HOW OFTEN DO YOU RUN FROM BATTLES?

Posts

Really? I always thought ff8 punishes you for grinding
I hated FF8 too, the system was all complicated and broken and battles lasted longer than they needed to be. I would run into some random encounters that fought like boss battles. The story wasn't that great, but the style looked cool (the way things looked ect.). My biggest problem is that I would randomly run away because I didn't feel like wasting lots of time fighting something that took so many hits too kill for no reason.

The battles were further slowed down by the fact that you kept having to draw spells to keep yourself buffed.
It depends on how often battles pop up.

Almost never.

For 2 reasons.

1) Battles give you good things like xp, money, and lewtz.

2) Chances are that if I hate the battles in a game enough to run from them, I'm not going to be playing the game anyway.

For the most part, I never run from battles, even when situations begin to look dire. The only time I run would be when the encounters get annoying, like in a few RM games I've played, then I would run because I don't feel like fighting. Another reason I would run is when my party is in bad shape, and I don't have the items/spells to fix that, so I would run from battles to get to a town and heal.
I run from battles as often as I can. Like in one of the early Final Fantasies where I got to a mountain, saved, and found that I could only beat the bossif I was really lucky... otherwise I'd have to start all over again!
I run a lot when the encounter rate is too high. I know it often means I'm underlevelled later on but there's nothing more annoying than getting out of a fight, walking five steps further and getting attacked again before you even get to the other time of the room. I want to get on with things, damn it! Even if your battles are super-awesome, I don't want to fight them every ten steps. Actually, come to think of it, I usually just delete games full of random encounters. To hell with 'em.

I also do it - less often - when I find myself in an area too tough for me. This happens sometimes, for example, in the non-linear segments towards the end of FF6 and Chrono Trigger where you can often accidentally walk into a dungeon earlier than you're "supposed" to. I don't like when that happens, non-linear games sound cool but in a stats-based RPG you've got to have some kind of levelling up system for the enemies, otherwise it just gets annoying when every dungeon is either laughably easy of horribly hard.

Chances are if you're someplace with enemies that outclass you to the point where you need to end battles early, to me a more rational solution would be to reset the game and build more levels in a safer area.

Well, I doubt many people would carry on further into the dungeon if they're running from every battle. I'd say running is just an in-game method of pressing reset; you get out of there and go grind XP somewhere else, just like you said. I don't think the player should ever be in a situation where he has to quit, reload, and "do it properly". It's really immersion-breaking and feels like the designer just wants to make you suffer. And what if you haven't saved for a while? There should be an escape route in the game. Run commands, smoke bombs, escape spells and suchlike are just a nice, neat way of doing it.
I used to run from a lot of battles but since then have realized my stupidity and laziness and now I fight almost every battle, as painful as it sometimes can be.

Good......because anyone that runs away from battle lacks experience......literally.
It really depends, but in general I only run when the fight takes too many resources to be worth it. More specifically, some red shadows in Persona 4.

Haha...I envy that pun. Really whenever I used to run from battles I wasn't that into RPGs and so I didn't respect their nature. But that was a long time ago.

Running is for wimps.

That's damn right- and we're Real Men here.
Seriously though, the benifits of battle SO outclass the possibility of losing. If you fight every battle, you'll (probably) never need to run. Problem solved.
I use the run command a lot for these reasons:
-To get to the boss of a dungeon without expending too many heals
-When walking from town A to town B. I'll fight as many battles as I can without the need for an Inn, or as many battles as I have MP to use the most powerful spells, but avoid any extra.
-When I don't particularly like the monster party. Some monster parties are just experience beacons that don't present an unusual challenge, whereas others offer mediocre experience and do things like poison you (sometimes the cost/reward ratio is pretty poor if you have to use andidotes a lot, especially if you're grinding to buy gear).

Also, while some games punish running, FF6 is an example where running is somewhat rewarded. Espers have that level-up bonus, so if you play a low level campaign until you get the best level-up bonus Espers, then you'll have the most powerful end game characters (although unfortunately the final battles of the game aren't difficult enough to justify it).
There could be three reasons why I am running away from battles.

1.)The encounter rate isway too high
2.)The battles are boring.
3.)I wanna go save, before my favorite T.V show starts.

This. Among other things like:

Random Encounters - These are ANNOYING. Especially if there is no way to tell when they are coming, the encounter rate triggers a battle every 6 steps, and there is no way to avoid it (there are ways to make random encounters less frustrating... Velsarbor comes to mind). If you are trying to complete a puzzle in a dungeon or something like that, I normally end up running a lot. My mind is too wrapped up in completing the problem on the map.

Inferior Enemies - This hopefully doesn't pop up too often. But some games allow your characters to become so overpowered that you won't even want to battle anymore (FF6).

All in all, I don't run from battles too often unless one of these two things happen.

Personally, I never escape from battles (though, I do like seeing the characters run), as I live by the standard of: "If I can annihilate an enemy party with only melee attacks, then I am strong enough for this current segment of the game".
The only time I ever DO escape from battles is when the battle is impossible (an example would include the Guardian from Final Fantasy VI. That is the only time I've ever really escaped a battle).
I like being overleveled, so I almost never run.
I tend to run when I encounter really weak enemies from earlier in the game. For example, when I'm level 80 or something and I have to fight slimes every ten steps. It's just not worth pressing enter 15 times or waisting the spellgirl's MP by selecting auto.
