Thanks, fixed ;) Now re-read it!
because i am a greedy fucking bastard and needed reassurance about my lack of ambition i ate it all up. all of the ff8 hot dogs
FF8 is a weird case in the series for everyone because it is a jumbled mess but not without its moments. The kind of moments that makes its nostalgia value strong. However theres no fucking denying the writer's head is full of ape-shit (you cannot defend the orphanage thing and that stupid space part {all of it}).
btw my perceptions of you have changed, geobro

Honestly, all criticisms aside, FF8's setting utterly fascinates me, yet there is so little history to it.
pretty sure all the laguna / kiros / ward sections are exposition for the recent history of the world as well as character flavour / contrast but yeah, there is still not enough. you can also over-do it though and i'm sure that's what they had in mind. also kind of returning to they are average teenagers, do they know a lot about the history of the world?

There IS a lot of history explained in the Ultimanias, but they should have put it in the game.
For example, this little nugget about Balamb I found.
HISTORY
An island nation with abundant natural environments and surrounded by a beautiful ocean. During a time of war it became independent from the Holy Dollet Empire, and has since remained calm, without any unnecessary interventions into other nations' affairs. Even after the Balamb Garden was set up 12 years ago, there was no change to the national peace, and has managed to maintain a moderate financial wealth as well. One of the nation's characteristics is the design of many of its buildings, which is mainly based on curved lines with streamline patterning. In the interests of conserving the natural scenery, the houses in the town are kept to a uniform height.
GEOGRAPHY AND FOREIGN RELATIONS
Its warm and gentle climate makes it a pleasant environment to live all year round. From the edge of the island one can see the western continent dimly in the distance. The western continent, where the Galbadian territory expands out, and Balamb are connected by an undersea tunnel, and by using the transcontinental railroad running through it travel between the two countries is simple. The harbour in the town not only serves as port for general ships, but also functions as a departure and arrival area for SeeD vessels. The Fire Cave located on the east side of the island is known as a dangerous area seething with molten lava, but as there is a G.F. force field inside the cave, it is used by Garden students hoping to improve their combat abilities as a location for field training.
LIFESTYLE AND INDUSTRY
With its refreshing atmosphere, the city in Balamb is a popular tourist destination, and the souvenirs sold at the shop in front of the train station is one of the providers of valuable tourism revenue for the city. The Balamb Fish caught in the coastal waters is a massive fish with bright turquoise scales, and thanks to its good taste is considered one of the world's three greatest delicacies. However, because there is a similar breed of fish which can be poisonous, amateurs need to take care when cooking with it. The sea breeze common to all coastal towns means that the corrosion of metal is sped up, so at the garage of the rental car shop painstaking maintenance is preformed on its vehicles.
MILITARY
They have lived peacefully for a long time, and there does not appear to have been many situations demanding the use of an army. The existence of Balamb Garden and its SeeDs seems to give the citizens a sense of relief.

HOLY DOLLET EMPIRE BATMAN
Dollet being the remnants of a former empire WAS something that was touched on in the game. I'm trying to get the guy who translated the above tidbit to translate more. There is a LOT about the background that wasn't really fleshed out.
also kind of returning to they are average teenagers, do they know a lot about the history of the world?
Well, it's not like they went to regular school, so they should have a decent amount of academic knowledge. However, I meant less of an actual HISTORY knowledge and more of a thing where contemporary differences between areas of origin flavor personalities. For example, Irvine is from Galbadia and Selphie is from Trabia, but that has absolutely no influence on their personalities at all.
way to pick the two most contrasting characters in terms of their manner! this could be influenced by their heritage but this isn't made explicit, and it doesn't need to be either. we know where they're both from and we can make that step ourselves.

I am kind of on the same plane as you, but I don't think video games are at that point, at least not the intended point anyway.

Honestly I could have picked any two characters and it would have made the same difference. I was trying to point out that where the characters are from in the game doesn't influence their personalities at all, and that's not very realistic.
What I got out of attempting to the conversation between geodude and feld
Feld: There's some shit points
Geo: Nuh-uh, look deeper
Feld: Dude, I looked deep, shits there, I'll explain why.
Geo: I don't have time for this. It's obvious.
Feld: Alright, I'll give more examples.
Geo: You totally don't get it.
Feld: More examples then? Sure, I don't mind that you're being condescending, I'll just ignore that because I'm a fucking saint.
Geo: Predestination.
Feld: Bo-ring.
Geo: Fuck you mother fucker I will cut you.

Alternatively, your conversation made me realize that I'm not ready to play the game in a second language.

Wow can I go back to saying how dumb FFXIII looks now?
For the record, I really want to like FFVIII more than I really do.
