In this site, first you get the game, then you get the power, THEN you get the women.
I'd believe you...if there were more ladies on the site, heh.
post=134283post=134251I really do wish my page looked this good.
http://rpgmaker.net/games/2035/I just finished the character page for In Praise of Peace, and chaos helped me with (re: did all of) the CSS work last night. I am currently mapping.
oh for fuck's sake
I'm getting ready to upload the Carlsev rar/zip file. Hopefully I didn't create any glitches when I switched to Windows 7. If so, I'm sure people will let me know :)

Monsters. The last part of the database that needs doing.
Do you really do the database in this order? Like, all actors, all classes, all skills, all items, all equips, all monsters? As a matter of fact, do you make games in the order of "all maps, all database, all eventing"?
I just could never do it that way...I used to do something a lot like it but I found that formula lead to giving up on projects with a full database and like five minutes of gameplay. Right now I constantly vary up what I'm working on (I'll make two maps, then event this cutscene, then set up seven skills in the database, then create a monster, then go back and event the scene leading up to the fight with the monster, etc.) to keep from getting bored/burnt out.
Craze's staggeringly awesome video
By the way, super-n00bish question?
How exactly does one make a video of a game? Every single time I have tried this over the years I have found the software unimaginably buggy and my computer (no matter how new it was) totally inadequate to the task.
Craze, that looks AMAZING and I can't say anything but that that looks amazing so isn't that something that should go in say, a screenshot thread which omfg you guys this isn't? : P I don't know maybe I just like it so much because the tone/appearance of it remind me of Vagrant Story a little.
Pay for your hypocrisy for telling me how you accomplished the FFT letter-by-letter-text sound and also how exactly you evented those cutscene images so smoothly? I am really terrible at manipulating the show-picture event command, okay, it has always been by achilles heel throughout the years.
I guess...helpful critique would be that...I do not particularly like Padrick's way of speaking? His way of talking around the old "he's either very brave or extremely stupid" cliche really irked me, it just game out as rambling and awkward rather than clever or good characterization. Yes, all I can criticize in that video is the writing. Which there wasnn't much of to criticize since it's mostly showing off a battle.
When I make a new game, I plan out the classes/characters almost completely (as a first draft) including stats and skills and equipment and items. I then enter all that information into the database. I also plan out conditions and elements and add them. I then make template Battle groups with all the battle events I expect to use in the game. I make monsters and monster groups as I go along in the development of the game. I only touch the other stuff when I feel the need to tweak the numbers.
Mapping I make as I go along in the game. So first I plan out some quest(s), then I map them, then I event them (with cutscenes, NPCs, treasure, etc...) and then I create monsters and monster groups, and then I assign the groups to the appropriate maps. Rinse and repeat until the game is done.
I am almost completely unable to start work on the plot/quest part of the game without having the database (except monsters) 95% complete.
Also, I would love some sort of video making tutorial, because my attempts to make videos turn out TERRIBLE.

I use this:
http://camstudio.org/
It's very simple, intuitive, effective, and it doesn't leave that annoying "recorder with hypercam" thing on top of the video.
It records on AVI, and then I edit on Windows Movie Maker.

Thanks, Calunio! (Although the issue's by no means closed and I'd love to hear other people's opinions.)
How much editing is usually required?
How much editing is usually required?
Depends on what you want. If you just want to show some gameplay, you usually just have to cut a bit from the beginning and from the end. If you want to assemble like... a trailer... it's more editing, but it's still just cutting, drag-n-drop, no big deal. You would have to use movie maker anyway because the AVI file output of Cam Studio is really big.

I record using the full version of FRAPs and then just export it as a .wmv using Windows Movie Maker.
The text sound thing is a standard feature of YEZ Custom Message System. I simply hard-coded certain facesets to use different pitches. It would be easy enough to add a scriptlet that made it based on a variable instead.
Padrick talks like that because the game is trying to be as pretentious as possible. I love writing in that insufferable manner. At least you have Martin to balance him out!
(I am not ignoring the rest of Max's post; I have responded via AIM.)

...to make this post not entirely worthless: I spent some time planning out the first few of the game's bosses beyond "hello my name is "chapter (X) boss" and I use graphic (Y)!". Yanfly's Melody battle system has a TON of power, especially in conjunction with his AI script. I will probably blog about boss-making using these tools!
<Chapter 2 Boss> Oh wait I have Damage Minus on me skfnslkn fuck you Lun
*Chapter 2 Boss casts a strong Gaia spell specifically on slot 2 (Lun's slot)!
<Lun> Oh god no you hit me last time and I'm weak to G -
*Lun dies horribly.
