A TOPIC ABOUT DRIVING.

I am really surprised with the amount of people who took lessons.
I had to take lessons. I was not allowed to get a driver's license without x hours of instructor-supervised driving.
Do you drive? If yes, are you a good driver? If no, why not?
I drive, I'm not overly good though. I tend to say that I drive like a woman. A bit overly cautiously and things like that.

-What car do you have? Post pictures if you have any.
I have a Renault Twingo. A light green one. I think it's either from 1994 or 1996. I don't know much about cars really.
It looks very much like this one:

(though perhaps dirtier and with a bit lighter green)

-Had any accidents or has anything bad or funny happened to you?
I've only been in very small accidents. That is I've reversed into street signs and rocks and ditches... And I spun off the road once.

-Were you or are you lucky enough to have parents that will paid for your lessons?
Yeah. Driving lessons were my 18th birthday present I think. In Finland you don't get to drive before you're 18 and you have to take about two months of lessons before being able to take the test.

When I had my first lesson I actually had no idea how a car really worked. The whole shifting gears was an alien concept to me and it actually took me quite some time before I understood all the things about it. (Like the fact that if you don't have a gear in you don't actually have to hold the clutch down and can just let the car sit there... Yes... It's dumb but come on, no one told me this)
Before the car I had never driven any kind of motor-driven vehicle.

-How many times did it take you to pass?
I passed both the exams at the first try. Fortunately. I think part of it was that the instructor and I were both happy that Finland had won an important hockey game the day before...

I sort of like driving. Sometimes when I have time (and fuel in the tank) I tend to take strange alternate routes and see where I end up. Similar to when I bike or walk except at a different scale. I really like driving as alone as possible. Whenever there's two more cars than mine around I get itchy and can't enjoy driving the same way.

For a couple of summers I dealt out morning papers in the rural areas and that was great fun driving around alone on the road putting newspapers in boxes that were a couple of kilometers apart on gravel roads. (and driving one of the postal cars with the steering wheel on the "wrong side" was my first enounter with automatic gear shifting too. And that was weird for a while until I got used to it)

But those damn hares always running in front of the car. In the end I decided to fuck it and not slow down for them if they have a death wish let them have it.
alright the edit and quote buttons are too close to each other....

When I used to have a Chevy Blazer I hit two deer at the same time. Funny part is, I saw them coming and slowed down a considerable amount, enough to hit one in the ass at like 10mph and the other idiot ran head first into my door.

Yes. I am a great driver as a matter of fact. Driving in Utah weather will teach you many things.

I drive a 2003 VW Jetta. I don't have any pictures available. I wish it was a turbo diesel, but alas it is just the 4 cylinder 2.0 liter. The head unit is spotty and doesn't play CDs right and the climate control panel fuse went out.

Nope.

Driver's Ed class is required in my state. It was like, $40 to sign up when I was in high school. My dad paid for it. In Utah you are required to drive for X hours after you get a permit. However I didn't get my permit until I was 18, so that rule did not apply to me. I was able to get my license immediately after. However I was off screwing around out of state for a few months after that so it didn't happen for a bit.
-How many times did it take you to pass?
I got an 89% in the driver's ed class (too lazy to do all the stupid homework) and a 94% on the driving test first time.

- Yes. That's....subject to discrimination.
- 07 Toyota Camry.
- Yes. I've been in two large accidents, totaling my last car and almost totaling my wife's car. I've also had an old guy back into my bumper that I begrudgingly let go.
- Yes, driver's ed isn't that expensive. Some people could even get it as an elective in school.
- Took the three lessons that it came with. Ironically, didn't bother getting my license until years later.

WIP: Your driver's ed had homework? Man, that's lame. I woulda failed that one.

For me, Drivers ed was about 800 dollars. It's really expensive here in Canada.

Ark, I was going to ask what you had done with your porsche but see you had already answered it.

Not now. I got my license at 16, let it expire, didn't bother since. I am 23 now. I don't drive because I don't really need it to get around, so why spend hundreds a month (I don't have) when I could walk or bike anyway. I prefer the exercise, anyhow.

-What car do you have? Post pictures if you have any.
sorry. I have a pretty sweet bike though!

-Had any accidents or has anything bad or funny happened to you?
Nope.

My parents haven't given me a dime in eight years.

One. Driving's easy. I am pretty inexperienced with a car, but I drive a forklift at work just fine, so I think I can pick up where I left off pretty easily.
Not to be all up in your grill Kef but I'm surprised you let your license expire because there is a shitload you can't do without it. Unless of course you have a State ID or something as well.

Yeah of course I have an ID. Along with a social security card, several bank cards, etc. Really, the only thing I -don't- have right now is a valid driver's license.

Yes, although I don't drive at the moment. Wife drops my off at work. I'm very good - I always signal, shouldercheck, and can actually drive like a normal person when confronted by thing like PARKING LOTS and STOPS SIGNS unlike the rest of the people in this podunk town.

-What car do you have? Post pictures if you have any.
'97 Ford Taurus. White!

-Had any accidents or has anything bad or funny happened to you?
Not really, although my first time driving was hilarious. Never been behind a wheel before, long dark country road while it's slippery and snowing which overlooked a huge drop and had a small railing. I was like - why meeeeeee

-Were you or are you lucky enough to have parents that will paid for your lessons?
No, we had driver's ed in school.

-How many times did it take you to pass?
Three. First time was because I was tricked by my tester. There's these One-Ways we were driving on and he quickly told me to turn around and get onto the other side to go back the other way. Well, there was this tiny slip of road right there and I turned on to it to turn around, but it turns out that whenever you turn off a one-way, there's a two way street. guess which side I was on? insta-fail.

Second time, she kept making me turn left a billion times because she thought I was an INCH over the line. How she could have seen that from her point of view is beyond me.

This has just reminded me- I seem to recall my father saying something about him wanting me to go to racing school before I go off to University. No idea when I'm going to do that, but it's still a pretty damn awesome thing for your dad to say. "Yeah, um, I'm kind of going to force you to go to racing school because I want you to drive like an awesome badass. Carz are awsum LOL"
