TYPICAL LENGTH OF A GAME?

I'm making a RPG that hope will be pretty cool, it's my first so my hopes aren't really high, but I do want to make something good.

As for the story, I'm hoping for it to be fairly epic, but I want to know, just how much of gaming would you guys go through without being annoyed?
No need for it to be too long. Just a couple hours or so. Remember, don't try and make a full length 60 hr game, you're just one person, you'd be making it too hard on yourself and probably end up not finishing it. 2-4 hours is perfect for an amateur game.
Very important: Length does not translate into quality. It's easy to make some stupidly long game by having tons of grinding and pacing that's about as exciting with watching grass grow.

For an amateur game, just a few hours (gonna throw 3-6 out) for a finished product is good. That's just a rule of thumb though, if you can get feedback on what somebody thought of your game would be better so you can see if your game is dragging or moving too quickly.
It depends. It really doesn't matter how long a game is, as long as the time we spent on it was just plain awesome. Like what D-Bones said, don't try and make a 100 hour RPG if your a one man show. Shoot for something shorter, and you'll have a better chance at completing it. Also...a lot of people don't have a lot of patience to play a very long game. So whatever you do, I support it.
You should look over your plot and storyline and try to determine beforehand; how does this translate into the game and what importance does it make. Everything that is not relevant to this progress is filler material. (secrets, side quests and extra character/s, fine, but the main goal is the plot; if you have a good idea to spare, throw it in, but make sure you don't overdo it. I suggest making a list and figure out how many sidequests that would fit in where and when it's appropriate according to the storyline)

If you or if you don't plan everything out beforehand; make sure you have the ending and the beginning set (and maybe some spots here and there in the middle of the plot). Then you simply fill out the holes.

A more simpler way of saying it: how many good ideas for gameplay do you have? By this I mean, wierd dungeons & boss fights, minigames & puzzles, (really good) side quests. This is what you put in an rpg between the storytelling, it is what you portion the information given to the player and it is what makes the whole thing a game (in that sense).
Thanks for all of the great feedback guys! And while I have a topic open, does anyone know if its possible to get viruses from some of these games?

I had an experience like that before.
Well, the site says that all the downloads are checked (but they're really not, just new game pages; I know this because I once had a download accepted that was called "here's the goods kentona"). So it is possible, though unlikely.

That said, none of the games I have downloaded from here have had any form of malware,

Win32.Weird?

Anyways, don't rely on the site to protect your computer. Make sure your virus scanner is up to date. *

* General rule of thumb of using the Internet and downloading stuff
I've never encountered any viruses on this site.
Game length? Well I'd say a good game should feature all of the following.
100+ Hours
Multiple endings
Custom systems, graphics, and innovation
Cooking
Smithing
A Mini-map

But that's pretty much a given.
Natook, what the hell. If you're not going to be serious about this then you can get the hell out of this thread.

This is Rm2k3 people! The big leagues ok? We need at least 300 hours + sidequests. Jesus christ Natook...jesus christ.
Lol, you certainly have your standards up very high man.

I don't even think it's possible to have all that. Even if you did, that would take one person like 3 years to even finish something like that. Ouch.

can't make a bad game if you don't finish any games

Ask Kentona; he'll tell you all about it.
Don't mind them. They just like messing with people. ^.^

Really, the amount of time an RPG should take depends on the story, pacing and gameplay aspects (walk/battle speed, how many battles, how large the maps, how hard puzzles, how many sidequests, etc).

Basically, it'll be as long as it wants to be. If you want to make an epic 500+ hour game then do so, but it'd take a very long time to create by yourself. Most RPGs that have been completed around here range from 1-15 hours, give or take. The creators likely didn't plan for them to be that long/short.

It's hard to tell how long one person will take to finish a game. They may like to grind or do all the sidequests or just whizz through and ignore any extras. Really, time shouldn't matter when you're making/playing a game. As long as it's engaging and fun.
