LANGUAGE IN GAMES

Glad I wasn't the only one offended by Brandon's comment, I tried to play it off with a bit of light hearted humor (which happily he reciprocated) but still...
Yeah swearism is the worst kind of discrimination I am not impressed with you RMNbros. ):
To be fair I never said I was "offended", Yoshio did. I don't get "offended".
Okay, okay, so who wants to touch me?

I personally dislike a game that has a lot of spelling errors, poor grammar (where you think English is not the native language of the programmer), and a lot of profanity. That just makes me assume that the programmer is either 14 years old, or 14 years old mentally.
On the other hand, I have no problem with the usage of profanity in these games. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be in somebody's game. There isn't some sort of link between RPG-making and some anti-profanity moralist movement. It logically would appear in a game as much as it is used RL unless there's a good reason otherwise.
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. The presence of profanity in a game should for the most part be the same as the presence of profanity in RL, meaning that each individual person uses it differently. If you have a character who uses profanity in virtually every sentence, then that's not far fetched; but if every character uses a lot of profanity, without any who shy away from it, that's just unrealistic.

I don't like it when EVERYONE swears like a sailor, just like I don't like a cast of introverts, or any other homogeneous cast.

I guess its best if we don't touch Kef's posts with a 9 foot pole
I'm fighting the urge to tear into him as this topic would probably get very, very ugly if I did (and he's probably just trollin' anyway)
jesus, please do not do that... i don't think anyone here will be able to handle the power of yashio...unleashed..,
Unless used in the right way, swearing can be really lame and annoying in a game. I hate it when amateur games have swears littered around because they don't have anything useful to say. Just saying, this stuff usually looks bad if it's spammed like that. It makes it seem like the characters don't have their own personalities sometimes.
Now I'm not saying that I'm not going to use or won't use some swears in my own projects, but it would be very controlled. My current project gives off a vibe that you'd think it would be loaded with 'em, but I'm trying to substitute it with other elements to have the same outcome, if not more effective.
I think most people get the ideas from today. I mean, I guess it depends on your environment, but I think it's pretty bad now.
Also, I believe it's a better idea to use the classic $%&@! when making extremely profane statements in a game. Final Fantasy VII is a perfect example. Barret and Cid went crazy with the language, but for the most part, it was censored. So was the dialogue of a lot of NPCs. Then again, it really fits the setting of the game. REALLY well.

If your project is entirely fictional with no grounding in reality, then you should be creative with your foul language. Make up new slurs and swears to suit your world. Douglas Adams came up with some notable examples in the Hitchhiker series. "You zarking turlingdrome!"
If your project is based in the real world, or some stage of history, do some research on its people, and come to your own conclusions on what might have passed for foul language in those days. It may surprise you that words considered slanderous today may have been commonplace in earlier times. Did you know that "windf***er" was once a perfectly acceptable term for the bird now known as the kestrel?
And if all else fails, lower-life-form epithets ("you worm," etc.) are always in season.

I dont plan on using any in any of my games... maybe a dropped 'damn' here or there, but nothing really profane.
@Indogutsa - Youre forgetting shows like Farscape, Battlestar Gallactica and Firefly, all which had their own way of swearing while not actually doing it.
I think Farscape and BSG-origional even shared a few of the same words. I cant remember.

To the people that think without swear words you'll be resorting to: "Gosh darn it" in tragic scenes, you've never played Mother 3.
Whenever you apply a swear word in a game, or in any other piece of work, you should think clearly about three things:
Who is swearing?
When is the character swearing?
Why is the character swearing?
Whenever I write anything and whenever there's dialogue, I tend to think of the situation at hand, the people involved, and what each others' responses will be. For example, if you're character's a teenage or an adult who isn't a goody-two-shoes and they're in a conversation with another friend about someone they don't like or if something in the conversation bothers one of the characters either about who they're talking with or if they're mentioning someone they don't like, it's okay to let a curse word or two fly if you want. Or, if something surprises your character, don't be afraid to let him or her say something, depending on his or her overall personality. However, when it gets to the point where everyone, even the little children, start talking like they're from South Park for no reason whatsoever, just because the author can't think of anything better to write, then no, that's just immature, not to mention stupid.
I don't like to read, watch, or play anything if it's all just a bunch of pointless cursing. I mean, seriously, if I want to hear someone swear up a storm, there's always the Angry Video Game Nerd and even HE knows how to swear and when it's both cool and funny. I mean, there's got to be a good reason as to why someone's saying a word or calling someone by a certain name. Yes, swearing can be cool and if done right, it can also be funny, but there's a certain line between awesome and bad. If you just want to make a game that consists of foul language and awkward humor, be my guest. Just remember that unless you're a man of good humor or if you're clever enough with the language, there's a good chance that it'll suck.
Bottom line is, use your swearing sparingly. Don't just make your characters swear just because you think it's cute or funny. Take your characters' language seriously, even if it's a comedy.

The lack of swearing AND the dark and emotional plotline fit nicely into the setting of Mother 3.
Now try not swearing in Grand Theft Auto IV.

this is really good advice.
Swearing in games is silly and unprofessional. I mean games is the only place where I feel this way. In rm it just looks immature, especially if something is poorly written. Like idk ppl drop f bombs to have realistic dialogue or whatever but it should be more than that. They do swear in like 3d games nowadays because games are the new movies, but RM is snes, not 3d movie games.
So basically what everyone else said. But there is a solution, you can make your own swears that are unique to your game's world, which adds to the feel of the enviornment.
