Like, right now-ish, while I still have the money from my tax return before it all goes to alcohol and other frivolous shit. However, I still want to save a lot of money buying one, so what's the cheapest way to obtain a working system?

Get the 360 Pro (60GB). The Elite (120?GB) is a waste of money since you get so little for the extra $50 or whatever and you can't install games (aka reduce loading times) with the Arcade since it has a whole 256MB of space and buying a new 360 Hard Drive is ridiculously expensive for what it is.
Check your local flier and maybe there will be a sale or combo deal. I wouldn't recommend getting one refurbished due to the chance of it being an older RRoD model and running out of warranty.

I'm selling an Xbox 360 on ebay pretty soon. I barely use(d) it since I do all of my gaming on the PC. IMO, if you're going for a system and you keep a capable gaming PC; the 360 is pretty much meaningless.
If you're interested, let me know. The only times I've used it was when GTA 4 came out, and briefly during my attempt to get back into fighting games with Street Fighter 4.

I'm a PC gamer too, but the big draw for 360 for me is: Street Fighter 4 (seriously, I live for fighting games, Live and the prospect of actually playing with my friends (who don't PC game), and finally, a console is just definitely more accessible for me. I'm getting tired of having to be all hunched up in the computer room to play a game. I love PC gaming, but I think I'll at least give a console a try.
Also, I'll check out your offer, NB. Let me know the details.

There have been a few games that I'm really glad I have the console for but it almost always ends up collecting dust in favor of my PC. I can't remember the last time I used it, it mainly gets played by houseguests now :p

Also I have an old "RRoD" series model and haven't had any of the problems that are supposed to be plaguing it, my understanding is it's not as prevalent as it seems.
I own a 360, but I don't get too much use out of it because it is a) downstairs and b) I have a good PC which I use instead.
It does get a lot of use when my friends come over, though, so if you have your bros hanging at your house a lot than it's definitely worth picking one up. There are lots of good games that work better with a controller, and sometimes I like to tear myself away from my PC to log some hours in a 360 RPG. It's definitely a better purchase than booze, at any rate.

I'm the oppposite of the general concensus here it seems. Having grown up with consoles and not a single computer, I prefer to do all my gaming on the consoles and in particular the Xbox 360 (unless its a PC, PS3, Wii exclusive).
My suggestion when looking at Xbox 360's, make sure they have an HDMI port. The older models like mine do not and it gives me a frowny face for my 52 inch LCD HDTV. Not that it looks bad, but it would be nice.

If you're getting one, make sure you get a jasper or something newer. Basically anything from mid 2008 and up is good. Anything older has a much much higher chance of the red rings. And since you want a cheap one, you'll be outta luck if it dies.
Ebay is good though. You can get them for a little over $100 and will work great. If you want a bigger hard drive(60gb or higher), then it might cost a little more. Those are really only good if you install games to your hard drive. The 20gb is enough for most people, but they don't sell them anymore so ebay/craigslist is the way to go.

I grew up mainly on consoles too, then gaming became a main stream shit fest.
If the manufacturing date is past late march of last year then you're pretty much good when it comes to the whole RROD shit. Since I don't live in America I can't really help you out with deals or whatever, but I would suggest going with an Elite because of the 120gig HDD that it has.

Everything seems better when you're growing up with it.
Why do people always say this. It's quite obvious gaming audiences have changed in the last couple of years.
Well slowly the line between consoles and PC are getting blurry, though, they will never merge I don't think. But this is damn close:
Ben Hack's Xbox 360 Mod:

If I could get my hands on one for this deployment it would be a sweet deal.

YEAH, nostalgia goggles: I mean who needs games with replay value and thought put into them when you can pay 60 dollars for an 8 hour interactive movie.
My 360 is from about 2006 (can that be true? I can't remember, it's old as fuck though) and recently I got 3 red lights on startup. Luckily, my brother's friend mods 360s so he just popped open the case, replaced the GPU (which was warped from overheating, solid technology there) and away we went. Now it works fine again, although I think the GPU might be running at a lower clock speed. Oh well!
