I have never played FF1 with a Fighter (usually I play MNK/THF/WHM/BLM), and one time I named all my party members variations of the name "Alexander." I think it was XAVIER/ALEX/YALE/DOWN (don't ask about the last one).
I've only played Dawn of Souls, though. I wish I could hack it and make it harder - I would edit that game in a heartbeat.
EDIT: I LOVE GOOGLE http://www.zophar.net/hacks/gba/final-fantasy-1-dawn-of-souls/Final-Fantasy-Mod-of-Balance-619.html

When I first played it, I was 4 or 5, and I don't think I understood any of it. I thought that black mages looked cute though. My friends dad got it for his birthday, and we erased over his file the next morning by accident.
When I was a little older (6?), I used a fighter, black belt, white mage and black mage. It took me a long time to realize that you could equip weapons... I think when you upgrade your class I figured it out. I remember that area of the Earth cave where there's a battle every step you take... I didn't really catch on (same with Dragon Warrior three and the golden claw).
Never tried funny names I don't think, I took it all serious.
Getting the people who speak a different language to be understandable was quite the accomplishment I thought, despite us (my bro and I) getting help.

I rented FF when I was about five. I liked how I could choose my own characters and like Canuck, I thought the Black Mages were really cool. I don't think I got very far. We got a copy when I was in fourth grade and played it some more, but the furthest I got was after getting the boat from the pirates. Now I have Origins and I'm somewhere after when you get the airship. Never have completed the game.
Actually, I don't really like the first Final Fantasy. It never gives you an idea of where you are supposed to ho.

If you talk to the townspeople, you'll be fine. Once you get the airship, just go to the places you've not been to (this is made easy with the map screen and the little yellow dots that display the location of locations) and the game is pretty much owned.
That patch for Dawn of Souls is great. Updated gameplay from the NES and Garland is actually an interesting battle!
Crazy Horses can own your party, so get Sleep! That's right, use status effects.

I didn't use status effects in games until I was at least 12. I don't see how I got so far in Dragon Warrior games without using them. I must've just leveled up to shit.

Best Party: White Mage, Corpse, Corpse, Corpse
2nd Best: White Mage, White Mage, White Mage, White Mage
Done.
Actually the bestest best best best party (in terms of being stupidly overpowered) is Fighter, Black Belt, Black Belt, Red Mage.
I have spent a pathetically high amount of time playing FF1.
I have beaten the game with solo characters in every class except thief and black mage, which I have deemed impossible. Neither class can manage to defeat Astos.
However, I'm sure if the Thief was allowed to class change, they would steamroll the game as a Ninja.
The best solo class is White Mage.

I've done it.
ASTOS is... a complete asshole, solo-thief.
One needs:
a) RUB to miss;
b) ICE2/FIR2/LIT2 to come out wimpy, and
c) SLO2 needs to miss/wear off quickly.
After that, LICH is a lesser version of ASTOS. And then the fucking Ice Cave
After that though? NINJA. : ) FAST + MASMUNE? Yes please.

Holy damn, that was a grand LP. IKA is my new hero.
Anyway, uh... When I was a wee lad, before I had developed any semblance of a soul -- maybe four years old? -- I'd wake up every morning and immediately boot up my brother's copy of FF1. After hastily forming a FI/TH/BB/RM party (all of which mysteriously shared the given name "AAAA"), I'd make a bee-line for the Temple of Fiends and engage Garland in a decisive battle. The outcome of these gutsy encounters was, unfortunately, uniform defeat - probably 'cause I didn't know how to gain levels or equip equipment.
If nothing else, though, I gotta applaud four-year-old-me's audacity. I'm surprised I even got as far as I did. Nowadays I have a hard enough time reaching Garland in good health with a well-prepared party, let alone underleveled and unequipped.

Yes that was a killer LP.
Also, I take that back. Red Mage is the easiest soloer. Especially early on, he just dominates.
Dr. Pockets: Consider it an honor that you were knocked down at such an early age.
