ROMANCING SAGA (AND THE SAGA SERIES!)
Posts
Like Pokemon for random encounters, Romancing Saga for the PS2 is now my posterchild of touch encounters done terribly wrong. I don't enjoy entering a small room five five+ enemies walking around ready to home in on me. You also don't get any camera control and it can be hard to tell where enemies are if they're off screen and they see you.
Also fuck proficiencies. Whoops I didn't bring Jump into this dungeon and now to see what is up there I need to leave, change a proficiency to Jump, and go back in. Plus avoid all the encounters again (and running is expensive in this game: Running consumes 5 LP which you also lose if you run out of HP, most characters have 10-15, and if you run out that character is lost). You can only bring five in a dungeon and to avoid enemies on the field you either have to be amazing at stick with great reflexes or bring two seperate proficiencies to avoid different types of monsters.
This game practically begs for a walkthrough at times.
At least this game has Patrick. He makes it better
The battles are decent too as long as you don't get buried in them (or are trying to avoid building up ER so you don't end up missing out on quests (and there aren't many that actually close on you (too bad the coolest one so far has a very narrow margin))))

While I have not completed Romancing Saga, I was immediately enchanted. I was very leary of picking it up after I wasted a present on Unlimited Saga. I guess the only complaint I eventually had was that because I'd never really played a saga game before (aside from saga frontier 2) I wasn't really prepared for the kinds of stories it was trying to give me. Albert's story guides you along at first, until eventually you realise that the game stopped holding your hand a while ago, and you are basically left with a few vague goals and free run of the world map. I stopped playing Saga 2 because I felt like the game abandoned me - i like rpg's for stories - and I was beginning to dislike Romancing saga as well - until I realised that it was basically like Legend of Mana (which I loved) You are given the opportunity to chase down whatever plot threads you like, and learn more about the world as you go along.
The only real criticisms I had were that sometimes it just kinda felt like the game was taking me somewhere, and then when it gets open ended, it's like I missed an event trigger somewhere, ya know? It feels like I'm not going where I should. Also, there's plenty of hidden variables and things about combining, and when what missions are available that you pretty much need a walkthrough for...
Otherwise, the art was great, the voice acting and MUSIC WERE AWESOME. god I could listen to that intro song all day... Tons of replay value (too much?) and while some people may be put off by the character designs and their heads, I thought it was charming.
Hoo... anyway, good stuff.
EDIT: Oh! Also! The great thing in this game is that the LP's almost NEVER drop if you still have HP, whereas in Unlimited Saga, it seemed like the game didn't give a crap how much HP you had... your lifepoints were GOING DOWN, BRAH!

Is there a way to find out what your ER is in Romancing Saga? I could never see anything in the menus. :|
Those tutorial kids are the best guide you have. The number of things they can tell you is based off of your ER. You'd have to hit up GameFAQs for the exact ER->topics though.
Feld: Have you tried The Last Remnant? It's basically a rebranded SaGa game (made by the same team, has a lot of SaGa characteristics, though the battle system is neat). Load times aside, I think you might enjoy it.
Thanks GRS. I'm actually considering playing this again. I remember stopping half-way through some temple. Had something to do with moonlight.
I've heard The Last Remnant is really, really good. Every character except the main character is supposed to be really awesome, and the battle system is crazy engaging. The PC version is better than the 360 one, though.

I don't know man . . . I bought it instantly after you said that. I was a little let down that it was not actually that much like a SaGa game. I think you just said that because you hate SaGa games and you don't really understand them.
The Last Remnant is fun for me, but I would never recommend it to anyone. It's one of those games - like the Spectral Force series - that really sucks but I always buy and love them.
Gah. They really should remake Romancing SaGa 2 and 3. That or make a new game (4) entirely. They're hard, but oddly engaging and fun to play. Highly addicting games these are, for whatever reason. =/
I want the DS version of SaGa 2 (Final Fantasy Legend 2) badly. Can't wait until it comes out. =O

Try fighting Death if you get that far. He has a bunch of attacks that take a toll on your LP. I've yet to take him down, myself.
Romancing Saga is one of my very favorite PS2 games. I don't even play video games much anymore but I can always come back to Romancing Saga. So far I have completed the game three times - Gray, Aisha and Hawke. Working with Albert and getting close to the end (My ER has to be about 18 or 19).
post=93634post=92022I think these games are a lot more fun if you stop obsessing over invisible mechanics like Event Rank . . . it's not supposed to be something you know about. Trying to get all the quests in this game sort of sabotages the goal that each playthrough is relatively short and that you randomly stumble on different events each time.

Every game is more enjoyable when you don't worry about things you'd never know unless you read a FAQ, walkthrough, etc. At least the first time through.
Though I think Romancing Saga is best when you actually have an idea of how the ER works, even if you're not conciously checking what your ER is around. I tried to grind in my first playthrough as I habitually do in RPGs and it was only by learning of ER that I learned how terrible of a decision that was.

This is a great idea in theory...until you 'stumble' on Saruin, and then he proceeds to beat you like you stole somethin'.
Feld: Have you tried fighting Death?
But that's a very good point. Saruin can range from being really difficult and cheap to being extremely easy depending on how well you know how the game mechanics work. I can barely beat him with my first playthrough party because I developed the characters that badly.

Actually I fought Death yesterday and am fighting him again right now. He fucking mollywhopped me.
I really like RS3. I sometimes just wish some of the scenarios were more fully realized. I like wandering around the world and getting myself into different situations, but many of them are just very insubstantial. For instance, I would have liked a decent-sized scenario revolving around the vampire at Pidona and Monica, like a kind of gothic short story. Then I'd maybe travel to Librof and play a part in a little political drama, gaining money and equipment as I go. If the various stories within Saga games were just a little more fleshed out, that sort of non-linear game/narrative experience would be really cool.
The Jewel Beast is a bitch too - at least, getting through the pillars in the lair. I gave up trying to take down the Beast itself once it settles in.. Weston? Argg fuck, I'm going to have to try in a few playthroughs. Don't know how people get strong enough characters at like 13 ER to take down four zombie dragons. They murder me before I even get a chance to attack. >:[
I played FF Legend 2 and 3. Didn't like #3, but #2 took a lot of my gameboy playing time. Also waiting for the DS version of it... although then I'd need a DS. Someone buy me a DS plz.
But yeah, the limited item/weapon uses plus the nice music are some things I liked about FFL2. Beat the game just recently, this time without using that stat boost glitch that I remember doing when I was young. Maybe I should try getting the Seven sword again.

I figure the best character to do the Jewel Beast quest is Barbara since she already starts out in the Frontier. By the time I pick her as my main I'll have run through the rest of the characters and therefore will get a shitton of jewels for every quest (since you get more and more jewel rewards as you beat characters).
