Lost in Translation sounds kinda like a boring relationship drama. I prefer to rate my movies based on the popular CCPS (Car-Chases-Per-Scene) metric, with the Melee- and Gun-fights options enabled.

Could I BE any more Chandler Bing from Friends (TM)?

I think you are looking for the phrase BAYSPLOSIONS
I haven't seen Lost in Translation, but I hear it treats Japanese culture very superficially.
Hm... well, I've never been to Japan, so I can't argue against that from personal experience, but two things: A) Lost in Translation sees Japan through the eyes of American tourists, who'll probably get only a superficial glimpse of its culture staying there for only a week or so. B) A friend of my brother's, who is the world's biggest japanophile, has lived there for over half a year, knows more than he should about the culture, and LiT is one of his favorite movies.

But I dunno. You might be right. It was made pretty much entirely by Americans. Let me know if you ever watch it yourself and we'll see.

:D

Also, Darken, I'ma gunna watch Oldboy later tonight.

Anyway, on today's Orig's Movie Recommendation Topic...

Movie: The Descent

"A woman goes on vacation with her family and friends and her husband and her daughter encounters a tragic accident. One year later she goes hiking with her friends and they get trapped in the cave. With a lack of supply, they struggle to survive and they meet strange blood thirsty creatures."

Although I'm not a misogynist, these're some of the dumbest women I've ever seen. But I'll let you find that out for yourself. Anyway, The Descent is a psychological horror film that combines claustrophobia and achluophobia. It kind of reminds me of a modern day H.P. Lovecraft story. The creatures might be metaphors for the women's anxieties, or they really might be blood thirsty monsters that used to be human living underground. I was really suprised by the quality of this one, it's very tense and keeps you on your toes.

If you liked this, also try: Saw; REC; The Thing
Grrr don't die on me topic! Hmm... I've got dramas, foreign films, comedies, horrors, animated features. What am I missing?

Movie: Blade Runner

It's motherfucking Blade Runner, motherfuckers! Harrison Ford goes around a dystopian Los Angeles searching for some renegade androids, bangs one and kills others. Loosely based on the novella Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick.

Some think this puppy is way too slow, but I find it a perfect science fiction movie. Rick Deckard is up there in Harrison Ford's repitore alongside Han Solo and Indiana Jones. Incredibly stylish visuals and an intriguing film noir storyline. Plus, it's based on Philip K. Dick, and everything that guy makes is gold! I don't even like sci-fi and I love this movie. One of those movies that just outdoes itself with its cinematography.

If you liked this, also try: The Matrix; Total Recall; Basically any Philip K. Dick adaptation

Any other genres I'm skipping?
oldboy! yes! park chan-wook's other movies are pretty good too.
Hmm speaking of Park Chan-wook...

This is the strangest film I watched besides Old Boy. It starts out with a woman being released from prison who was charged for murdering a little boy. The plot develops interestingly along the movie and you discover that things are more than they seem. There's A LOT of strange scenes and imagery that really suck you in. I won't spoil much more than that.

Happiness of the Katakuris

Billed as a 'splatter musical,' this hilarious Japanese romp from director Takashi Miike is a departure from his usual work of gore-fests and action-slashers. I can only describe it as either "Rogers and Hammerstein, as it was always meant to be shown" or "One of the best things I have ever seen. In my whole life."
Honestly, I can't find the words necessary to describe this musical romp's pure majesty and presence. The sheer wonder and amazement of it can really only...
You know, maybe it's better if you just watch the trailer:

This one's a must-see. Hands down, one of my all time favourite movies. And let's not forget the moral of the story, in this case, stolen directly from Monty Python...
Always look on the bright side of life.

And the funniest thing about Dick is that most of his books are basically "unfilmable". Yet there's at least twenty films based on his works.
Most of Dick's story premises are really amazing on their own, it doesn't really surprise me that people like Spielberg get a hard on over dick stories.

I think I just called spielberg gay.
heh. couldn't imagine simulacra as being a film

also, they made a scanner darkly into a film

I see what you did thar.
A Scanner Darkly was an awfully pretentious little movie. Probably should have read the story first. :\

Tardis: Aw, dude, I loved Audition. One of my favorite horror movies. That movie looks absolutely hilarious. Fantastic recommendation imo.

Darken: I think I went into Oldboy expecting something way too different from what it actually was... In that, I thought it was going to be more of a kung-fu flick instead of a psychologically disturbed revenge-action movie. Well, it was still good. Not my favorite, but still good. If Sympathy for Lady Vengeance is the same kind of thing, it might take me awhile to get to it. XD

Movie: Suspiria

"A young American dancer travels to Europe to join a famous ballet school. As she arrives, the camera turns to another young woman, who appears to be fleeing from the school. She returns to her apartment where she is gruesomely murdered by a hideous creature. Meanwhile, the young American is trying to settle in at the ballet school, but hears strange noises and is troubled by bizarre occurrences. She eventually discovers that the school is merely a front for a much more sinister organization."

Arguably one of the (if not the) greatest slasher films ever made, Suspiria is the vivid nightmarish magnum opus of director Dario Argento. Bright colored blood, an incredible lurid soundtrack, beautiful main actress, and some creative deaths make this one stand out. Argento himself is a rather scary fellow, I doubt there's a man in this world that takes more pleasure in seeing women painfully murdered. Except maybe an actual serial killer, which he's just a step under.

"I like women," he once said, "especially beautiful ones. If they have a good face and figure, I would much prefer to watch them being murdered than an ugly girl or man. I certainly don`t have to justify myself to anyone about this. I don`t care what anyone thinks or reads into it. I have often had journalists walk out of interviews when I say what I feel about this subject."

