POPULARITY AND THE STATE OF THIS COMMUNITY
Posts
As hilarious as Darken's posts have been in this topic, I'll have to side with F-G in that this wasn't set up to be an advertisement topic, but a community discussion about a common problem.
Sure, we're all quick to jump on F-G because he's public about his dissatisfaction with the turn-our his recently-completed game has received. But F-G's not the only one, and we all are still acknowledging an issue with game exposure, so I didn't want to direct any comments at F-G specifically.
However, that's not to say there are exposure issues that come down more specific things, such as game titles and the creators that make them. I know why others ARE directing comments at F-G: being known as a bad sport in the community and throwing occasional insults IS counterproductive when trying to advertise a game. Your involvement with amateur game making as a whole and quickness to help others with technical advice do help your advertising disposition. The things I mentioned above detract from it.
Don't get me wrong. With the number of replies, it does come off as F-G bashing. But, as you know and as I like I say to any other member of the community receiving harsh and even sometimes insulting criticism, take what you can use and ignore the rest.

Yeah honestly guys, this community is really insular. If you're looking to increase the number of players for your games, look outside the community and advertise in other places.
I have nothing much to say except that everyone should play each others games more (no shit, right?). It's a bit hard to break out of the 'make' and jump into the 'play' box, but hey, try. I've been working at it recently. I think I'm going to start up Exit Fate when I get home from work.
Also, if your game is good and you advertise intelligently (intelligent advertising doesn't have to mean a lot or even aggressive advertising, and it certainly doesn't mean obnoxious advertising), you WILL see some hits. No one is going to play your game simply because you want them to.
I might even write an interesting article soon. Keep your eyes open.

I'm trying to play more games that come up on the homepage, ever since RMN3 at least. I'm gonna agree with Feld here and say thats the thing people need to at least try and do more often, play the games, instead of looking and leaving.
Although like Neok said, this community is dedicated towards development more than gaming itself, so theres definitely not gonna be a lot of feedback unless a game becomes exceptionally popular.

post=87366People keep saying this, but where? I don't harbor the illusion that games made with RPG maker are super-popular and desirable. I doubt they'd get much traction outside of the immediate community.

But I am really curious as to where else one can even advertise these kinds of games.
Do you visit any other forums/communities? For obvious reasons, your best bet is still places where people are familiar with who you are (the whole rep. thing). For example, some of us are on DeviantArt. I know Skie's dropped her game off there before and probably picked up at least a handful of players there.
It looks kinda bad if you sign up to a forum just to drop your game and leave, but you can do that too. Think about your target audience, and look for forums/sites that cater towards that. As to specific places, I don't have any in mind, but I'm also not at the point in my game's development where I want to do this kind of thing. You can try asking Craze once he gets back I suppose. Or do some searching on your own.

Know what's funny? Ephiam just PM'd me saying he posted an advert for HR at a Naruto forum he frequents. Plus, I remember when ankylo linked us to Hockey Forums where they were discussing Exit Fate.
Truly, though, I only really frequent RM sites since my other interests I can usually talk about with RL friends.
On a serious note: It is obvious people need to review games more, even comment more much as if you were posting in a game topic. This has all been said before. However, to further that notion, I would like to bring attention to the "Top Reviewers" that you see on the right hand side in the reviews section. Half of the people on there haven't been active in the last year, it is a joke. It would be nice to see every game with at least one review, not to mention competition on who can write the most reviews.
I think part of the problem is that lurkers to come on RMN solely to download games and nothing else (not even registering) are too afraid to express their thoughts (or too lazy to) I would like to see some kind of good encouragement for outsiders to register and write reviews/comments.
Of course, some people are excused from this critic collective, as they are spending their useful energy in other parts of RMN. I admit I am of a rare breed, who will willingly search for an RM game to play. I love seeing what people can do with a limited program. Just lately I have been searching for a lot of old rare RM games I used to play for hours on end. But I'm not the only one who does this. As I know of some people who have rpg maker game infested folders going way past the GB mark.
Which reminds me, where the fuck are Neophyte's reviews? Seriously someone drag him in here. I recall him writing a lot in GW way back. The administration is doing a nice job at employing people like Brick to write qualitative reviews, but we need more than that. If you know anyone personally who is a genuine critic and loves to write, bring him/her here.

