EnderX, have I got a game for you! It rhymes with Bero's Bealm. ;)

back on topic, I too liked the branching system in FFVI. But FFVI was an excellent game in many regards and taking ANY page from that book is probably a good idea.

i would like to play a gam called gero's gealm!!!!
Already working on it, Kentona. Planning to move ahead on chapter two some tonight. For me, it's a matter of available free time - DQIV being on a portable, it was a bit easier to find free time to deal with it than with something requiring a console or PC.

the part where Sabin, Edgar, Terra, Banon, and Locke are split up and you have to pick between which of the three parties you want to play as until all three were done, they met up somewhere, and the game continued?

Yeah that gives the story a lot more scope, not only for the duration of the split scenario but permanently. The audience has the opportunity to see different parts of the world, experience disparate plot threads, and allows for more individual character development. When your whole cast of 14 characters are all together it can be difficult to characterize or write material for all of them. It's a narrative tool that should be employed more frequently in RPGs.

If i'd read this a month ago, i would've accused you of speaking in riddles.

The only thing the bourgeois can oppress is a bag of fritos
Yes, my RPG in development does this but to a much greater extent. You are constantly switching among characters with intertwining storylines, picking up new characters, rejoining old characters, fighting your own characters from a different character's point of view. Only during climactic battles at the end of chapters do all party members manage to get together and fight a common enemy.

But this isn't treated as a gimmick, but simply what makes the most sense. When you think about it only in the video game RPG medium do the characters in the story stick together.

Take another medium, like the TV show Lost. How often is the main cast all together? Almost never. They are constantly moving about, meeting new characters, rejoining, fighting other characters, etc. Pretty much what happens in my game.

The reason RPG characters stick together is probably out of an illogical sense of tradition. That's how the old games always were so that's how the new games are. Throw away those shackles. It doesn't really make any sense and there is so much dramatic potential with splitting characters up.

Until To Arms! I never had a game with enough PCs to do this.

I plan on doing this in To Arms!

By the way, I meant to say thanks for this post, Ciel. It really encouraged me.

Ahahahahahah I have no idea what you are talking about

(read: I understand this concept far too much. Granted, I've managed to do it, but it takes a lot of balancing and putting ideas through in few words.)
