I don't have a problem with fan games only if they stick to the series. I have seen some damn good fan games.

However, I do have a problem with games being named Final Fantasy, and the games have nothing to do with Final Fantasy. The games do not have any of the original Final Fantasy characters. That is not a big problem, but then the rest of the game is just another RPG game. The terms in Final Fantasy games are not used.

What do you think of RPG Maker games being named Final Fantasy just to be named Final Fantasy?

Mother 4. That is all.
Fuck me I forgot Mother 4.

Excuse my generalization then, I should elaborate here. What I think, is that:

A) 95% of fangames are bad in some, or usually all ways.
B) The good fangames, while they are amazing in some ways, the talent used to make them could've been spent on something original, and I favor this decision.

I really hate that, too. If you are making a fan game, you should at least make it relevant to the style/storyline/characters of the pre-existing series, and you also shouldn't suck.

I think the reason why many fan games tend to blow because they are made by young, uninspired people who are new to their development tool. They want to praise something that already exists by making a game out of it, and in the end, due to their inexperience, they churn out a crappy game. On the other hand, you get a good developer who knows what they are doing and you can get a masterpiece like Mother 4.

This is why I also disagree with the generalization that "all fan games suck", because it's really not the concept of a fan game that makes the game suck, it's the poor developers who make them. I don't tend to care if a person is taking a pre-existing game series and making it just as long as the output is a good game.
Why are you guys praising Mother 4 when the game isn't even out yet?

Looks cool but you should always reserve judgement until you're actually playing the game.

WAIT THIS JUST IN! All games in the screenshot thread are masterpieces!

I feel like a broken record here. Hasn't this been discussed enough?

Fan games, like any other user made content is subject to one absolute : Most of it is terrible.
I lost an FFIV fangame I was working on because I never made a backup. The feedback for what I was showing was awesome, and I thought it could possibly be one of the great fangames. I would not settle for less. Who knows, but at least it's what I believed. But its true most of the time its like
"Final Fantasy: Don's Adventure" - no point at all. I wonder what would happen to games like The Way and A Blurred Line if they were the same but renamed as Final Fantasy fan games. I can only imagine a worse reception for them. Hell, sometimes a real final fantasy game seems like some random rpg squaresoft made, with the name slapped on its title screen and cartridge. I swear Mystic Quest was an attempt to see if you could sell just anything
so long as it beared the name.

It's similar to any RPG games being named Final Fantasy just to be named Final Fantasy. It seems like a long tradition. It's not like any Final Fantasies have got anything at all to do with each other. Instead they are just randomly named Final Fantasy.

So fangames actually DO follow what previous Final Fantasies done.
I think if your game is a generic enough rpg to pass as an ff fangame regardless of the specific characters and settings involved then the title is the least of your worries.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. FF has an extensive pre-determined set of items/spells/monsters/classes/equipment/etc. that works to make an experience that's fairly easy to get into without having to figure out WHAT DOES GISAR DO? every ten minutes. On top of this, each FF game tends to have a similar "crystal" macguffin/semi-macguffin (whether it's an actual crystal, magicite, eidolons, whatever) theme and a focus on the elements or industry v. not industry (1-5 THE WORLD IS DECAYING, 6-13 YOU HAVE SCIENCE, WE HAVE A TINY MAGIC TOWN). While you can just say "oh that's just FF and easy to fangames to pick up without a thought..." yeah, you can say that because it has been set up and refined for decades. They're not just randomly named FF.
What does Gisar do? They changed all the spell names and crap in FF sometime between FFVI (the last one I played) and now. Same thing with Dragon Quest. All my spell names are unfamiliar and strange.

Gisar is the Phantasy Star tier 2 heal-all Tech.
What is a firaga? some sort of pine tree based attack?
I had never heard of Mother 4. It looks amazing. Better than Mother 3, that's for sure!

Typically the strongest Fire spell in Final Fantasy. In some of the games its just Fire 3, but it's actually Firaga, and has been in all of the Japanese versions since the very first FF. They just started actually translating them correctly in the English FFs.

Fire-Fira-Firaga

All of the elements follow this name theme, such as Blizzard, Blizzara, and Blizzaga.
Does anyone else want to exist under the comforting blanket of Nintendo of America's rewrites and censorship? Because I do, just like the old days.
