i just went searching for sprites and every site ive come accross just ends up giving me this:

i know this might sound irritating, but its annoying not to know..
the obvious answer might be to just cut it up on paint, but it takes time and i know theres probably some FREAKING obvious answer that some dude with too much time on his hands has to tell me, acting like im a complete dumbass...

You are searching sprite databases. These websites are not rpgmaker/game maker/whatever web pages and exist solely for the purpose of dumping graphics. It is up to you to arrange them in a format that is compatible with the program you use.

You want some kind of image editor that can create grid lines on your image, guessing where to put each frame in ms paint will only give you headaches
i was going to make a arcade scroller on game maker

so far i found one limited site that has already cut them up for you, but they only host final fantasy characters
What's stopping you from learning the dimensions gamemaker supports (or learning how to define those dimensions, as the case may be) and cutting them up yourself?

That takes effort, and god forbid he put any effort into his game.
sprite sheets ?? what is this sorcery ??
Get iDraw. You can choose what dimensions you want. If you're going for RM2K/3 dimensions - 24x32 (WxH)
Look at a regular sprite sheet if you want to know how to 'set them up' properly. Have fun.

Game Maker lets you define the dimensions for spritesheets...

If you want separate sprites for everything, cut it up, and do some animation.

If you aren't even willing to throw the effort in to cut up the sprite sheet, quit now, because your game will be awful.
