DRAGON QUEST IX

I know there's some Dragon Quest fans out there. The gaming event of the decade is happening in Japan this Saturday. I'm broke, so I'll be on the sidelines chilling, but it's still pretty intense stuff. It's amazing how apeshit advertising is getting for the game. Posters are in all video stores, convenience stores, and many other places. I'm guessing it'll be the best selling Dragon Quest yet by far.

The game itself looks really fun and like something that's easy to pick up and put down. I personally am not too interested in the multi-player, despite knowing that it's probably been finished for 2 years, and just been fine tuned since then so it has perfect balance.

Who's excited or has an opinion on the game? I'll probably be picking it up on the 21st (pay day) if it's not sold out.
Well, I can't read Japanese, so I'll probably wait until it comes out in English, but I will be getting it then. And staying far away from spoilers in the mean time. ^.^
It's coming out on the DS so YES I'm getting it! DQ IV was great playing on the DS and a fresh new DQ game is just what I need. I can wait though as I have to finish DQVIII first.
DQVIII is the only DQ game I have no real interest in.

I wish DQVII was released with smoother graphics on the PSP. It would definitely get bought.
I don't know much about DQ. Is is like FF where the stories for each game are independent of each other?
I don't like DQIV DS as much as the NES one - it's still good, mind, but not as good.

On the plus side, I have 999999 gold in Chapter 3.
Dragon Quest VIII is amazing. I really love it, easily one of the top PS2 RPG's. I don't have a DS, so I won't be getting it.

I am frothing at the mouth for DQ9. I yearn for it. It haunts my dreams.

Take pictures, Canuck.
1up for some reason is having amazing coverage of the DQIX release. Good on them I guess. It's not even mentioned on IGN.

I got 9 more days until payday.

I have been having a hard time resisting videos of the game.
I'm outrageously excited for DQ9 also! I can't wait to play it. It will be awhile though. I wish it had a secret English translation like DQ4 had.

Also . . . I really hate italics in video game sequels etc. Even though it's pretty rare that an official sequel doesn't have italics.

PS: The edit post function is very slick. Grats WIP!

From what I know of the DQ series, they are basically in trilogy arcs, where the world is similar (or the same) between three games. I know this is a definite for DQ1-3 and DQ4-6 (especially 4-6, which is why those were the ones remade instead of starting from the first one), but I dunno about between 7 and 8.

I only have DQ1 and DQ8, but I'm looking forward to see what DQ9 has to offer to the series (which is ironic, considering that the formula for the actual GAMEPLAY portion hasn't changed since 1988 when the first game came out).
I don't think IV to VI are too too similar. They both have similar place names, but I think that's about it. Perhaps it's the sort of "1000 years in the past/future" sort of thing.

I to III are the directly linked ones. II is a direct sequel, and III is a direct prequel (very similar to Lufia II).
Ha ha ha! I can't wait for this. It looks great. Also, I'm in need of a nice old-fashioned RPG to play for the DS. I already have DQIV DS, though not V...but I might pick that up sometime in the future. Can't be too sure, though, as they're very similar from what I can see (although V IS my favourite...I rather the look of the SNES version).

Also, here's a playthrough of Dragon Quest IX that was uploaded on to Youtube. It's the beginning part, so I'll leave it to you regarding wether or not you want to follow. From what i can tell of it all though, the battles look great! They're pretty much the same as before, but that little bit of action in between with the characters running around makes it look much...better (IMO).

Woah woah woah. Dragon Quest 9 has touch encounters?

I thought the world ending in 2012 had a better chance at happening than this.
It was going to be an action/rpg until fan outrage stopped it from happening.
I'm pretty glad that it didn't go in that direction, actually. Sure, I wouldn't have minded if it did, but I'd rather the old formula Dragon Quest seems to follow quite nicely.

And yus. I'm surprised they even PUT touch encounters in there...! Gah. I'm happy, though! Enough of that random battle stuff! That's one thing I could do without.

I am very impressed how they did the battles in this. It is very Grandia like.
An interesting thing about DQIX is that it already has life and magic bars in place, like in DQVIII's overseas releases. It's almost as if Square-Enix is planning for a smaller Japanese market and a larger overseas one. The touch encounters and angelic setting almost seem to say we're playing Grandia IV instead of Dragon Quest IX. It's a good thing the slimes are still around!

As for release, I think S-E is going to shock everyone with a late year (yes, as in THIS year) release. Possibly as early as October. Keep in mind that there already was a several month delay for DQIX to release in Japan.
Umm... it's probably going to be the best selling DS game of all time in Japan and the best selling Dragon Quest, so that's not really a small Japanese market. I can't see if selling 5 million copies in America.

2.34 million copies in 2 days. I really can't wait until payday.
