"Young Merlin" for SNES.
The game is rather entertaining, but I hate those cart mazes.
The final Dungeon is a giant cart maze...and I finally throw the gamepad away with exasperation, and never came back to the game.
Shame on me.

I beat silver surfer, but I'll admit I save-stated near the last level :x
Probably the hardest and most skill worthy: Ikaruga.
Godamn fucking silver surfer. That game was almost literally IMPOSSIBLE.
Galactic power = killed in one hit by a goddamn fish!

Lol I failed so hard at that boss until I decided to analyze the hints. Then came along Vargas and my inability to do blitz commands correctly....
try beating any SNK fighting game on the hardest difficulty!

I could never get past the third level. The first level was effin retarded hard.

Yeah this game was rapey, even co-op. I don't think I ever beat it either
LOL, I remember maximum carnage. Think I used game genie to beat that. Sega had quite a few over-the-top difficult games.
It was a SNES game though. (It could have come out for Genesis, I don't know, I never had a genesis.)
Anyway I got stuck around the same spot in Maximum Carnage (like Statue of Liberty or Central Park 2). Ultimately just an unwinnable battle of attrition where you eventually get ground down and run out of lives/continues.
