Now that we're into March and the Oscar the Grouches are around the corner, what were your favorite films of 2009? What were your least favorite? Why? Are there any movies you'd still like to see, or any movies you'd recommend to avoid?
TOP 10:
10. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
9. Sherlock Holmes
8. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
7. The Invention of Lying
6. Zombieland
5. District 9
4. Star Trek
3. Up
2. Monsters vs Aliens
1. Watchmen
I watched these movies and they weren't very good:
Knowing
Crank: High Voltage
Couples Retreat
I still want to watch:
2012
The International (got it for xmas)
Angels & Demons
Public Enemies
The Informant!
Surrogates
Astro Boy
The Men Who Stare at Goats
Ninja Assassin
From my list of 2008 movies I had wanted to see:
10,000 BC -- still haven't watched
The Happening -- watched. It was pretty lame.
Hamlet 2 -- still haven't watched, but probably won't bother
Eagle Eye -- watched. it wasn't that great.
Bolt -- watched. It was okay, a little to kiddish.
Bedtime Stories -- watched. It was okay.
Revolutionary Road -- still haven't watched, completely forgot about it.
I've also watched (and they were pretty good)(in order from most favorite, to least favorite):
The Hangover
Taken
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
Avatar
X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Push
Law Abiding Citizen
Terminator Salvation
The Proposal
17 Again (it wasn't as bad as I expected!)
The Taking of Pelham 123
Inglourious Basterds
What about you?
I've only seen...four movies from that list. Goddamn. From worst to best:
4. Avatar (2D mind you)
3. 2012 (boom boom bang bang)
2. Harry Potty (because it's harry potty)
1. District 9 (kill all prawns)
4. Avatar (2D mind you)
3. 2012 (boom boom bang bang)
2. Harry Potty (because it's harry potty)
1. District 9 (kill all prawns)
Lessee -
I watched:
Taken - nice watch, gets your heart pumpin.
Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li - and suddenly magic balls, everywhere!
Watchmen - fantastic. I prefer watching this to the graphic novel. makes more sense.
Knowing - Great, loved it. The inevitability of it was amazing.
Monsters vs. Aliens - Great use of 3D, I generally liked it.
Dragonball Evolution - it was alright - mostly dissapointing because Lord Piccollo was like barely in it.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine - They gave us what we wanted, we just didn't realise we asked for so little.
Star Trek - fantastic bust buy. I hope they make more movies in this vein.
Angels & Demons - you can tell this was written before his more famous work.
Terminator Salvation - Dissapointing. Did absolutely NOTHING to further the plot of Terminator.
Up - Great, tear jerker.
The Hangover - Fantasitcally HIlarious in the best ways.
The Taking of Pelham 123 - meh.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - negative meh. Black Stereotype robots ruined this movie for me. Megan Fox annoyed me because I'm getting really tired of cardboard eye candy in movies. The whole thing just looked like a tired listing off of "awesome" things to happen.
Public Enemies - I wasn't a fan. Anyone who didn't see that ending is an idiot and bad at history.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - standard really. If you liked the previous movies you're bound to watch this one.
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra - I enjoyed it for what it offered. Not a great movie, but nice to watch.
District 9 - One of the Greatest Sci-Fi movies I've ever seen.
Inglourious Basterds - Classic Tarantino. I wish WWII ended this way.
Gamer - Great movie that didn't get the attention it deserved. Simmilar to Surrogates. Great Villain.
9 - alright, but not Burton's Best.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs - Alright, funny. No real classic villain. I miss songs. Hero's a little TOO lame sometimes.
Surrogates - I really likes this, especially for the ending.
Zombieland - HIlarious. + bill murray for the win.
Law Abiding Citizen - Really fun to watch. you're rooting for the bad guy the whole time.
Astro Boy - Loved it. I really like how they didn't pull any punches. EVERYONE IS A VILLAIN!
The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day - if you liked the first, you're going to this one. can be confusing without watching the first.
Fantastic Mr. Fox - my first wes craven film. I enjoyed it enough.
Ninja Assassin - not enough ninja action. too much supernatural.
Avatar - It's pretty good for an aesop film, but it's not that impressive. I'll probably buy it.
Sherlock Holmes - This movie really ortrayed ACD's vision of the characters well. and they made it all actiony to boot. It's the greatest marriage of two worlds. super fun watch.
I wanted to see these, but didn't get around to it:
Coraline
(500) Days of Summer (maybe)
The Invention of Lying
Where the Wild Things Are
The Men Who Stare at Goats
The Princess and the Frog
Up in the Air (was that this year, or last year?)