Solitayre has come out of nowhere and now has 9 quality reviews under his belt. Which is awesome (and is totally going to be my next Shout Out should I ever write SNEWS #6).
One idea I had that I tossed around in the mod forum was a Review Train. Basically, after it got going, person would review the last game in the train X, and then say "The next game to review is game Y". The first person to (quality) review game Y gets to suggest game Z...and so on. Not sure if it'd take off...
Also, I was considering starting Play Something! IV, but have met resistance (and some good points as to why it's not the best of ideas).
"If you like X, you might like Y..." had a pretty good start, but then died off of late.
...after that, I'm kind of out of ideas.
EDIT:
Oh yeah, the SNEWS itself tries to encourage game playing by featuring Wave-makers and Hidden Gems. But no one reads the SNEWS.

I personally think one of the problems is people are afraid to express true opinions. Look at any game's comment page and there's 70% chance you'll see the first comment saying "This game is awesome!" regardless of its actual quality. When every game is touted as "awesome" it becomes much, much harder to sift through the community to find actual quality, and people are much less willing to actually try to play anything.
This is a developer community. People (hopefully) aren't here to hear mindless praise. They are here to have their work critiqued so that they may improve it. Am I wrong?
Edit: I totally read SNEWS

Considering that I came into this topic to say something about it (and also considering that it's my brainchild), please, elaborate!

I wish people were more critical and more accepting of it. It's gotten to the point where in any thread I make about my game, I have to essentially encourage people to say what's on their mind... To little effect.
Also, a lot of us need to stop passing the buck ("YEAH PEOPLE TOTALLY NEED TO START PLAYING MORE GAMES I DEFINITELY SEE THE PROBLEM HERE" *sits around*), and actually start playing games themselves.
However, I definitely see things getting better in the future, especially with RMN3.

Some people truly do want criticism. But, there are also those who do want mindless praise (or some form of recognition for hard work put into a game). Aside from download counts, if people are playing a game, the creator doesn't know about it. We here in the community can offer constructive criticism (although some don't respect others enough to value their opinion). What would be nice is building a better bridge over the gap between players who come here to leech games, and the people who create these games. Something easy enough to convince the players to leave a little feedback without requiring big submission forms or login procedures.
In regards to how we can force people to play more games:
Play Something is a bad idea because it's something we should be doing in the first place. I recall the last one not changing the review/feedback spike at all. Release Something makes sense because it causes people to rush and push out content for the sake of good exposure. Hell the last event made me very close to finishing a game (I couldn't even get past the demo stage before that). Overall, Play Something is just some cheap RS knockoff.
SNEWS? It has good potential, it needs taglines, or something more to hook people to read it. With good revision it can be a large asset to the community I'm sure. I can't really suggest anything more than that, I'm not a newspaper person.
Review Train? I don't seem to understand the point of it. Could you elaborate more Kentona?

Before I even look at the OP: Mog made this topic.
EDIT: Wh-What the hell?
EDIT WITH CONTENT: If I recall correctly, wasn't Exit Fate advertised outside of the community? And didn't become insanely popular for an RM game? Just a thought.

Part of the reason nobody wants to leave feedback is that a very large percentage of RM folks respond to criticism with "STFU".
My own reviews here have drawn a little of that even from people who didn't make the game I'm reviewing. I have thicker skin than most, but if a new user comes along and offers some polite criticism and gets turds flung at him by the game's author and others I don't blame him if he never wants to review another game again.

I am totally onboard with ideas on how PS isn't a good idea, or what wasn't a good idea about it, but from what I remember (unless I'm remembering wrong), the number reviews skyrocketed after the last PS.

This. If people want their games played, they need to learn how to accept criticism and opinions. And people need to realize you can't satisfy everyone, no matter what.
Granted, people DO give very un-grounded and biased opinions at times, but you gotta learn to just smile and let them speak their mind, not try and argue with them about your game.
