NAMING CONVENTIONS - CHARACTERS, SPELLS, AND MORE

Posts

here's a good name site. http://www.seventhsanctum.com/

I despise those games filled with Japanese names especially, characters with American first names and Asian last names.

I agree with this sentence up until just before the "especially". This is common enough in real life (James Guo, Richard Lee, Johnny Mo, Jackie Chan) that I don't understand why it in particular is a problem.
I checked out Seven Sanctum's Fantasy names Extreme generator and.....
Katana Amber......

Yes!! I love it.

Edit:
This is my name now
"Ever-changing Czar who Was Destined to become the Blue Traveller"
Seventh Sanctum's organization generator for governments gave me "State of Provinces". Something really doesn't seem right about that one.

Another good site is http://www.chaoticshiny.com. Plus their "alchemy" generator is just awesome. "Postage stamps + Bicycle + Microwave on high = Kayak"

I make very limited use of random generators for any purpose.

This does not count simple dice-based random generators of my own design.

For Take Down games, I basically just steal skill names from Final Fantasy and stuff like that.
For Dude games, I have a lot of fun making skill names either puns or where you found them or just some random comment-oriented name.
eg: Under My Bed, In the Cherries, PEW PEW PEW!, I Failed Chemisty, and my personal favourite, The Sky is Blue.

yeah pretty much Hong Kong! (they're British first names, of course)
How many Jeffery Matuzakas and Billy Hitzuguyas do you know?

12 Jeffrey/Geoffrey/Jeff Matuzakas and only one Billy Hitzuguya.
When it comes to characters, I just choose something that I think sounds right for that particular character. For some characters this can take quite a while.

I name spells mainly after what they do or their animation. In one project I names the fire spells "Heat Wave", "Fireball" and "Inferno" while the ice spells where named "Ice Blast", "Blizzard" and "Frozen Orb".

None, but I have at least one Johnny Ono for you. (Excellent name for a Yakuza, in my opinion.)

When it comes to spells, I keep it simple. Here are some examples:

Fire/Earth/Aero/Water I, II, III
AOE: Firestorm, Tsunami, Earthquake, Cyclone
AOE element hybrids: Eruption (Fire/Earth), Storm (Aero/Water), Rockslide (Earth/Water), Sandstorm (Earth/Air), etc.

Rally: Strength/Magic buff spell.

Poison, Blind, Sleep: Status magic.

Congratulations on using the four actual western elements (not goddamn ice or lightning). Although having Fire, Earth, Aero and Water seems strange. Why not Earth, Air, Fire, Water? More consistent that way. Or something like Ignus, Aero, Geo, Aqua. Don't mix and match though.

I was referring more to Greek classicism than to cRPGs.

Blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile?

EDIT: wait that's the humors.

Not sure...I guess I was staying true to my inner Final Fantasy fanboy.
Still working on this topic - I haven't got all that many names yet, and some of them I do have may confuse players for a while.

Example: Earth Stance, Water Stance, Air Stance, Fire Stance, Lightning Stance, Ice Stance.
Elemental magic? Nope, purely physical unarmed combat skills - Earth buffs defense but debuffs speed, Water buffs speed but debuffs attack, etc. I am going with those six elements as the 'natural' set (there are also technical and magical sets with their own elements), but as used here the names are a convenient shorthand from the creators of the martial arts style in question.

I do have a few related classification sets, but not many at the moment, and nothing that I can claim is 'reused', if that's required - I'm currently working with three storyline ideas, but they're all set in the same world and time, and kind of tie into each other.
