HARD PARTS OF GAME MAKING?
Posts
Just a simple question. What do you people think is a hard part in designing a game.
For me, it would have to be designing the perfect map. I love designing maps but it can frustrate me if i don't get it right.
So what do you find hard in designing a game?

To me, motivation isn't the trouble. Finding the free time is the hard part. I hardly ever have a chance to work on my game as of late...
It varies. Creating cutsences, original puzzles, and aesthetically pleasing maps can be troublesome for me, along with the need to somehow conceive worthwhile RM2k3 DBS battles. x_x
More than anything, it can sometimes just be my lack of organization that's problematic, though. I'll often open the editor ready to work, stare at the screen blankly for a few moments, and decide I don't know exactly what I should do with it next.

Free time. I'd love to work on the game as much as I can, but then with 2 jobs + university, I can't always find the time for it. Especially since I want to graduate soon, hopefully this semester.
Otherwise, everything is either easy or tedious, or just requires a good bit of working at it. There are times when I'll be stumped in the coding part (Especially in the DBS since I don't use it often), but then I'll just ask someone to help.

Maps.
(I'd say "Graphics," because I have no skill, but what I can do, I find fun. Maps, however...)
Yeah, really, more than anything else, it's the maps.

Probably designing maps and enviorments (towns and the world map are the hardest for me) and creating 100% custom sprites. I can't make custom sprites, simply put. 'nuff said.
hmmm that's a good question
Im trying to draw all the graphic's for my game
Character's 30%
Panoramas 40%
Fogs 10%
Item's ect 20%
making them work together has to be the hardest thing
p.s nice topic ;)

Programming.
I'm good at coming up with stories, characters, and systems, but when it comes to actually implementing it all...well, I need to work at that. Maybe I should give up RPG Maker and write novels instead...

Motivation- I have more free time than I know what do with, seeing as how I close to never sleep, and rarely do my homework.
....And don't anybody suggest I do those things- it ain't gonna happen. :p
Second though, I would say dialog is my weakest thing. All my characters sound the same.
And if I were forced to compose, that. My mom's a music teacher, but I can't compose my way out of a paper bag.

Another thing for me would be the lack of time i have. As i am a manager at a restaurant i not only have to work full 5 days a week but complete reports and such as well. And after all that is till manage to find a little time to work on my game.
Making interesting maps. I've stopped working on Demons Gate because I used up all of my good map ideas and that I've lost the energy to make any others. Part of the problem might be that I make my maps too big, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I'm even worse with places like towns...
(back for Rm2k(3)) Coding: Coding with the RM2k(3) event commands is painful and its like a step up from Assembly. I never want to use something like that ever again. Finding simple errors in some of my Rm2k(3) code would've been much easier with a real programming language, and that extends to making it in the first place and modifying it.
Programming for RMXP is a challange (for different reasons), but that's hardly due to accidential complexity and its nothing I can't work out.
Writing: I'm painfully slow when it comes to getting the plot and characters done. I've had a fair sized gap in my story for some time now that I'm 'Thinking' about without ever really getting anything done. I've scrapped several parts of the story and characters and its going to be hard to get the game started when I keep rewriting/scrapping everything :\
I know you ask for a hard part, but I can't choose when it comes to these sort of things ;D

Mapping : I have trouble making non syjmetrical maps at certain tijmes. I also just don't find the creativity sometimes, I don't know why.
Motivation : I too usually have lots of time on my hands, but I always go to do something else on my computer, so I can never focus on my RPG.

Finishing.
The part when you're game is playable and even completable but still has some strange bugs here and there and some features that need tweaking to make the game... A bit more playable.
You've sat there for ages and "yeah, the game is done" but then you find all the bugs, spelling errors and other minor things that just need fixing and it takes so much longer than you anticipated. You have a completed game on your hands but you can't release it properly until all that stuff is done.
Man. It is the hardest part. Of course getting there isn't easy either, but the fact is that giving up when you're so close to the finishing line is probably the worst thing ever.

Motivation, graphics are the hardest parts to game making, but it really depends on what program your using, because Game maker and such would be Coding, RmXP would be Scripting, etc
Motivation: Sticking to the project at hand and ignoring my muse whispering greater, better, grander ideas. I have a hard time keeping to any one project and will often start 'side-projects' that eventually take over... only to think of another 'small' idea that takes over... a never ending cycle for me, it seems. <sigh>

That would be the hardest for most people. Checking for errors and bugs etc would have to be the boringest part in making a game.
Fun:
-Music
-Battle Chars
-Facesets
-Storyline
-Progression/Systems
-Item/skill database work
Not Fun:
-Mapping
-Chipsets
-Animations
-Charsets
Roadblocks:
-Thinking of new ideas that conflict with already completed stuff
-Losing momentum
-Suddenly realizing something sucks

Switch the positions of mapping and skill/item databse work and I would agree wholeheartedly.
