Hey guys, figured I'd show you some more of my artwork and get some feedback. Apologies fi I've shown you one or two of these before.

This is Brose, a character I've designed as an antagonist for a series I've been batting around in my head for a while now. He's an arrogant general who lets his power go to his head and commonly oversteps his boundaries. He believes that his power is absolute and that his ideals are not up for discussion - if he tells you to do something, especially in a very particular way, you had damned well better listen!

This is a favourite of mine. It's a robot head I drew for a character design section of my course. It looks like it'd belong in a Star Wars film though.

Here we have Renatus. Renatus has the power to warp reality and can make the entire planet start afresh with a clean slate. After renewing the Earth several times he realises that humanity is always the reason that the Earth decays and winds up in such a bad state that it needs a new beginning, so he decides that instead of renewing the Earth this time, he shall simply wipe out humanity instead.

This is a little older. It's a mech I drew, again, for my course. Designed only for offense purposes, he has a drill on one arm and a gattling gun on the other.

Another robot design. This one looked cool but I felt it wouldn't be practical.

The robot's head in colour =O

Yes more robots! XD One of few full body shots I did for this character.

I've started working on an orthographic drawing of the final design for the robot to make a 3D model. I just need to add arms and a side view.
Now for some fan arts

Vegeta, prince of Saiyans, looking cocky as always.

Sonic's nemesis, Robotnik in his classic costume.

Son Goku, battle damaged, in his gi from Namek.

Vegeta again, I'm a bit of a DBZ fan...
Like I said, I'd love to hear your thoughts and if you wanna see more from me, or have any requests, just let me know.

The drill digger is pretty snazzy. I like it.
But...
This might sound a bit strange coming from me, seeing as how most of the drawings I post at RMN are women in sexy poses, but I think you really need to get out of your comfort zone. Almost all of these are straight-on shots from knee/waist up.
Also, the DBZ influence is really way too obvious. I am not saying this just because I dislike DBZ (I do), but when I see your original characters they just look so much like DBZ characters. It's not a good thing to have people thinking of Toriyama's art style when you should be trying to establish your own identity as an artist. The only thing people can do is to compare your art to an extremely skilled, experienced and well-established artist who has been responsible for several hugely popular franchises.
Do you get what I mean?

True, I do need to get out of my comfort zone. It would probably help if I started drawing more women too. Thanks for the feedback, I'll definately work on it =)
In Sam's defence, I believe that although his art is in DBZ's footsteps (minus the robots), I hear it's a good place to start by mimicking an art style you like best and go from there. Which, in my opinion, he did quite well. Plus the robots look pretty sweet (I also like the "damage" on the bots, nice touch).
Agree with Mortifere
When I first started, I tried to mimic the style used for Square Enix's games. but Karsuman is also right. You have to develop your own style so that, if someone sees your art, they'll say "Hey! That's Sam!" instead of "Hey! It's a DBZ fanboy!" (Wasn't being offensive by this, but I have seen people say this. You catch my drift, right?)

Agreed AABattery. You use "mimic style" as a stepping stone. But man does it help with learning how to draw forms and draw correctly. It also helps train the "artistic eye", that is, drawing what's there and not symbols. But, I can't draw worth a crap so that's just my guess ;)
No offense Mortifere, but I think Sam's passed the point where arbitrary, generic artistic advice is helpful.
I think there's truth to the fct that I used Akira Toriyama's and Richard Elson's (anyone who can correctly tell me who Richard Elson is gets a HUGE cookie) styles as a basis for my own, but it's also true that I need to branch out further and develop that style into something that's more my own as well as drawing stuff from outside my comfort zone.
That said, here's an energetic young woman in an awkward fighting pose. The foreshortening's not quite there and the arm just looks a bit off and weird to me. Literally drawn about five minutes ago.
EDIT: Looking at her again, I think I've been reading too much Negima... Damn you Ken Akamatsu!

Shouldn't've posted that, now we're going to have to demand some more Still Life.

Actually, my aim wasn't to provide any advice at all but to just give a different point of view of Sam's posted artwork. My comments were more geared towards the other comments made as well as complimenting his ability to mimic other already implemented art styles, which is more than I can say for myself. But all in all, no offense taken ^_^.
it's very hard to just say that you'll start drawing something that's 'more your own,' it takes years to develop a unique style.
You could tell any artist to 'branch out,' more and it would be acceptable advice, and while i'm not refuting it(it's always a good thing), i think over time, if you just continue drawing what you like to draw, no matter what form, it will eventually become your own and you will improve.
So um basically, keep up the good work! It can only get better :) liking the robots by the way

Why do you draw the eyes as if they're on top of a rounded surface rather than in their sockets?
I like your robots but not so much anything else...I really hate DBZ. I also do not have the trade-knowledge of everyone else here offering artistic advice.

And so the postcount rises :D
Anyways, most of this is great. although I'm in the same boat as Max here. Karsu has already stated that generic advice isn't going to matter to you (let's face it, your work is pretty damn good) so I won't bother leaving any.
@Chaos: Oh man, Still Life, that's going back a bit. I do have plans to do a comic soon, but I'm debating between a couple of ideas. Rebooting Still Life is one of them, another is called A Traitor's Reasons and would be relatively short, or I was considering a comic adaption of either Four Sided Triangle or Fenrir. It'd be good practice as I'd be forced to draw stuff from outside my comfort zone.
@Booble: Thanks. Robots make more logical sense to me when I draw them. My brain can handle robotic joints and general machinery a lot better than it understands the human muscle system. It kind of goes "The bicep changes shape when the lower arm moves? That's insane!" XD
@DudeSoft: I think it's because when I was a kid I drew a lot of really cartoony stuff, like Mickey Mouse, Sonic the Hedgehog, Mario etc, where the eyes were popping out of the head. Now they're laying flat on it as I creep away from old habits, and I'm guessing eventually they'll sink into sockets.
@ Max: That's fair enough. It's safe to say you're not alone in that opinion, one of my tutors I used to have absolutely hated anything that resembled comics - British, American or Japanese, my current tutors and course leader however, love that stuff.
@Myers: Thanks, I'm glad you think I'm at that point =)

Sam, mind if I try inking that big ass robot with the drill arm for practice?

^ Samples of some of my inking assignments. I'm just starting out.

Go for it, be good to see how it looks =)
Got some new stuff here that I did this morning:
This is your typical seduce then kill magic user. I quite like how the arm closest to us turned out. Still trying women and poses to break a couple of habits.
That said...
This is more of the same XD
And this... I just couldn't resist.
