SUPER STREET FIGHTER 4 GETS A 3RD STRIKE

Posts

I know, it's awesome.

Dudley, Makoto, and Ibuki are coming to Super Street Fighter 4. Did anyone just jizz their pants? lol
Anyway, even though I don't have a 360 to play it on, I'm going to try and see if my friend will let me hang and play it at his place.

What are your thoughts on this revelation?
I literally almost cried.

I am not kidding, being facetiousness, or am trying to use hyperbole or anything.
My thoughts are...this is still basically the same game as the original SFII and I am not at all interested.
I see Street Fighter still being given iteration after iteration and think "where's my super duper Killer Instinct revamp already, fuck you Rare, fuck you to death"
I had the original Street Fighter IV for a while. Beat the Arcade mode a couple of times, unlocked literally two new characters, got my arse handed to me online by either cheap bastards or people who have not seen sunlight for the past 10 years or so from playing Street Fighter games in their basement.

I quickly traded it in. I prefer Soul Calibur and the Dragon Ball beat em ups these days. (I just know I'm gonna get yelled at for saying Dragon Ball > Street Fighter)

GET OUT

But seriously, that's why Street Fighter was and still is successful. Instead of changing wildly from the original formula that's gotten them success for about 20 years, they just keep the same base model and improve on it with each new game. Mario, and a slew of other games do the same thing.

Oh come on, that's just sore loser-itis. "EVERYONE WHO BEATS ME IS CHEAP/A LOSER".
I tried to get back into fighting games. I really did. I have fond memories of curb stomping businessman in X-men Vs. Streetfighter after school, and beating my fellow 3rd graders at the arcade; but I just could not get into it. Hours upon hours of practice, still being unable to pull off the basic combos I wanted, practice online impossible with arrogant douche bags not playing to their fullest, and the music... God damn the fucking music. The music was the final nail for me, as trivial as that might sound.

Every time I heard that title screen music my stomach turned, the stage themes were pretty terrible too. The only good tracks in the game are the remixs of the classic tunes.
I got pretty high in championship mode on SF4. But that doesn't really equate to my skill...people who were terrible at the game would be high rank simply because they played for way too many hours. I hope they fixed the netcode. That's the only thing I would like fixed now.

Oh yeah, I remember going to the arcade too on weekends with my older brothers. I was ten years old facing guys twice my age. I never won many games in MvC, but I was okay at X-men vs. Streetfighter. I wish there were arcades where I live now. =(
I've watched the trailer like 30 times. Having the 3rd strike announcer at the start was brilliant.

Scrub. As my man Guile would say, "Go home and be a family man."

Sir Dudley sealed the deal for me. If you've been following this game, there was a "rumour list" released a a while ago revealing all the new characters. I was skeptical at first, but when they released Juri everything fell into place.

IN-DE-STRUCTIBLE. Everyone has a character theme remix now for their stages so that's a plus.
Can somebody explain how these "3rd Strikes" work? Do they release a Street Fighter game and then release... the same game with new characters over and over? I am not saying this is a bad thing, I am just confused.

seconded.

EDIT:

Maybe it's a baseball game? Kinda like how Mario took over kart racing and soccer and whatnot.

No no no sillies - first they release a game. Then, they release THAT game AGAIN, but with a few new characters AND some tweaks to the gameplay to remove bugs - and call it SUPER. BUT some people think they ruined the game, and a big flame war happens and people take sides. They may then release that second game somewhere else, like the arcade, and call it SUPER ALPHA

THEN, they release that ALPHA game on the original system, call it 3rd Strike, add a few more characters to piss the arcade crowd off, and incorporate the original rules as well as the arcade rules to spark more flame wars about which rules are "real".

They may go as far as a fourth, but that is invariably ignored by everyone except collectors.

The Street Fighter series is too hard. I always found the controls to be clunky, too (up to jump? diagonal ups to jump forward? that's just damn lame). I tried SF2 a while back and couldn't get past the 1st round.

EDIT: meaning, I'll take a few useful moves that are simple to use and quick to come out, but when to use them is hard to master.

EDIT EDIT: apparently I fail at forums

Wow. Can't tell if you're being serious or not but that's how you jump in almost every 2D fighter ever.

Same for me. Smash Bros before shotos.

(pats Feld on the back) it's okay, buddy. You can let it all out...because, seriously, this is awesome.

It's almost surreal, really. Since I've barely touched 3rd strike in my entire life, the addition of these 3 characters are like the fusion of two different worlds that convulse and writhe around, but suddenly stops and rises to its feet as pure awesomeness.

Makoto is the cool one, btw.

Every single fighter (all 2 or so of them) that requires a non diagonal button to jump is extremely clunky and counter intuitive. Try doing fast paced combos and aerial moves with a 'jump with A' button.

Basically, there are different series of Street Fighter games.

As everyone knows and jokes about, there are quite a few versions of Street Fighter II, such as Super Street Fighter 2 and all that business.

There's also Street Fighter Alpha, Alpha 2, Alpha 3, and so on.

There are also a few versions of Street Fighter III, such as 2nd Impact and 3rd Strike.

Put simply, the Street Fighter II, Street Fighter Alpha, and Street Fighter III 'series' play very differently from another and are true sequels in most senses of the word. However, the difference between games in an individual 'series', like Street Fighter III: 2nd Impact and Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike are more along the lines of 'updates' rather than true sequels, with stuff like new characters, balance issues fixed, gameplay tweaks, bugfixes, etc etc.

The main reason they do this, besides money I guess, is to keep the individual games in a certain 'series' tournament viable and updated. The tournament scene in fighting games is HUGE and very serious, and they're usually deconstructed down to the bone. It's very common for fans to find out everything there is to know about a fighting game in a matter of weeks of its release.

In other words, they're sort of like the precursors to DLC.