To get a feel for what I'm taking about, take a look at these snapshots. I'll just post the links. Warning, blood.

Awesome tagline they have there.

I have to start checking some of these movies out. Been looking for something to watch.

I'm always happy to recommend things. Suspiria is so awesome. And the "fuck yeah!" moment at the end is rivaled only by the end of Audition.

Speaking of which, tardis reminded me...

Movie: Audition

"Seven years after the death of his wife, company executive Aoyama is invited to sit in on auditions for an actress. Leafing through the resumés in advance, his eye is caught by Yamazaki Asami, a striking young woman with ballet training. On the day of the audition, she's the last person they see. Aoyama is hooked. He notes her number from her file, calls her and takes her to dinner. He hesitates to call again, worried that he'll seem too eager. When he does, Asami knowingly lets the phone ring for some time before answering. She's alone in her darkened room - alone, that is, apart from the writhing victim she has tied up in a sack on the floor..."

It's impressive if a horror movie actually makes you physically sick and repulsed. I hear during the initial screening, a woman in the audience fainted and had to be sent to the hospital. The majority of this movie is rather like a romance, two emotionally damaged people find mutual love. However, things take a turn for the OH GOD NO about thirty minutes or so before the ending. I won't spoil it for you, but it has something to do with a tongueless man eating vomit and needles. A movie only a real man can get through.

If you liked this, also try: Tokyo Gore Police; Repulsion; Oldboy; Ichi the Killer; Imprint

Movie: Stop Making Sense

"David Byrne and the rest of Talking Heads rock the crap out."

Not enough concert videos in this thread. Considered one of the most defining concert films ever made, Stop Making Sense is more entertaining to watch than a lot of regular movies. Bright lights, crazy moves, an incredible vision from the mind of David Byrne. I'll let his self-interview speak for itself...

"If I gave you fifty dollars right now, what would you do with it?"
"I would get something to eat."

If you liked this, also try: True Stories; Blues Brothers

If we're going to talk Japanese gore fests (one of my favourite genres, especially after a long day.) then this one definitely deserves a mention. Same vein as Tokyo Gore Police.

The Machine Girl

The film opens on typical Japanese schoolgirl (sailor suit included) Ami. Ami is in the process of exacting revenge on a gang of bullies who tortured her little brother. To death. Nice guys. In this vengeful process, she loses a limb, and upon suffering this great loss, does what any sensible person with a grudge would do. She replaces her lost left arm with an oversized military-grade machine gun, ala Grindhouse. Carnage that would make Uma Thurman proud ensues. It doesn't just stop there, Ami loses more body parts, which she replaces with further heavy artillery.
At times, the gore is so ridiculous, it becomes humorous. Add a comically bad dub on top, and film becomes even more enjoyable, in my opinion. The dub plays out like a bad anime fandub, with some weak attempt at matching lip motion. This makes some of the most intensely gory scenes even more entertaining. In a world of "so bad it's good," in the dub department, Machine Girl is decidedly excellent. To top off the dub's beautiful ice cream sunday, the voice talent is some of the classiest in the anime industry- several of them straight out of YuGiOh. The film plays out a bit like a live action hyper-violent anime, dialogue and all. The effects are occasionally ridiculous, often cheesy, and bloody enough to make Sesame Street's The Count go vegetarian for life. It's like Kill Bill, but angstier, with fewer references to pop culture and fewer jumpsuits.
Oh, and they cut a dudes' fingers off and feed them to him on sushi. Awesome? Awesome.
This movie will give you nightmares. Hilarious nightmares.

Trailer:
If you don't like splattering gore and fire-hose quantities of blood, do not watch.
This is among the most violent films I've ever seen- proceed with caution, kiddies.

If you like this, you might try: Tokyo Gore Police, the Kill Bill series, Grindhouse

And now we transition from modern hypergore to OLDSCHOOL SCIFI, my personal favourite genre.

Robinson Crusoe On Mars

Commander Kit Draper and Colonel Dan McReady are orbiting Mars in an exploritory surveyor. A malfunction forces them to eject with only Draper and a monkey named Mona surviving. Draper must learn to survive in this hostile environment fighting thirst, hunger and even hostile aliens if he expects to see home again.
Feel like you missed a bit of the plot? Well, you're in luck, because way way back in 1964, they pretty much give you the whole plot of the movie in the trailer-

This trailer right here:

Take a deep breath. Exhale. Inhale again. Now laugh heartily at the bottom left of this poster. Scientifically Authentic. Wow. Now let's take a moment to remember that 60s/70s cheese factor aside, this is one of my favourite movies. For good reason too, it's an awesome story, and I feel, captures the sense of isolation nicely. Think Omega Man on mars, but without that albino black guy with the gun. If you're going to watch it, be sure you make it through the somewhat tedious intro. It picks up a little way in, and it's a fun, not too serious ride once there. Of notable mention is the cameo by Batman. That's right, Adam West himself. Remember- this isn't just a cheesy old scifi B-movie. It's a great story, based of course on the classic of the almost-same-name, and it features some really excellent photography- their DoP really knew what he was doing setting up the wide shots.

Also, this song makes the movie all the more awesome.

If you like this, you might try: 2001: A Space Odyssey, Robinson Crusoe, Lost in Space, Forbidden Planet

I should wrap up, as this post is entirely too long already, but while we're on the topic of retro sci-fi flicks...

Ach! Mein lieben! Ich habe einen geschmackvollen fisch innerhalb meiner hosen!
