Actually, they have a boss who pays them. Tips are left for good service. If a waitress served me my coffee while looking at me as if I'm the cause of all her life problems, I'm just not gonna tip her.
Yeah, most of the time i feel like they haven't done anything impressive enough to be tipped. If they did a dance while serving me id probably give them some extra money, but otherwise...
And just because i don't have money to burn doesnt mean i should have to go to McDonalds.

Yeah, they have a job and tips left by customers is what pays them. If you can't afford to leave a tip, then...don't eat there.
entire issue summed up.

incorrect in the vast majority of cases. you guys 'n' gals are kind of missing the point, it isn't extra money. if there isn't a service charge (very often), tips are divvied up between service staff.
If people are getting an hourly wage, then tips are extra. If they need tips, it assumes their hourly wage is insufficient. If that's the case, it should be rectified, and tipping should die the death it deserves. Other countries do it, things don't go to hell, and people get paid enough. The differences are customers are paying the price it says on the menu, and not the price on the menu plus tax plus tip, and the restaurant staff knows exactly how much money they will make.

Assuming we are talking about waiters and waitresses, servers, etc, actually, no, their wages come almost entirely from tips. Tips aren't 'extra cash', it's their income almost entirely. That's how its designed. A tip based wage job isn't something you have to dance around and do backflips to earn a tip, if you're eating at a place where the servers are getting paid almost entirely in tips, they deserve a tip just for doing their jobs. If you don't tip them, you're not paying them for the service they provided.

Yeah I hate the tipping system too. They need to do something to replace waiters(sorry waiters) or make the bosses pay more.
True that. But I live in a university neighborhood, so the cafes' staff here are getting paid properly by their bosses. I have these in mind. The only places here that accent on tips are the cafes in the centre of the city, the pubs and the underground metal bars. The first is a well-paid job anyway, the second's normal wage + percentage of tips, and the last one relies on tips entirely.
To summarize, I'm used to this system, so people making me leave a tip when I liked nothing about the service pisses me off. I do leave tips occasionally/whenever I want to.

It's more complex than you think. The way the current system works, if servers got normal wage, the cost of the food would skyrocket. It's not as simple as 'their bosses paying them more'.
Then why does it work well in other countries?
Because they have a different system. I'm not saying our system is impossible to change or anything like that. But while the current system is in place, it's only respectful to follow it so people can get paid.
If waiters were payed semi-decent wages instead of getting tips, the overall cost of food+tip would be pretty much the same, I imagine...

Except for those who don't tip.

Like I said before, the current system in place would make it so food would shoot up in price if the pay wasn't tip based. I'm not lying, look it up.
I did and all I got was a bunch of jibberish from Yahoo! Answers.
That one fat guy you always find at Gamestop. It's always a different one every time I go there, but they're all the same. Wonder if that's one of the employee's jobs...
Dell customer servicepeople that would rather sell you a computer than give you any sort of helpful information.

I agree with this and it's my pet peeve. I'm obligated to follow a dumb system. If not, I'm rude.
Well, yeah, when it comes to people getting paid. :( Having had a serving job in the past, it infuriated me when people didn't pay me for my work because of some dumb philosophy. Don't hate the player, hate the game.

Yeah I probably would too but I would never take a serving job since people tell me all the time how crappy it is.

Ugly cosplay is a pet peeve of mine. People should only dress like that on Halloween.
