IG MAKER HAS BEEN RELEASED! (ENGLISH ACTION GAME MAKER)
Posts
I'm at work right now so I can't provide screenshots. The interface did confuse me for a while. I haven't messed with it much, but I did find out after a while how to change the resolution. They provide options, which is nice.
My initial reaction was that the samples are pretty cool, but I'm never going to use it. I'm probably going to be called an idiot for this, but RM2k3 handles everything I need fine for this, and if I really wanted an action platformer, I'd just do it in RM2k3 (wait wat dhm?) After that I'll just glide over all the gamemaking engines and resume using C++.
There is an audience here, it's just not for me personally.

There is no way in the world you can get to that level of action games in RM2k3, dhm.
And as for just using C++, that is somewhat foolish as well. It saves an amazing amount of time to have an engine to work with as opposed to piecing the entire thing together.

What WIP said. There is a middle-level between programs like IGM and doing straight out C++ coding: programs such as Game Maker or Multimedia Fusion 2. They give you a game making interface, while allowing you to program anything, as well as allowing programmed plug-ins/add-ons.
post=85497I developed my own pixel-based action/platformer for a minigame in SU a couple back, and I've expanded it quite a bit since then, just never really implement any of the new features for lack of a need. (I had things like dodge rolling and shielding so it played a bit like Smash Bros.) I guess what I meant to say is I can make something fairly enjoyable with the engine.

As far as C++ goes, I should probably mention I've been using OGRE, a graphics rendering engine. However, the game logic itself is still all coded in C++.
It's pretty neat. http://www.flickr.com/photos/35150516@N03/sets/72157613447657691/
Didn't mean to sound like an elitist or anything. Hopefully that justifies my earlier post a bit better. :)
Not to sound even more elitist, but doing that sort of thing in RM2k3 is kind of a waste of time, don't you think? In the time you put into making it, you could have had more done in an engine better suited for such a task.
I like RM2k3 and sure you can do a lot of stuff in it, but you can do far more and far faster in newer engines.
And yeah, I've seen OGRE before and played with it. It's not really something I'm interested in.

post=85532No I totally understand. However, I do like challenging myself, and that's really the only reason I do it. The way I look at it, I could learn how to make another game in another engine, or just try to fudge something creatively and challenge myself with the engine I'm currently using and make it a minigame underneath the variety that I dub the Starless Umbrella. :D

We all have different interests I suppose, and it's all about doing what we like to do right? You don't sound elitist and I've heard people say that to me plenty times before. I don't love you any less. :)
Steering on-topic, I could see myself forking over the money for this just to mess with it and create a fun little default side-project (or let my brothers make something). Does anyone find the price unreasonable?

I think that with all the polish that Rpg Vx has 90 dollers is way more than this is worth. I may still break down some day and buy IG Maker but that is not today.
To those of you who don't like this and don't wanna use GM and MMF2, another option is Construct http://www.scirra.com
I've tried it and it's great so far. Moreover, it's free. You can also script in the game using Python, though the site said that drag-and-drop stuffs are enough for you to make a quality game.
As for IG, I think the interface are too difficult to understand or maybe they just don't have good tutorials available yet. But forcing you to use .wav for audio sucks, and I don't find porting to XBox360 and Flash that interesting anymore if you cannot finish a quality game with it in the first place.

I love Action Game Maker, now that an official English version is out, I might finally be tempted to pay for it.

The program is so damn frustrating to use.
I'm surprised it was released, though.
It's that and it lacks any form of coding, sure it has variables but it's nothing like RM2k/3 or even XP/VX. Be warned as this is not for everyone, if you have the will to learn a language this program is not for you, only good thing about it is that it can export to flash and XNA.
Why use an engine when you can MAKE YOUR OWN!?!?
You guys should really check out Lite C. It's much easier than C (or the ++ variety) and it comes with extensive documentation. That, and it's REALLY easy to learn.

You guys should really check out Java. It's multi-platform, has a cool icon, and can keep you up late at night.

Game Maker's good enough for me with 2D.

Why use a high-level programming language when you can MAKE YOUR OWN!?!?
