I agree, the sub'd versions portray the characters more accurately, but in this case, Nausicaa had an AWESOME dub job.
I just recently acquired all of studio Ghibli's films. Laputa is one of my favorites for sure, as well as Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke.
By the way, has anyone seen Ponyo yet? I'm going to see it tonight, pretty stoked.

The only reason subtitles are better in anime is because they're in text, not because of the original actors. The Japanese voices are awful, sounding both annoying and poorly acted.

I find it difficult to judge a voice actors performance in another language for some reason... Though I can think of at least one case where the english voice acting is strongly inferior. (Naruto)

Dubbing can be great and usually is when Disney does it for Ghibli films. Its only downside is that the film becomes less of the culture it was from and more of the culture it was dubbed into. Subtitles have less lost in translation, because you can still hear the original voices as they were meant to be heard.
So both are great, especially if done well.

I'm not saying all dubs are bad, but in my experience a hell of a lot of them are. I didn't mind so much the English version of FMA and most of Ghibli films that I've encountered in English are a pleasure to behold/behear, but I find most of the children's (G-rated) anime are terribly done, voice and (in some cases) edit-wise. Perhaps the companies don't think kids would notice or care as much but let me tell you, when they have something to compare it to they do.

You're talking about Drunken Master, right? That movie cracked me up with its language. For almost half an hour at a time, the worst thing you'll hear is 'dumbhead', and then all of a sudden everybody's dropping 'c***sucking b*****d' every other sentence.
Favorite anime movie is hard to pin down. For the time being I'm gonna go with Sword of the Stranger. Excellent, excellent work, if startlingly bloody-minded at points.

I don't watch anime anymore but I remember arguing about subs vs dubs with people before - the subject always comes up, afterall - and I think is the best, perfect reasoning to watch subtitled anime. I never watched dubs and it has nothing to do with the quality; there are good dubs and there are bad dubs. I preferred to experience the show closest to how it was intended to be watched by the people who made it.
I do find it funny that everytime there is a good dub people rush out to say it is better. Is it really better or do people just think that because it's good and in a language they understand? I've seen people say you can't judge acting in a language you don't understand when others claim japanese voices are better, so why doesn't it work both ways? ;p

Agreed. It was tough between Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, but I think I have to go for the latter.
