Same opinion. I think it is a waste of time and I personally wouldn't do it. Though if someone wants to go through the process of making a trailer because they have something flashy to show off, go ahead. I suppose when it comes to freeware games that are generally less large, I don't really see the point of a trailer as much, considering there isn't much to lose on the potential audience's part.

What about just plain videos for showcasing features, asking for critique on a feature, or demonstrating a dialogue or action/story sequence or whatever?

I mean I can totally see how a trailer that's all like "THIS SUMMER...ONE MAN...." is corny, but a video can show a lot of things a screenshot can't.

Uh, that's why I said if you have something flashy to show and I agreed with the above post about showing off what a screenshot can't.

What programs do you guys use for these trailers?
I used camtasia studio, which is really nice at recording the screen. After spending a half an hour collecting a couple short videos you can import them into a project where you can crop each of the clips pretty easily and add audio.

It's not a waste of time, really. It's a lot of fun and the whole process takes well under a day to do.
Yeah, it is definitely fun. I use camtasia as well.
I use the old fashioned fraps. It does exactly what I need it to do.

Personally, I love making videos of my games. It's fun and I believe they better represent what a player can expect from my games than screenshots do.

Agreed, and it's less likely someone will pause in the middle of a trailer and say "OHP YEASTER DIDN'T FOLLOW THE THREE TILE RULE". As a whole it wows the player a bit more than scrutinizing (and usually being overly-critical of) a few screenshots.
