YES, ROCK BAND IS AWESOME.
Posts
So last night (until the wee hours of the morning) my wife and I were rocking out with my brother- and sister-in-law (and their friends) on Rock Band for the Xbox 360.
Awesome.
Seriously, this game was a blast to play. Despite the guitar strummer being defective (could only sturm up) and the drum's foot petal snapping (we fixed it with a ruler and some hockey tape), we rocked out hard. My brother-in-law's friend had an extra guitar from GH3 so we had the full band. I played guitar, bass, and drums (with drums being my favorite - even though I have no rhythm).
Bass was the easiest, guitar can get crazy hard but is still easier than the crazy hard drums. But, I enjoyed the drums more because, even though I lack any sort of rhythm, I have even less manual dexterity. My wife loved the vocals (and was quite awesome). She wants a PS3 now so that she can play Rock Band and Singstar. We'll probably pick one up (I have to jump on any opportunity for a new gaming system whenever I can. Plus, might as well get a blu-ray player for my HDTV).
My only complaint was that there weren't enough songs, or song variety. And no Weird Al. But, with Downloadable Content, this is being address. Also, Feb 2008's issue of Official Xbox Magazine will include a free bonus disc with three exclusive songs for the Xbox 360 version of Rock Band.
Has anyone else played this game yet?
PS. Boogie sucks.

Yeah, this game is pretty wicked. I played this with a couple friends the other night, though we didn't have enough people for a vocalist. I was the drummer. I tried the other instruments, but the drums was the only fun one for me, where as everyone else was scared of sucking at it.
I really did suck at it. On "easy", I'd score about 80 for an average score. :P
But it was a lot of fun. It was easy to hit the right drums, but it was hard to get the timing right, and I noticed that if you knew the song decently it was much easier to play it by ear, than by watching the screen for the timing.
Oh, and the drum solos are a lot of fun! Sorta makes me want to take up drums, but I know I'd never any good at them. I don't have the coordination or sense of rhythm for it.
I think maybe next time I'll try out vocals.

I just got to the point where I can somewhat reliably beat Hard songs with drums. I still have some issues with a double kick.

Actually, there is no such thing as a naturally gifted musician. If you want to play drums, then start; just like every other drummer, in the beginning you'll have no coordination or sense of rhythm.
So Kentona, because you posted the same thing on two different forums, I'll post the same reply that I did at GamingW (shadowtext had complained about the singing being wonky):
With singing, certain combinations of difficulty level and song can actually produce strange results in this game. There are songs where the vocalist scoops a lot and if you don't scoop in exactly the same way, you can fail the song if you aren't playing on Easy or Medium. Other times, the game wants you to hold a steady tone when the recording has the singer scooping. It doesn't seem very consistent and it sometimes it seems like the more comfortable you are with your singing voice, the worse you'll actually do. A few of my friends and I, who are all musicians and can definitely sing in tune, were pretty frustrated by a few of the songs. The game has a very strange and sometimes finicky way of determining whether you are singing the right notes. Conversely, on Easy or Medium, you can just scoop random sounds up and down without any regards to the actual part and you'll do very well as long as your pitch matches the music for at least a split second. WEIRD.
Anyway, this game is the worst thing that has ever happened to me because my girlfriend plays it literally without interruption. She's smitten with the drumset, which makes it worse because I hear the constant CLACK-CLACK-STOMP-CLACK-STOMP-STOMP of her vigorous playing. Curiously, the guitar accessory is much more quiet than Guitar Hero's, so when she plays that instrument it isn't nearly as annoying as it was when she was obsessed with the original Guitar Hero. It gives me a chance to catch up on the stack of PC games I haven't been able to play (she previously had taken over my computer), but if I hear that stupid OK Go song one more time I am going to snap the game in two. Also, my friends Dustin and Alex have stopped being my friends and have become Kyrsten's friends because she invites them over to play Rock Band and drink until three AM and I'm the LOSER who won't play with them.
I hate these stupid BE A ROCKSTAR games because my girlfriend loves them so much and they've ruined all sorts of really good songs for me :( :( :(
I have been wanting to play this game so bad, but there is no way I will ever have it :(:(:(
I personally play both bass and drums (much better at bass, but whatever). I also play percussion in my band. The drums look like so much fun, and I have always been addicted to GH games, so I am sure I would enjoy the gjuitar and bass parts too. I doubt I would do much of the singing, but I'm sujre at some of the parties we have over here, it would get done.
Can anyone share with me the price and how to buy it?

I usually sing and play drums, or sing and play bass for the majority of the songs. Most of my friends don't like doing the singing. Although I can only barely scratch along on Hard for singing. Expert is ridiculously hard.
Rock Band has been confirmed for the Wii.
YES!

No real details yet on key things like DLC and full World Tour, but I have my fingers crossed. Since I don't own an xbox or ps3, this is awesome news. Rumor has it slated for an April-June release.

I hope they don't do something like make air drums using the Wii remote.
This game is awesome, but only if you have people to play it with. Practicing drums by yourself is o.k, but overall not worth getting (imo) unless you will have people to play it with a lot.

Say Whaaaaat
yes, the majority of your performance ability comes from training, but a natural affinity for identifying pitch frequencies and rhythm is quite real! Sing any note and I'll tell you what it is. :)
Played rockband a couple times, the guitar part is way easy after GH3, drums took some getting used to. Singing part is fun.

I guess you have people like Pavaroti who happened to have done everything right the first time they tried through dumb luck, and you have other people who are smarter or better at learning or whose reflexes are wired better and are thus destined to be better pianists. Those are exceptions, though, and I'd rather tell someone that music is a skill and not a gift because it's generally true. Even then, people with more potential still need training and practice, so we're back to where we started.
Also, just so you know, it's kind of an assinine thing to say NATURAL TALENT EXISTS BECAUSE LOOK I HAVE IT.
Oh jeez. It's like a knee-jerk reaction for you to flame me. ::) ::)
Just so you know, it's called absolute pitch, or more commonly known as perfect pitch. It's genetic. Relative pitch, the ability to identify pitches when given a base pitch, is not genetic. Both essentially lead to the same end.

I don't believe harm was talking about natural talent as much as he was about his natural ability to identify pitch. Which, as he said, is real.
As for the TALENT versus SKILL debate, just drop it. There are a million points and counterpoints on the subject and no one ever agrees, either because those who lack the skill say you must be gifted, or those who have a knack for it say anyone can learn how to paint/write music/whatever.

STOP BEING SUCH A JERK GOSH
Umm so yeah...
GH type games are kinda fun I guess. I play actual guitar and write my own music though, so I never really got the allure of "pretending" to play an instrument. I wouldn't ever buy one of these games, but it is kind of fun playing with other people. I've never tried Rock Band, though. I wanted it to try out the drums until it occured to me I could probably find an actual drum kit for the price of the whole game.
