BEST RPG MAKER?
Posts
Ok so I am basically new to the video game making world...well of rpg maker, sphere, game maker, etc. Anyways I want to know which is the best RPG Maker out there that you can download? I know they made RPG Maker VX easier for beginners but I didn't know how easy. And I see a lot of RPG Making people using 2003 on here. Which is the best?
The Easiest to use?
The more versatile to use?
I want to make a game (obviously) and I need to know which RPG Maker to pick.
Also I do have a side question...you know Tactic games such as FFTactics or Jean D' Arc, or Disgaea? Is there a program like RPG Maker and such that is meant for creating Tactic based games. That would be nice to to have one that does that. Thanks for anyone who helps!

The best rpg maker being the best is more of a matter of opinion. There are people that said rpg maker 95 is the best of them all while other people say that rm2k is the best version, but that rm 2k3 while it does have side view battle system it is the most bugged of the two. And there is rpg maker xp and vx where you can script whatever you want in the system, from tactics game like fire emblem to platformers like mario (in theory, I never seen a platformer made on xp/vx yet.) The main problem with xp is that is not noob friendly as vx is but vx has a lot of limitation that can only be corrected by the use of scripts and that is not as noob friendly as you think. I use vx because I find it simpler to use than xp and rpg maker 2k3 sometimes annoys me with is the the pictures, you can only have a certain bit depth with rpg maker 2k/3 and that is pretty annoying, but vx.xp does not and that is why I use it.
Ho boy here we go again. Basically VX and XP have a script features which will allow stuff like Tactics games. You don't actually have to know how to code in order to make use of the script feature (copy paste and follow instructions). rm2k3 is a decent program, but it's not the most 'versatile'.
One of these days I'm going to make an article to stop these RPG Maker program questions.

Go with either RMXP or RMVXâ€"really the only big difference for a newcomer would be the appearance of their RTP. They're both good introductions and have plenty of advanced options. Once you're comfortable with one, it might be worth it to check out the other.
In all honesty, RM2K and RM2K3 are outdated. Yeah, I do have a special place for them in my heart, and so do most people around here, which is why they use them. But nowadays, RMXP and VX are the standard that you hould start with, especially when you consider their more advanced functionalities like their much more powerful handling of graphics, not to mention their RGSS features.
And if you're feeling ballsy, you might want to check out Enterbrain's newest and most versatile (but more complicated) programâ€"Action Game Maker.

For all the people that you see using RM2k/3 (like me) it is mostly because that was what was out when they started this hobby, and that's what they got comfortable with.
I'd recommend RMVX over RM2k3 for anyone just starting out.

I could say use what you want but, no. Use RPG XP or VX, like others have said. They're not as buggy and you can script, plus you use higher resolution graphics and a full spectrum of colors, instead of 256.
I do use 2003 at the moment, but I figure once I get one or two projects done I'm gonna move on to XP. I don't think I'd like VX, cause of the idiotic chipset system.

The chipset limit system really isn't that bad. Quick! Here's a pop quiz!: Do you use every single tile in a chipset when using rm2k3? Do you love having to copy paste prexisting 2nd layer objects in chipset files to keep consistancy? Is it really that hard to use charsets for objects when you somehow run out. Have you ever played an rm* game that would run out due to lack of chipset space? Are you inefficient? Are you making an epicly epic game?
If you answered 'no' for all of these, then VX is for you!

I can't think of a bug in rm2k3 that can't be fixed somehow without too much trouble, then again I haven't gotten all of the bugs that people complain about.
Darken do you know exactly how much chipset space you get using RMVX (I could check but I'd have to download it or god forbid, use google)? When I first saw it it didn't seem like enough for an entire 20+ hour game (at least on the lower layer) but my memory might just be fuzzy.
rm2k3 holds a special place in my heart because I don't understand scripting and it seems scary to me. Oh and I like how pixelated the graphics are <333

YOU DO NOT NEED TO SCRIPT TO USE RMVX
Also, Demon Tower uses the 2k3 RTP in RMVX. You just double the size of the graphics and suddenly, hey, it works out just fine!
There is room in VX for twenty-four (24) "inner" walls/ceiling combos and sixteen (16) buildings with traditional roofs (or you can use it for more walls).
With the VX RTP, that is enough for sixteen unique-looking towns and twenty-four unique-looking dungeon/building types, and there are tons of quirky tile b-d (e is EMPTY for YOUR OWN USE) things that fit each dungeon/building type.
It is the entire RM2k/3 RTP, times two or more, all available on any map. Also, the mapping is much easier than in 2k/3 and EONS AND EPOCHS beyond RMXP's stupid tilesets.
By the way, those interior building/dungeon wall/ceiling combos also come with the following floor tiles: a basic floor tile, a ruined or alternate floor tile, a matching stair tile, and a "edge" tile that I have found many, many uses for.
Hell, you can mix-match the different cabinets to create, say, potions on the bottom and books on the top.

Not completely but if you want to make a fairly advanced game it's necessary isn't it..? Like if you want a side view battle system or a number of other things I'm pretty sure you need scripting - again I have about 1% of an idea of what I'm talking about so feel free to contradict me - but what are the things you need scripting to be able to do? For those of us not trying to make epic DBZ fan games, is it a necessity or not?
If you are going to make epic DBZ fan games, you need a life.
Also, you need scripting in order to be able to use fire skills.

I'm about to complete a 30 hour game with VX.
Didn't need any more tile space than I had.
Only took about 9 months because of auto-tiles.

But how else will I explore the backstory behind SSJ5 Piccolo???
This thread has made me contemplate using RMVX. If only someone could tell me how to import original tilesets and actually use them, because when I tried (for only about 2 minutes I'll admit) I couldn't figure out how to do that.

This is the worst advice ever. If you do not know how to edit the script you are using/do not understand how it works/do not understand what it might affect in terms of the other scripts used etc. then you should not be using scripts to develop games. Besides, "custom" scripts are there to be unique: using the same script as everyone else defeats the novelty scripts are supposed to introduce. If you're going to use the same CBS as everyone else you might as well pick the DBS with the relevant capabilities.
Anyway.
Use RMVX. If you aren't comfortable with the style of the RTP then get used to resizing resources from RM2K/3. This is especially true if you want to make a futuristic game - I still think EtG should use resized chips from RM2K/3 instead of those ridiculously chibi charactersets!

I'm sorry, what?
If these plug-and-play battle systems are shared around, then it's just basically another Default System in VX you can use, even if it didn't come packaged.
Isn't RPG Maker a tool to help people who can't/won't build their own RPG engines make RPG games? (Because they don't have time or don't know how to program and understand the code necessary to build an engine.)
It would be unwise to try to plug 10 scripts together, but picking a new default battle system and an advanced message system are both things I think everyone should at least investigate, they're basically just "plugins" for more options or to change existing features.

I don't mean to be overly rude, but this is the most retarded thing I have ever heard. Please tell me how 90% of rm2k/3 games having the exact same DBS is better than some VX games using the DBS, some using the popular sideview one, some using a real time battle script, some using the heavily edited DBS, and some using a slightly edited DBS. etc.
You can edit scripts without ANY scripting knowledge as there are instructions attached to a lot of them on what values to change.
