DOES ANYONE ELSE THINK FACEBOOK FEEDS, POLLS, AND QUIZZES ARE THE DOWNFALL OF CIVILIZATION?

I'm exaggerating about the downfall of civilization.
But seriously, they suck. Every 5 seconds: "I just pooped!" Then 17 people who "like this" and 7 comments congratulating them.
Then there are the quizzes. "Can you name this celebrity's buttcrack?" "What flavor of ice cream are you?" What day of the week are you?" Here's my question. "How pathetic is your life that you have time to answer these quizzes all day?"
Then there are the polls. A mini-political arena. "Do you think (cultural icon x) is an asshole?" <-- Let me translate this poll for you. "Do you think everyone who disagrees with your world view is automatically an asshole?" answer is apparently yes for everyone.
Yeah so... yeah.
I think you might have stolen my brain for a second there.
Myspace and facebook will one day bring the entire earth together under it's communist rule.
No, facebook has destroyed civilization. It is causing the gradual degradation in social trust that we otherwise would have through more intimate social interactions. All the steps of mediation that occur in human communications are dissolving the impetus for empathy in personal relationships. Corporate interests are shaping our behaviors into some kind of well-meaning-hedonism covered in a bombardment of consumption of triviality. We need to reclaim power over our own social interactions and not rely on corporate mediation, we need to reestablish a focus on provinciality and geographic community as important to one's social identity. The glorification of the exhibition of the self must be stifled and replaced with a communitarian orientation and mores of social guilt to encourage the resumption of humility as a valued virtue.
Otherwise you will all be stupid and lonely for the rest of your lives and be sitting wondering why all your relationships are unfulfilling.

There's nothing wrong with pointless quizzes/polls because they're just a bit of fun, must like pointless videogames. Status updates are a good way of informing your friends of important things quickly; when people do use them for mindless things it is quite easy to skip over them. Anything else is the computerised version of a bit of banter down the pub with your friends.
In short, no. No more than anything else mindless has "destroyed civilisation", anyway.
Yeah, that pretty much my opinion, I don't mind Facebook and Twitter, I have both... The only thing that bugs me are the people that are addicted to them.

Is this why you whine about your girl problems on IRC? =P
Edit: As a side note, I avoid using social networking websites in general.
Of my 190 or so friends on facebook, I read regular status updates from about 10. That leads me to think "wow, these people are always using facebook! is this what it's come to?" What I don't think about is those 180 people who aren't doing that and are rarely ever using facebook at all. Of those 190 friends, about 4 use annoying quizzes and applications. Since those status updates are big and they do a few a day, it's really noticable and easy for me to think "wow, is this what people are doing with their time these days?" when it's only what 4 out of 190 people are doing. The "bad apples" just stick out.
Facebook isn't a downfall. People are still having face to face communication in droves. Facebook is a great way to share pictures with friends. I mainly use Facebook to share news articles with friends.
There's no need to reclaim what we already have. The internet addicts are a small minority.

I prefer AssNovel myself.
I agree with a lot of what people have said here. I find social networking to be another reason for people to spend too much time online instead of out doing more fulfilling things. I really don't see the point to it. I'm speaking from ignorance since I've never actually used one before, but I already know how easy it is to get addicted to checking email and whatnot. I don't need anything else tying me to my computer screen, especially when it seems so trivial.

I have a Facebook account, but I don't really use it; not for lack of interest, but laziness. My profile pic is like a year old, and I never upload any pics or anything. I am lazy and I'll probably do something about that. Whoops. But Facebook can be fun.
I can't see how Facebook and social interaction are mutually exclusive. I see plenty of people using Facebook to upload pictures and stories of themselves having a lot more fun than any of us, and the lot of us are sitting here on a forum (nothing wrong with that), and implying that we're better than the masses or something.
Just can't see it.

I love Facebook because I have a lot of friends that don't live down the road from me. Okay they do, but that road is a few hundred miles.

Also, some people don't get humour.
Up until yesterday I didn't know what Facebook and Twitter were.
