2007 MISAOS

I'm even questioning the voting stuff. It's pretty much the exact same categories every year. Nominating extra categories might be a separated process.
I could see that working well.
Also WIP: I did that research into the 2007 Misao-nominated games. Some of the games are of questionable eligibility. When you get on I'll give you the list.

The problem with the sound design award is that it really falls under the category of atmosphere. And since it's often a very subtle thing (despite being important), it'll be hard for anyone to really remember a game that specifically had good sound design by the time the Misaos come around.
I really, really disagree. Atmosphere is a function of visuals, setting, and sound design. If you were going to discount the importance of sound design, then you might also just remove the categories for Best Writing as well as Best Graphics because those too contribute to atmosphere. While sound design may not seem important to you, to certain authors and certain players, it is extremely important and an area that some people invest a lot of spectator attention or creator effort into. If you are going to split hairs in other categories (such as separating Best Male Protagonist and Best Female Protagonist), I would encourage you to split hairs in regards to the things that please (or terrify) our ears.
If you want to whittle down categories, I would recommend you look at the categories that do not encourage individual talent. Best Musical Score, for example, is separate from Best Original Score -- in effect, with the first award you are recognizing one's ability to cherry-pick and plagiarize and giving the award equal weight as compared to an award to the hard-working amateur composer. Does it *really* matter that the author stole his music from an anime that has better music than his competitors that did the same thing? You certainly aren't recognizing authors who draw better maps with stolen tiles, afterall. This comment extends to Best Graphics vs. Best Original Graphics.

An idea I had last night and talking to Holb would just simplify a lot of things. Cutting out the entry nomination part. In the past this seemed to be used as a filter for joke entries. However, I think a purely popular vote is the best.
I like that idea. As for joke entries, wasn't there something to do with the Laxius power games that related to this?

It's okay to disagree.
My interpretation of the audiovisual Misaos is this:
Atmosphere (Best use of audiovisual components to create a fulfilling atmosphere)
Graphics (Best use of visual elements, such as sprites or chipsets, cohesiveness of style is also a factor)
Original Graphics (Best use of original visual elements, such as sprites or chipsets, cohesiveness of style is also a factor)
Original In-Game Art (Similar to Original Graphics, but specific to stuff life facesets, illustrations or the like)
Score (Best compilation and effective use of music, such as when picking the right music for a scene)
Original Score (Best original compilation and effective use of music, such as when picking the right music for a scene)
What would Sound Design be?
I've crossed off ones I thing we can do without, and put ??? next to ones I'd strongly consider and bolded ones I've added.

I dunno, I think best boss battle is a decent one to include. Or I could follow the trend nowadays and call it the Harmonic award. :P (no flames, I didn't release anything in 2007)
In all seriousness though, sometimes a boss battle can feel truly climactic/epic and be a great part of the fun of the game.

Best Battle is a good one.
You can't combine Best Non-RPG Maker Game and Best Non-RPG in RPG Maker. Two entirely different sets of games.

btw, Game voting is now open!
Okay, we keep Best Battle. And the separate awards for Non-RPG and Non-RPG made in a specific maker.

Can someone please supply a download link for Potato Chaos? Or Sunday, for that matter?
They're both nominated for Misaos but I can't find them anywhere.

I have noticed that a few of the games that aren't on here can be found on the gaming world site. Your best bet would be to look there.
Okay! The results have been posted.
Looks like Quintessence stole the show.
Some good showings by Master of the Wind and Alter A.I.L.A too.
Some good showings by Master of the Wind and Alter A.I.L.A too.
How did Quintessence win Sleeper Hit of the Year and also win most of the awards? Since the awards are driven through users, doesn't that make it a non-sleeper hit?
Anyway, not too bad.
Anyway, not too bad.
I'll edit this post with a link to my usual critique/commentary about this year's Misaos when I can figure out where I'm actually going to PUT it besides my LJ. :P
I just want to drop by and thank you guys for your work hosting this.
I am also very surprised how the rmxp.org community rose up in voting population this year, as opposed to the opposite phenomenons in the past years.
Anyhow, thanks again for your time and effort, and giving us some opportunity to share some light. This seems like quite a homey and friendly community as well, I might get settled myself here in the near future. :)
