MUSIC PROBLEMS

First off, I have Vista, so this could be entirely the fault of my operating system. I'd like to check, so...
For some reason, certain music files don't play correctly--all you hear are the background drumbeats. There's no real consistency I can see, but the same music files mess up every time, and its happened more than once so I don't think it's a problem with bugs or anything. All other music files work, including MIDIs. Does anyone know what's going on?

I have similar problems- except only with some MIDIs. It's really cost me a lot of good songs.
I too have Vista, but I can't think of anything in the OS (unless it's a bad kernel..?) that would cause this- it's more likely the type of audio cards that come with the computers that also come with Vista.
However, that's just my guess/assumption.

MIDIs are pretty shifty sometimes. The problem with them, is that it's completely hardware dependant. On my desktop, I have to turn the software synth on because the hardware MIDI gets stuck on notes randomly.
Do you know if you can adjust the MIDI synth on Vista? I was able to do it on Windows XP, but on Vista there doesn't really seem to be an option...
