It kinda makes me sad that the great debate between Republican and Democrat (both, I feel, are stupid names for these parties) be reduced to something as trivial as "Who do you trust more, the Government, or the Corporation?" or "Socialism vs. Capitalism" which people seem to think means "Poor vs. Rich".

I remember when the republicans represented the finer points of conservation. Keeping things balanced as much as possible, limited government interference and self regulation, debt repayment, keeping what you earn, blah blah.

Democrats, similarly, seemed more about fairness. Protect the poor, rehabilitate the criminal, social programs, free justice, everyone gets their fair share, the fortunate give to the unfortunate, and keeping an eye on the country so you don't have to.

Personally, I just can't tell the difference anymore. True, I'm sure there are some differences, but now it's all: Average Joe vs. Elitist Snob. In reality, it's just the Great Dumbocrasy vs. Itself. People just associate anything they don't like with the party they choose not to align themselves with. Why else would the disenfranchised poor hate a party that is supposed to be devoted to social programs to help the poor!? Elitist Snob could just as easily apply to some Big-Oil Baron interested on keeping the govt out of its pockets as it does to University Yuppie who needs a hand to get through classes without a crushing debt.

The only real thing separating the two parties is that both are saying, "God I hate those other guys, and you should too. I'm sure everything would be awesome if they weren't around." Just to keep you distracted from the really big problems because they figure you'll go batshit insane if you realize that they just people who don't know how to fix crap any better than you do.

*sigh* Sorry everyone, it was just in a my head and I had to write it down. I'm north of the border, so I may be wrong, but from what I can see, this is what the political system looks like. Canada's not much better, politics-wise, but that's another thread. Personally, I think having corporations police themselves is the dumbest idea since Canada caving into pressure and dismantling the Avro Arrow.
OP, your post made me feel happy inside, even if your summary of the two main political parties was a bit over-generalized (and I can't fault you for this at all, I mean who's gonna write a dissertation on politics in a forum about RPGs :p).

To contribute, and keep in mind I am saying this as someone with a very conservative stance on economic policy: fuck the Republican Party. Furthermore, fuck the Democrats. Examining them on candidate platforms and legislative voting history, it looks eerily like they're just two sides of a larger Let's Enlarge Federal Government Until It Eclipses Everything Party.

I haven't seen the dual-party "system" we have going here do any good at all in my entire life, in fact the only real effect I've seen it have is to create a sort of retarded reactionary backlash against an entire party when a president repeatedly fucks up instead of just against that individual, leading most people not to examine what exactly went wrong during the presidency in question but instead to just vote for the other team next election and think everything will be okay (protip for moronic voters: the president isn't the only person in the government with the authority to act against your best interests).

I'm sure Karl Marx is rolling in his grave so fast they could hook him up to a generator and power a town.
The only Marx I accept is Groucho.
Unfortunately, you are very right Hexatona. The political parties are becoming such a gray area the only color separating the two is blind loyalism and hatred of the opposites. In simpler terms, a person simply declares him/herself a patron of a political party and hates the other one. Thusly, during elections, the victor is not defined by his or her qualities, but how many individuals are in the same political party as they are.
I must blatenly agree with uh; fuck the Republicans and the Democrats. The real war now is between the liberals and the conservatives.
The system is working as intended.

It's your own fault if you're unhappy with the system.
Not really, as Hexa is Canadian.
No, the system is still working as intended.

Vote for candidates looking to nuke the shit out of America. There you go.

I approve of this.

I guess what I'm glibly trying to say is that politics is easiest thing to involve yourself in. Anybody can do it. The realization, however, that nobody agrees with each other and everybody has thousands of different opinions isn't easy to swallow.

Two party system sucks? Sure. Not American? That's a bummer. But you're only as involved as you make yourself be. And while I understand how outsiders would be interested in a particular country's politics considering the sphere of influence, I'd contest that it's not nearly as bad as you make it out to be.
I agree that they're quite similar but they have differences.

Overhauling the health care system is not something the Republicans would do, and it is a significant move towards progress in the eyes of the rest of the west. Also, attitudes on war seem to be split down party lines. It's true that Obama is going for adding a lot more troops to Afghanistan, but his party is not behind him in it. These kinds of differences are quite significant.

You could say Obama is a gray area, or that Obama isn't following only party lines, but doing what he thinks is right, regardless if it's considered Democrat (health care) or Republican (adding more troops). So you can love or hate him as a person and not as a Democrat.
Republican and Democrat (both, I feel, are stupid names for these parties)

at least republican bears relation to the system of government

In regards to President Obama, or really any President when they first get to office, I always imagine their first day as this:

President: Wow, this is fantastic! My First Day on the job! Well, I better get started if I want to keep all my election promises!

Brief Man: Here you go, Sir! *thump* here's all the required reading for today!

President: Oh my, this will take all week!

Brief Man: Actually, you have to read that by lunch. Followed by the most boring meetings you've ever been in. And then you have to read books to school children. Then there's the press conference. And then another meeting. Followed by endless signing of papers. And if you really want to, we can stay up past midnight trying to put in some of those changes you promised - buuut here's some more papers talking about how doing them would be impractical, or a bad idea. *thump*

No disrespect man but this is soooo wrong. Implementation of ANY healthcare reform requires a concerted effort from hundreds of people from both parties, and it was a huge campaigning issue on both candidates running platforms in '08. A tiny bit of Googling could net you some specifics on the strategies proposed by both Democrats and Republicans but I guess if you really cared you would have at least put forth that minimal effort already, so *shrug*

Seriously, saying "this thing that everyone agrees is what our country desperately needs is something Republicans would not do" just makes you sound like a DNC mouthpiece :v and I'm sure you don't want that.

2 terms nearly turned Clinton into a corpse. I envy no president's job.

on the other hand G Dubbs aging is more of a blessing, his confused and bewildered look doesn't seem so out of place now.
