Xenocrap - I feel that way about any game full of self-important, useless symbolic BS, and the Xeno series is the worst offender in gaming.

Hardly! I'm not sure about Xenosaga, but most of the symbolism and references in Xenogears have a strong tie to its overall plot, theme, and message, and even the stuff that's just 'thrown in', like the names of several countries and towns being translations of Jewish holidays or whatever, by that logic, you might as well accuse pretty much almost every piece of fiction from Final Fantasy to god knows what else for using a religious/historical/gnostic/whatever name to name parts of their setting.[

Also, Craze will probably be able to defend/comment on Xenosaga better than I could.
mmm at least xenogears puts in the effort.
i'm tired of the softcore shit these days...and on that same note i need some sleep, im slowly degrading into an old man
Yasunori Mitsuda did the soundtracks for Xenogears and Xenosaga Episode 1, so I cannot ever hate them, even if I didn't already love them.
Mog - "Full of" is the key. The Xeno series' lifeblood is this kind of stuff.

For the record, Final Fantasy is a pretty self-important series too and I'm not a huge fan of it. The games I liked were 4 and 9. I'm not sure what I think of 3 and 5, and 10-2 and 12 were okay for me. I loved Lost Odyssey, though, for what it's worth.

But that's not a bad thing (I'm not saying you're saying it's objectively bad or anything but hey, it's conversation). The fact that Xenogears uses Gnostic influences to tell it's story doesn't adversely affect it's quality. It's not like Xenogears just 'threw in' ALL of its symbolism for the hell of it or just to sound cool. A grand majority of it is central to its entire theme and the story its trying to tell! And even the stuff in there that's not pertinent, like I said, most, if not almost all fiction, draws inspiration from religion, mythology, etc etc.

And I'm not sure what you mean by self important?

It's just a regular case of people repeating criticisms they heard on the internet in order to feel as if they are part of the majority and automatically validated. No Xeno product really has writing as shitty as Evangelion except Saga III, which is guilty of many things due to the storm of garbage the development team went through. Other than that, if you actually look at the story elements and presentation it's not difficult to see that everything is internally consistent and makes sense within the context of the plot. Unlike Eva, there is no point at which a giant alien creature explodes in the shape of a cross to in order to be incredibly deep. Xeno is basically just a crazy sci fi story that deals with stuff like human psychology, development of civilization, mysteries of the universe we live in, treatment of sentient beings etc etc. There are criticisms that can easily be levied against the series, but IT ISJUST LIKE EVANGELION LOOK AT ALL THESE SYMBOLS NONE OF EM MEAN ANYTHING is hardly one of them.

Ciel, you do know that the Xeno-games weren't on the SNES, right?
Huh? Where did he say he thought they were on the SNES? If you're referring to the 'Saga III" comment, he's referring to Xenosaga III, not Romancing Saga III or whatever.
I might have to look into Xenoblade, cause Xenogears was my favorite RPG on the PSX. I never did get to play the Xenosaga's though. I kinda ran out of time...in other words, found myself a wife and kids. They kinda put the gaming in the background, you know?
