First off, I feel it contains some of Nobuo's finest work, like Rose Battle, The Rebel Army, and especially Black Dragon

Second, I enjoyed leveling through play style. When not abused by hitting your own party or the like, it creates a constant progression of difficulty that appealed to me.

Third, it taught me a few things about placing monsters in enemy groups. Pairing the monster that confuses allies with the one that raises the party's attack; or pairing the monster that casts Blind with the monster that has high evasion. It made battles more than just hack-and-slash, and in my experience, far more entertaining. It also lent a degree of difficulty that most contemporary FFs lack; being a player who doesn't mind dying from time to time, I enjoyed that as well.

Lastly,

Firion looks badass.

EDIT: It's worth mentioning that Minwu, the first character to be fully devoted to White Magic, is a dude. Take that, Rosa. Also worth mentioning are the first Chocobos, the first Cid, and the first FF villains to kill off characters. Not to mention the fact that Emperor Mateus takes over hell after you kill him.

That quoted, I fucking love FFII.

While I doubt anyone here has FFII zealotry like I do, I figured it could use it's own thread considering how much it came up in the other thread.

Thoughts?
FF II has a fair amount of potential in terms of its lore, characters, and setting, and the gameplay wasn't half bad either, it was sort of a Saga Frontier/FF thing going on. The thing is for me, its that its kinda lacking in both, the framework is there, but the story/lore/characters/setting isn't really fleshed out and the gameplay can be all sorts of whack (having to grind fukken ULTIMA to level 16 just to have it do acceptable damage, what the fuck).

It definitely has potential but Square keeps remaking it over and over instead of actually giving it some real backbone.
I like do a Solo Challenge in FF2. :p

I my opinion, FFII has one of the best stories in the series. I like the game, but I've never beat it. How does the password thing evolve? Is it annoying or simple?
@Feldshlacht: I believe Ultima's damage is based on the level of every single spell the user possesses. Therefore, level using 16 Ultima alone is far less powerful than using Ultima with a full arsenal of level 16 spells.

The passwords stay simple throughout the whole thing.

I dislike how they had to make a game-breaking sword that hides within roughly thirty minutes of playtime, and is unobtainable afterwards.
I have mixed feelings on FFII. I like the way you can raise statistics and all that, and I liked the story to boot. But I hated the way the dungeons were, and the random battles were slightly more annoying than the other games cause it was next to impossible to run in this game.

The final boss alone is a twat (well the PSX and above.) since it can hit you and recover HP of its own, not a fun trait I'd say. Plus having the Blood Sword kills all challenge to the game. Thought its funny to have it kill the final boss in one/two hits.
My favorite thing about FF2 is the leveling system, no matter how broken it is. Something about things leveling up depending on how much you use em really got me. Any other games that use this system, but like, a lot more refined?
Edit: Firion is a badass.

D-Bones: Oblivion w/ AF Leveling mod.
I find it hard to play NES games for the first time now. I like the original because I played it when it came out. I didn't like the remakes of any of the Final Fantasy games really.

I may download the original on the VC and see if I can get through it in Japanese.

Oh lawd... I hate Oblivion...
I didn't really take a liking to FFII. I finished it and all, but I didn't think it was as enjoyable as FF1, and it was mainly because of the battle system. Magic was long and tedious to level up, and didn't really do all that much. If they had to clean it up a bit I might have liked it a bit more.
