They're (mostly) not linked; they're a bunch of random stories loosely associated with one another through recurring characters and themes. This is more retarded than trying to put the Breath of Fire games in chronological order.

I remembered as a kid I used to say that zelda's storyline was retarded as they just did the same thing over and over (which was basically the case up until majora's mask; not including link's awakening although it was born from the exact same mold as the previous games)

No the first 3 are actually officially confirmed to be in the same universe, with one taking place after the other. That's why the creators went out of their way to officially state that 5 is in their own universe (4 is as well). One of the Japanese plotbooks that Capcom wrote has a timeline and everything.
I mean it's not even hard to tell from just playing the games. Breath of Fire 2 and 3 specifically mention the game that comes before it, and Breath of Fire 2's plot is built directly on the first one.
