NAMING CONVENTIONS - CHARACTERS, SPELLS, AND MORE

Example: Earth Stance, Water Stance, Air Stance, Fire Stance, Lightning Stance, Ice Stance.
Ice stance makes me think of a fighting snowman for some reason. Maybe that's because I'm not quite clear on what you mean by "stances"...
The four elements are nice, so are light&darkness, but fire, ice and lightning are the most common (and useful) elements and I really want to have those.
"Disturb not the harmony of Fire, Ice, and Lightning, lest these Titans wreak destruction upon the world in which they clash."

When I was in highschool and a grade A professional Japanophile, I used to make all my character's names into Japanese names. Now that I've outgrown that phase of my life, I've started using more ordinary sounding names. Why? I dunno so people don't call me a Weeaboo, I suppose.
I like the name Lance. I always have. I always wanna have a guy named Lance. I mean, think about it. He's named after a type of spear, and spears are cool. Yeah, I made him the mage in my newest project because it also sounds like a pompous guy's name at the same time. o___O;; I'm getting ahead of myself here.
I also like to use names that are from other languages sometimes, like Dimitri! Dimitri sounds like a smart guy's name.
I suppose I should get some weirder names, though. The Prince of an alien planet shouldn't be named Seth. *dies* It's just when I try to come up with interesting sounding names that are weird and out of the ordinary, they kinda... suck.
I REFUSE to use name generators. If I didn't come up with it, then it doesn't feel like I've named them properly.

A major villain in one of my games is named Seth. =P
When it comes to names, I normally don't think very hard about it. I just write the first thing that comes to mind.

Lance is one of the most phallic names possible. Lance to me is invariably the name of a douchebag high school quarterback. Whenever there is an enemy Knight named Lance in FFT (it is always a Knight) and he is doing douchebaggy things like hitting my female Priest while she is charging a spell and killing her, I think...that is something a fucking Lance would do.
Fucking Lance.
I really like the name Pha(e)n(e) (the e can go in either place, or both, but not neither; i.e. Phaen or Phane or Phaene are all acceptable; the last one is prefererred). I have managed to only use it in one RM game...although I often named my Mage Duel guy that. I have used it...often...in other media.
Never name a character "Guy". FFII can never be taken seriously for this reason.
Edit: Or "Hope" for that matter.

Guy
Guy of Gisborne. You are now wrong.
(i.e. it' was a legit anglo-saxon name for centuries)
Agree with Chaos.
Also the main character of my longest standing written work is named Hope, so...
::shakes fist::

Hehe. I was just inserting a lame Hope joke. No offense meant.
And yeah, there are quite a few people named Guy. I just think it's awkward in a game.
Nothing beats "That Man" from Excel Saga, though.

Funny, Asa said the same thing. That Lance sounds like a douche name. I made my Lance a gentle, quiet guy. Maybe he can change your minds? *wishful thinking* He said that Lance sounds like the name of some kid with a cocktail in his hands with rich parents is watching a group of kids in a canoe and saying "I HAVE A YACHT! " and treating them like pee-ons. *sad* Well that's paraphrased, sort of. He made the comment a long time ago when I told him that a character's name was Lance.
The other names that I tend to use, other than Ran, obviously, are Dimitri, Matt, Anton, Stella, and Anita... especially Dimitri and Anton.
post=134443post=134340It's awesome, of course!
Kentona, what's your opinion on Curling?
It's actually my favorite winter sport, even more than hockey. They just opened a curling club here in Rhode Island -- I'm totally signing up once I have some disposable income :)

It's spelled "peons". It means a medieval serf, not someone you pee on. : P
Anyway yes Lance gives me THIS impression as well, in ADDITION to the sense of being a dumb jock bully. Hence, perfect for a knight...particularly the kind to one-hit-kill a helpless female white mage while she was charging a spell.
I like the names Dimitri and Ran. There is a Ran in one of my novels and at least one Dimitri in one of my games, I believe (he is ACTUALLY Russian).
