AVEYOND II IS COMING OUT TOMORROW

Hooray! Or boo, depending on who you ask.
I wasn't too fond of the first Aveyond, actually--the game was good, but not amazing, or even great. Still, the creator of the game says that II will "blow Aveyond out of the water", so here's hoping that the second will cross the line into awesome territory, this time.
The game did have a lot of content. And it did win a Game of the Year Misao, in 2005 or so. So Aveyond II has a lot going for it. Here's hoping it'll be worth playing!

Aveyond is no longer eligible for Misaos, as it is a commercial project.
As for the quality of the game, I could make something in my sleep that is better than Aveyond. That game was poorly made.

The game has such great graphics, but they're used so poorly it just looks fucked up, If those were my tiles I would at least use them right, or good for that matter. And they keep mixing the RTP with the custom tiles, it just looks weird.
I've heard that Aveyond actually rakes in a decent profit. So that's pretty cool, that a game like that can suceed nowadays. Some of the screenshots look pretty nice, as far as graphics go.
They were sandboxing scripts in February, and went through beta in less than a month.
I'm biased against the game since Amanda kinda fucked me out of working for it, but for all its worth despite that, I don't think it'll be much better than Aveyond I.

I'm totally against Aveyond, myself. The first game was pretty average by the rpgmaker community standards, and it only made sales off of people who didn't know any better.
I'm actually against commercializing our little hobby scene entirely. If you want to make money from your rpgmaker games, include them in a portfolio and submit some resumes to actual game companies. Don't charge folks for something that everyone else is giving away for free.

But what if it costs money to produce the project and it is a cut above and beyond the material that people are giving out for free? You can definitely make an RPGMaker game that is worth somebody's money -- even someone who "knows better".
If you are willing to sink money into a game, you deserve to make some money back. Aveyond was an average game, by RPG Maker standards, but considering the majority of RPG Maker Games are incomplete, it was a game worth paying for.

Maybe if I seen a "commercial" project that was worth paying for, I would change my mind. It hasn't happened yet, and it doesn't look likely to happen any time soon. We're just not at that level as a community yet.

I'm willing to sink money into lots of my hobbies, and I don't expect to rake in the profits based off of it. Also, being a complete game does not justify me paying for it.
The program was made not only for hobbiest, so despite the common usage over the years, it by no means odd to see a commercial project turn up and be successful (within reason) once a legitimate and legal copy of the software becomes available.
My issue with Aveyond is that the game is far below the top RM games. And especially most SNES RPGs. I would gladly pay $20 for a complete version of KC. Aveyond is not a good game at all. And it and its successors are not appealing to me one bit.
But I mostly agree with Holbert. It could set a precedence that people think the only reason to make games with RM is to sell them. And that would be a pretty shitty scenario for us to be in.

Aveyond II is already out, and I haven't played the first one, because I refuse to sink $15 into a game that looks like any other RMXP game, and probably plays like them, too. It doesn't even use custom graphics!

I think it was about $150 all together, which would be ten downloads at the rate listed above- barely worth it (Honestly, I doubt ten people would pay $15 for a Dragon Kingdoms game).
I'd hate to think making Aveyond I was *THAT* expensive, I thought I read somewhere that it cost $1,000 or so, and its already had thousands of downloads, so... that's just corporate greediness.

I don't know what we are questioning. I don't think Aveyond is worth the purchase based on what I played. Aveyond II, hopefully there is a demo.

Well, you have to give it some credit--there was a lot of custom music (bar some RTP songs that were really, really glaring), a custom battle system that integrated pretty well (although it didn't try anything new), several party members (although some were apparently near-worthless) and a rather nice menu system with a journal for quests and stuff (no faults here, really).
What I'm trying to say is that Aveyond isn't just a five-hour game thrown together in a month or two; the author put some genuine work into it, and even retooled it and released a new version after its completion. But then again, Last Scenario had a much better plot, a custom battle system that actually tried to do something different, a card game, and was overall more fun (and just as long) as Aveyond, and that game was for free.
Has anyone here played the whole game, or has no-one even bothered? Or found the time?

Oh sure. I'm not saying it doesn't deserve credit for what it is. I just don't think it's worth being paid for. Bravo to her for finishing it and its sequel.
I've played the first eight minutes or so of the sequel--the best thing so far is probably the title screen music, which is basically a remastered version of the theme of Ahriman's Prophecy. The battle music is a huge improvement, too. And the overall presentation of the game has improved by leaps and bounds, as has (from what I've seen so far) the story.
But it hasn't entered "worth paying for" territory yet...we'll see, I guess.
