ACTION 52 VX - 24 HOUR RPG MAKER THROWDOWN

Posts

If you were given 24 hours to make a game, what would you make?

Inspired by a terrible terrible game released on the NES called Action 52, this (unofficial) event is all about making a bunch of individual small games under a time restriction and combine them into one super catalog of games. Action 52 certainly feels like a bunch of games people made in 24 hours and slapped together, so why not see what we can do?

The goal: Spend ~24 hours on developing and testing a game! Any maker, any genre, anything you want as long as you make it quickly! This is about trying something new or different. Try making a short game, minigames, puzzles, a segment of a game, try a different engine (Check out RMN's engines page for a few ideas), try out scripts, or if you're Chaos, make an uber boss fight!
(It is also a near-perfect method of making a terrible game but that is besides the point! Right?)

-- THE LOGO --
We don't have one yet

-- The Real Rules --
- Must run on Windows. None of these wacky mythical Mac or Linux games mentioned in the darkest corners of the Internet
- You can only spend ~24 hours on a game. This is strictly code of honor but we will know if you spend too long on your game! (it will probably have more polish than the rest)
- You must submit your game on next Monday, February 22nd. On Tuesday (the 23rd) I'll collect all the games, put 'em in the front loader, and make a gamepage. You must include your game title, description, platform, how to run your game (if you use something other than RPG Maker), and a screenshot or I'll do it for you and I don't appreciate having to do extra work for that kind of stuff! Time spent would be handy too out of curiosity's sake but it isn't essential.
- Try to keep your file size down. This is a 24-hour game development event and everybody doesn't need another copy of the Kingdom Hearts OST (or whatever new snazzy game you kids are playing). Huge games will be arbitrarily cut down.
- The 24 hours is implementation and testing, which means you can sit on the john or in the shower thinking of what you want or brainstorming ideas. However when you open *insert your favorite engine here, like RPG Maker* and start making maps and filling up the database then that counts towards the 24-hour limit.

I was going to use post Epic Monster Dungeon Explore! 2, but I didn't. I still have to make my BQ4 entry due in like twenty seconds, so signing up for this would be really irresponsible of me!
My trial on VX ran out, and I can't afford to pay for it, otherwise I'd participate. Sounds like an interesting project.
when is this going off? if I could get my hands on my old harddrives (where vx is located) i think i'd like to participate.
I will sign up, for the good of mankind.
I think this will be fun. Finally a game I can write entirely in engrish.
This should be an RMN event! Contact WIP!
For everybody who doesn't want to sign up: RMVX is only required for the Super Game Catalog, you can still make a 24 hour game and submit it!

Writing this late at night shows its toll, got up this morning and I might have a solution for all the RMVX restrictions and allow anybody with any maker to become part of the Super Game Catalog: Use a frontend loader! This program is just a menu: Shows all the games that are in the catalog with a title, creator(s), brief description, and (hopefully) some screenshots. You choose a game, the frontend loader minimizes and it executes the game's .exe file. This is completely maker-independent and each game is its own entity so people can do anything they want. The only drawback is file size: It will be a bunch of games all with RGSS or Harmony.dll and .exe's.

I just need to make sure I can do it first. I know it's possible, I just have to figure out how.

Once I can confirm that the Super Game Catalog can be maker-independent, I'll contact WIP and maybe remake the topic. I'll update on this tonight or tomorrow, if it takes longer I'll stick with the original plan of the RMVX catalog.

For time, I think starting this weekend would work. By then I'll have everything sorted out for the Catalog and I can set up the base project for everybody. There's no start time for people who don't want to be in the Catalog though, so I think February 22nd would be a good end-time. It gives two weekends to make games instead of just one.

(If the frontend works, then I'll just make a end-date since a start time is irrelevant without a base project)
I made a frontloader once in Visual BASIC back in '98 in highschool. I used it to manage all the Red Alert mods me and my friend were making.
I'm looking at C# right now and it seems pretty simple. Make a process, point it to a file, start the process, minimize and wait until the process is done running, go back to the main menu.
that was pretty much it in VB. I think the command back then was Shell .exe location

So the point of this project is to make a compilation of intentionally bad games?

Only if you don't feel you can make a good game in twenty-four hours.
Ideally it's about making a variety of games and seeing what you can do in a short time span. It's just that making a variety of games and seeing what you can do in a short time span can be a recipe for failure and bad games!

Really its just about having fun and fucking around. Kinda like the 3 hour competitions (which can result in some interesting games!)
It shouldn't be that hard to make a crap game should it! And since it's apparently for any project sort of kind of then count me in! (unless it happens next week because I can't do next week)
