MOST UNDERRATED AND OVERRATED RPGS

I really can't think of any RPG as overrated. Is that bad?
Probably a good thing. I'd love to not be annoyed when someone says
[insert RPG here]
is amazing and perfect in every respect.
Hexatona
JESEUS MIMLLION SPOLERS

But, [ my fav RPG here ] is the best and most amazing rpg ever and is far better than that Square RPG. Anyone who can't see that is obviously a fanboy who should be ashamed.
It's hard to say any RPG is overrated these days because there's so much hatred in general for the genre that there are always lots of people bashing any RPG regardless of how good it is. Also I tend to try and see what it is that draws people to fall in love with a game.

One example is Pokemon, which I don't like, but I have tried and can appreciate. I just happen to think that the presentation is game-breaking (way too slow).

nah I'm the same. Maybe I just don't play that many of them lately, but most of the tropes and generic plot BS don't come into the equation at all. I mean, I see them there, but they don't bug me.

but if overrated means really popular for no good reason, though, most of the mainstream games are like that. they aren't awful games but they are not literature by any stretch of da imagination either
Well this topic went all post-modern.

What am I left to hold onto?

My favorite trope in video games is that violence always solves all problems and that there is no rehabilitation for criminals (kill all evildoers!!!). I like games like Metal Gear Solid or superhero games because you can usually complete them without killing anyone.

except the myriad of jails in castles?

Tetris is sexually suggestive too... just like at that "I" block... man.

Having a signature is too mainstream. I'm not part of your system!

Don't buy into Tetris! It's communist Russia's secret plan to win the cold war. The blocks are missiles that crash into buildings and blow up.

I agree. I hate people saying stuff like 'JUST PLAYED X GAME PRETTY DISAPPOINTING' or 'X GAME IS PRETTY TERRIBLE' on a regular basis. I mean, if you can't get any enjoyment out of most of the games you play and you're constantly let down with a cynical attitude, then perhaps its time to find another hobby.

What game doesn't have violence?

There are tons of games that don't use violence as their central mechanic.

Tons of puzzle games were already mentioned. Adventure games are usually not violent. Sim games are not violent (although in some, like Civilization, it's an option). There's also an entire cottage industry of space sim games where the player can advance without ever performing a violent act (EVE Online or X3). A lot of these games make tons of money too!

But yeah I guess if you walk into a Gamestop or something it doesn't really seem that way.
brandon come on, I don't think he really meant that the Thomas the Tank Engine and Hannah Montannah games have violence in them. Actually I'm not sure what his post was saying but I don't think he was being that serious.

At first I thought this was a dumb post, but I thought about it more, and I guess if someone actually didn't like the majority of games they played, then they must be either a) very unlucky or b) not terribly big fans of video games. I guess if someone just sampled every game before they bought it, that problem could be remedied. Thankfully I pretty much only buy SNES games nowadays so I can always get the rom if I want to sample it (I'm a big console-phile, I hate playing games on emulators, and no I don't have a particular stance on copyright law and its jurisdiction over emulation/etc)

See the thing with this is that people like this are video game fans! I'm not talking about people who just can't get into video games. I'm talking about the people that actually profess to like video games, talk about them, post on forums about them, and know about them, but they have this terribly cynical attitude where A. games that are already out are according to them are 'overrated and not as good as people think they are' or B. new games that just came out 'haven't met their expectations and are disappointed by them.'

And let's not forget the variant of C. every popular game that most people like are terrible to them. Also of course there is the possible subcategory of C; C-1, where if you ask them of a game they DO like, it's almost always answer with a relatively obscure game that many people haven't played. For example, a C who claims to hate the entire Final Fantasy series will most likely rant and rave about Planescape Torment is the ONLY good game released by ANYONE EVER.

Those kind of people.
I think that a solution for a lot of people who love video games but hate every video game they play should like . . . step back from video games. If you don't play video games every day and you don't watch game trailers all the time and don't preorder things and you don't get outrageously psyched about everything that comes out, you might not have the sort of outrageous expectations that tend to lead to disappointment.

I love video games and I like most of the video games I play. Many of the games I play are not actually very good but are on clearance so I don't really expect much of them. But, I don't have time to play games 40 or 50 or 60 hours a week like a used to, back when I bitched online about how all the video games I played nonstop were really awful and always a disappointment. So, I have more fun when I play games or something. Occasionally I come across something really great - recently it was Batman - and I really love it. I think that my former self, who would have skipped class and beat it in a single sitting, would probably go online complaining about the parts I didn't like even though I was clearly obsessed with it.
There's also the video game fans that essentially just fall to the hype. Developers tend to promise all sort of things and claim that their game is the second coming. Then the game ships with bugs and content missing. A casual gamer that didn't follow the development might be happy that the game is good but someone who followed it all along will be disappointed that promised feature x isn't in.

I would take Empire Total War as the example. There was a promised multiplayer campaign that the game wasn't shipped with and the game had some nasty bugs. The reception was overall pretty good though, but hardcore fans were disappointed with what they saw.

You could say a different example is the Batman game. Essentially when you hear "Batman game" you think of a shitty license game that couldn't possibly be good. The expectations are lowered so when the game actually is good it's like the second coming. (Chronicles of Riddick also)

I think it all boils down to that gamers for some reason believe the hype...
