ago was really good!
If I can get through all 1195709750197501975079501257102951720570591705 pages of Atlas Shrugged and not want to kill myself I can handle anything.

EDIT: Now, an Atlas Shrugged anime. THAT would be something. And provided how stupid and nonsensical its plot is it'd fit right in with the rest of the crowd.
ayn rand aaaaaargh fuck you
more Alexandre Dumas films: the Man in the Iron Mask film with Leo DiCaprio, Jeremy Irons and Gerard Doobydoo is excellent
In Japan, anything goes.

Oh wow, also done by Gonzo.

EDIT: According to the anime, over a million swordfights ensued.

EDIT2: ...DRAGONS!?
welp shakespeare is the anime of renaissance literature so :-\
I looked it up, and found that is only loosely based on the book. The Japanese name is something else, but the company added the "Count of Mone Cristo. This is the real name: (???, Gankutsu??, literally The King of the Cave)
Having actually watched two episodes of this last night, I have to say that it actually isn't that bad. The pacing is very slow, the dialogue is unnessecarily formal and there are some really weird things thrown in (for example, the Count introduces each episode with a monologue in French) but it is definitely not in so-bad-it's-horrible territory. Also the Count is a badass, but if you've read the book you already know that.

In other news, the Count sharing his body with a giant demon eyeball that essentially turns him into a space vampire! Also he is turning into glass! Wa-hey! (Gankutsuou is apparently the name of the giant demon eyeball)

I will have to see more of this to decide whether this is any good, though.
