IT'S SOMETHING I REALLY WANTED TO KNOW....

I object to your subtle implication that books cannot be fun!
Personally I find the best games have both unique/interesting mechanics and colorful characters. I think it is a disservice to your project to not try to have both.

If you ever want an RM game to stand out, it MUST have these three things: Killer maps, custom systems, and dialogue that is not headache-inducingly unrealistic (proper grammar goes a long way).

"Subtle Implication" = It's what my own brain came up with and not something actually said
I personally think books should be fun, but in practice they don't have to be.

Those hardly set a game apart from the several pretentious games you see most of the time.

Fuck, I make some damn pretentious games.

this is going under your avatar or my name isn't horatio x. geodude
I don't totally disagree! I'm not going to look at a game that doesn't have at least decent mapping and text that doesn't annoy me. Custom systems may not seem that big, but even Generica lets you create your own party and generate your own light to navigate dungeons.
So while "MUST" is not the best word, he's still close to the truth.

The only thing setting a normal game apart from a pretentious one is that not only a normal game actually gets finished, it also doesn't try too hard and simply is. Usually by not caring about whether or not people like it or not. Leave the gamer whoring to the big companies that actually sell things.

Well if the custom systems suck and the maps' 3 tile rule prevents you from going anywhere then his statement goes nowhere. I do think they add to the game if handled right but the way he words it doesn't hold much water and doesn't fully represents what makes a game STAND OUT. There are many games with pointless custom systems, there are many games with killer maps with nothing to do in them. Having 'realistic dialogue' is just something most games with good story have.
I guess the idea he's getting across is being confused by WHATS DIFFERENT and WHATS ACTUALLY GOOD. It's hard to say what exactly makes a game stand out because there are so many different things like: drama surrounding it, worst fucking game of all time, custom graphix!!!1!!, made in a different engine than RM, weird story, etc etc. I could go on. Some games might combine these aspects, some will only have one. It's a poor tip to say "it MUST have these exact 3 aspects" like you said.
Hey guys!
I just want to know what you people wanted in an RPG game, individually....
not comparing other posts....

ridakian: The topic leveled up.
Darken: I thought it was a given that these things have to be decent for a game to be decent, but okay.

Ridakian: He means that it's more interesting to discuss and debate each other's ideas for perceived game quality.
I think I'm going to shock the next person who says "3 Tile Rule" whether or not I agree with them because it oozes with artistic zealotry.
Oh! I see..........
Well, gud luck to all of you guys....
But please be sure to hit the question, I really need to poll the results!
