WHAT MAKES STEREOTYPICAL JRPGS TERRIBLE?

But that brings up a new question: What the fuck is the rest of the party doing when the main party get knocked unconcious? Being useless that's what

Because the only interesting thing of modern JRPG is the Story, but this is a crap. Really. I like more an 8 bit RPG than the generic JRPG plot... at least i don't have to waste hours and hours in something horrible.

In the past i liked the Final Fantasy saga because it had an inteligent story, with a great occidental influence and not generic anime/jrpg. Others games, just for being the first of their time, can be forgiven: Chrono Trigger(original), Tales of Phantasia, etc... also i think in 32 bits the formula was Ok. And the gamplay was very important in these days.

But now JRPG totally sucks, because it have been maked 1000 times and is worse than 16-32 rpg's. There are a very few RPG i have trully liked the history... i think that the best genre for good historyis is adventure. I don't understand how people can play modern jrpg... i only "liked" Grandia 2(decent), FFX(mediocre) and others excepcionts that i have to give an oportunity, like SMT or SaGa.

Another important thing is the Nomura influence, now i can't stand any of these art.

RPGs don't need an excellent story; they need a plot with enough substance within the context of the game/genre and action featuring interactivity to make the player want to continue.

Compare how you feel about THE PRINCESS IS IN ANOTHER CASTLE to DAMMMNNN IIIIIT ALLLLLLLLLL!

Let's assume one member in a 4man party gets knocked out in battle, 3 members are left. That monster isn't going to be able to finish the fallen member as long the 3 members are still alive. If all 4 members are knocked out, then the monsters can have their way and fuck them up.

I mean I guess removing stupid plot holes like 'bringing people back from the dead' items being sold in shops with a simple change term 'death' to 'KO' is just KUUHRRAAZZYY.

I agree.

I think its a matter of history density. I don't think it goes only by genres, but by gameplay styles. Is true that Super Mario Bros can't have a top history, but in their way, it can be improved and tested to their limits.

I think a good example of this is Alundra versus The Legend of Zelda. I think Alundra is in the limit of genre/style densitiy and also is better than medium zelda in overall story.

The same can be applied to RPG's. Every formula have a density limit, you can't make a pokemon with a large argument, for example. But in this limit, the history can be good or bad.

Actually the problem is not that i'm looking for storys (i normally play only for gameplay), but that they cross the density limit (the gameplay is poor and a simple filler between scenes) and the quality of the story is bad. If they only give me story, and this is mediocre...xD. I have played some games only for their story, like Dreamfall or FFX. But they are the only exceptions.

Dreamfall for example is a good example of what modern JRPG can become if they only want to tell a story. I hate combats and dungeons in these games, when i love the same things in 8 and 16 bits rpg (and less 32), why? Because nowadays, generally and not only in RPG's, gameplay is story filler...

Funny you should say that. Pokemon has a lot of lore.

Yeah, but it's not like anyone knows any of it.
You tell me the name of ONE PERSON who knows that Professor Oak is close friends with the Cinnabar Island Gym Leader, or that Clefairy comes from outer space!

Oh wait. Me.

Also, the library in D/P/P and the pokedex.
...I don't remember finding a library.
A church, yes. But not a library.

It's not important, though. It just IS because it's a long series.

In that little port town. Can't remember the name, but it's a nice little read.
oh...um...Canalave? Or maybe Sunnyshore...? Something like that.
Either way, you're right. There's tons of lore to be found, if you look for it.
BTW, what do they worship in that church?
It seemed like it could've been a reference to Christianity...
Yep, Canalave. And i've always wondered what was up with the church...
"Oh, dear, what ever am I doing?"

...

The things that really bother me are bad voice acting, the cast of characters being typical teenagers without unique personalities, the whole "destined heroes" thing as before mentioned, and of course, the word "power" being spammed to no end. Oh, and for some reason the main character having blonde hair in combination with having a sword thing bothers me.

That's Cloud's popularity's fault.

Yeah, but it still makes you wonder why the stereotype wasn't white hair or something considering both Firion and Cecil had white hair (I think) and those were real popular games back then.
You are comparing FF7's popularity to FF2 and FF4.

I'll just leave it at that.
That's true...I think the massive army of FFVII fans could easily outnumber the amount of FFII or IV fans, but that's another subject. What's sort of funny, though, is the same game (FFVII) started the whole wytte hayre is teh evilz!! stereotype as well. <AhemSephiroth> Square must feel good about themselves.
