I tried introducing my 10 year old cousin to FF4, he didn't even get out of the very first castle.
He doesn't like reading. ):
While this does happen from time to time, it really depends on the person. Give your 10 year old cousin some time to grow up and appreciate storyline over shooting things. :|
I recently introduced a friend who's not much of a gamer to Earthbound. He was skeptical at first, but I told him "just make it to the first dungeon. I'll tell you when you're there."
He sat there and played it for most of the afternoon, and got all the way to Lilliput Steps. And I don't mean emulator-played-it. I mean on a real SNES, the way it was meant to be played.
Now, any time Earthbound is mentioned, he gets a little misty-eyed and mumbles something about "That game is awesome..."

...and as a rebuttal to Karsuman's assertion that no one likes true "old school" games, I am currently playing through Dragon Quest IV on the DS, and have recently played through Dragon Quest III on an emulator.
The DS version is about 100x better and easier to get into! Also, I like the new optional dungeon (the MINDFUCK CAVEHOUSE LAVAPIT RAINBOWBIRD).
Also, the GBC (or plain GB? I don't remember) DQIII game is pretty fun~

FF4, A SUMMARY BY CRAZE
---------------------------------------
Everybody dies, then they really aren't dead, but then some die again anyway but some of them are still alive. Then you go to the moon!

post=95105post=95093They way I read it, it was "RTP seems to be used in old-school type games".
I'm not entirely sure what you're getting at. Actually, I am, I just don't see why it is a necessary reaction to what I said. People use the graphics they do in games either because they want to, feel it bests suits their game or it's the best they can do. I definitely wasn't trying to imply there was anything wrong with using RTP.
So my question was, "Is it okay to use RTP for a game that doesn't try to be old-school, or would people think that I was trying to do that (make it seem old-school), and stop playing?"
I meant that people who use RTP probably usually aren't using it thinking it will make their game old school. Heroes Realm uses RTP but from a graphica standpoint, I think it's the sprites themselves that lend it more an oldschool look. But it's not like aesthetic values are the only ones that contribute to a game feeling old school.
As for the question, I wouldn't really worry about it. Make the game you want to make with the graphics you want it to have. You can't control how people will receive your game and no matter what you do someone will likely be put off. Just do your best and if you make a good game, someone will likely notice and play it.
