FINAL FANTASY IV (DS)

Posts

It all started to go downhill when they decided to star a pansy pretty boy as the male lead in every game.

Seriously, there should be a rule that your hero's arm has to be thicker than the hilt of his oversized sword

The new artist is really dragging down the series. I enjoyed Amano style, and the classic fantasy genre they drew on. They more or less dropped the Job Class idea, and went with anorexic dbz anime. FF12 was a saving grace of late, so we'll see where Gunblade chick of FF13 takes the series.
It's not over yet.

I don't quite get why people hold up Amano as a bastion of good character design, to be honest. I mean his work is certainly pretty, but as raw character design it's really flat. The characters are more or less interchangeable and have nothing that really stands out about most of them. The art directors for the games have to basically ignore a lot of the stuff Amano chooses to go for, which is why the sprites for the games almost never look like the characters in Amano's sketches.

He's a great artist, but I think Nomura's a much better character designer, if only in the sense that when he designs characters, his central goal appears to be to make characters that are recognizeable to a player even when they're shrunk down to sprite or in-game (that is to say, not cutscenes) model size.

Also, "anorexic dbz anime" is a really bad description for the path Final Fantasy went that strikes me as more or less designed to piss off anime AND Final Fantasy fans just for the sake of pissing them off. It's an oxymoron, too, since one of the signature visual elements of DBZ is how much attention is given to beefy muscle-men. It does add further evidence to my believe that the dislike of Nomura has as much to do with the divide on the internet between those who enjoy anime and those who don't as it does with any honest criticism of his work.

Nah, Tetsuya just pukes out stylistic anorexic dbz anime freaks with punk outfits, and people gobble it up because of the linework. He's got a nice smooth outline to his stuff. But, left to himself, we get crap like Kingdom Hearts with enough zippers and toggles and buttons to make a tailor cry.
And don't be a nerd about it. DBZ is terrible with constipated anime expressions. I use the word DBZ because since the release of FF7 Advent Children, it seems ok to make their characters defy logic. Kingdom Hearts, FF7 Crisis Core, etc. It's just annoying now. They've made all these sword-baring kids who can leap ten feet in the air for no logical reason. And they're anorexic. Look at freakin' Kingdom Hearts (again) and the World Ends With You. Tell me those kids don't eat like bulimic birds with a straight face.

As far as that divide between fans over the anime issue. Well, I enjoy enjoyable anime. Majority is tripe, but there's odd gems like Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scrolls, Princess Mononoke, and Akira that stand out for artistic class. The rest are just bad cartoons, that has cultural humour that doesn't translate to english well. It's been said before, but bad anime is no better off than North American bad cartoons. So, leave that crap out of this. This isn't about anime, it's about the unrealistic character design that comes out of Tetsuya's pen.

EDIT: Well, no, actually it's about FF4 on DS, so we might as well continue this in PM if you want.

I know what you mean. Square enix are well known for the "blond hair, blue eyes" typical male hero. You have Cloud, Tidus, Vaan plus many more. It won't be like that though in FFXIII, the hero of the story is a female.

Whomever drew this should be hired immediately.
A fucking men to that, WIP. That is seriously one of the best concept art I've ever seen.
Well, the Nomura characters are almost lighter than air, so of course they can jump so high. Besides, in Advent Children, it was more like 100 feet than ten. I guess his sword takes the brunt of each fall, because Cloud should've cracked into two by now.

And whoever did the Final Fantasy IV DS concept art should be the new character designer for all the future Final Fantasies.

Square-Enix needs to branch out to cover the growing overseas market, and getting good designers is a great start.
I don't know why, but I didn't like the looks of this. It's just way too cartoonish to go with "lol dramatic voiceacting".

Jesus WIP, that is breathtaking. I especially love that sword and the Floateyes in the background. God that's great!
that is freaking awesome. Love the design.

I dunno about that one man, I thought Zidane was awesome.

On a side note, I am very pleased how true they remained to the original character design. Man, the PS remake did not do this game justice!

Thoughts? KluYa sounds pretty dramatic. Cecil is a bit young sounding for me, but I can handle that.

WIP: Are there any other works from that artist re: FF4? Amazing concept art... :o
"You're a good man Cecil"
'I'm a coward"

I'm sorry but that part of the video was just really corny to me.

Anyways, I'm really looking forward to this.

Hmmm, I hope you can turn it off tbh. We'll see xD

Was the art for the orignal or the remake?

That art is by a new guy. The original artist was Yoshitaka Amano. I don't recall who this new guy is.

It isn't too bad--sounds a lot like Final Fantasy XII's voice acting, actually. Kain sounds way too deep in comparison to Cecil and Rosa sounds a little bit off, but it's
definitely professional, at least.
Once Cecil goes Paladin, his voice matches up better, imo. Except it's fucking "SEA-CIL" not "CEH-CIL." I'm going to SHOOT whoever thought it was supposed to be pronounced "ceh-cil." DDDDDDD:

But, seems pretty epic otherwise.

I think it sounds pretty good ... but Kain's voice is way off. He sounds like a fifty-year old man.