I don't think i even watched ten films but uh
Moon - excellent scifi although a bit PLOTTWISTY
Zombieland - idk it didnt do a whole lot for me, it felt a little uh PRECIOUS in a lot of ways. bill murray owns though
Inglourious Bastards - pretty good i guss but self-indulgent maybe?? i mean the whole concept is self-indulgent but i have mixed feelings about tarantino anyway so. it was ok i guess.
Those two Mesrine movies - i liked them a lot!! although the second one kind of lost focus imo and why are they two films anyway?? stop taking my money guys.
Sherlock Holmes - it was definitely GUY RITCHIES SHERLOCK HOLMES and i wish downey jr would branch out more but it was pretty entertaining i thought.
In The Loop - hell yeah!!!! this was really funny i thought.
A Serious Man - loved it, film of 2009 imo (not that i have many reference points but you know)
Drag Me To Hell - i liked this a heck of a lot!!
i really wanted to watch Bad Lieutenant - Port Of Call too becuse it looks fucking insane but alas.......
Moon - excellent scifi although a bit PLOTTWISTY
Zombieland - idk it didnt do a whole lot for me, it felt a little uh PRECIOUS in a lot of ways. bill murray owns though

Wow somehow I keep blocking out those two retarded robots. Like, it's a nice nod to mentally challenged people to include two utter retards in the movie, but man, did it undermine the film. Strangely, though, whenever I think about Transformers 2, they never come to mind. It's like my mind has blanked them out (kinda like how the mind can blank out things that are too painful to handle). I remember rooting for Devastator when he fought the retard twins.
But now that I am reminded of them again I may have to revise my list.
I'm almost positive I heard one of those damn robots either talk about watermelon of fried chicken. I was like, Are you fucking serious? Am I supposed to laugh?

Drag Me To Hell - i liked this a heck of a lot!!
Whoops completely forgot about this. Probably no. 2 on my list.
I didn't fully understand if that movie was a horror or a comedy.
I will only have movies I saw in 2009 and that was released in 2009. This, for me excludes the masterpiece that is Zombieland (released in January 2010 over here), Sherlock Holmes (saw it yesterday) and The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus (didn't see it until 2010). Three movies I really enjoy but won't make either my 2009 or 2010 lists because they were released in the wrong time.
With that said.
5. Watchmen
Watchmen blew my mind. It's such a pretty movie and I didn't mind the otherwise slow pace I was just staring with awe the whole time. It's the only movie I saw twice in the theatres in 2009. Which is quite the accomplishment.
2. The Brothers Bloom
The Brothers Bloom was quite hyped all around the internet. Especially on the movie podcasts I listened to. And the director seemed like such a cool guy that I just had to go watch this. I enjoyed it a lot. Colourful and weird yet straightforward. This was the only movie soundtrack I bought in 2009. In fact I had to have it so much that I bought something on iTunes for the first time since the soundtrack wasn't available on CD.
3. Moon
I heard a lot about this movie about how brilliant it was and saw it on the DVD-shelf (since it never got a theatrical release here apart from that one screening at a festival) and bought it. Even though I had heard a lot about this movie it wasn't at all what I expected. Which was really awesome.
1. Inglorious Basterds
Tarantino does a eurothriller set in WW2... I loved every minute. I would have gone to see this twice but I just didn't happen. Still... If only Tarantino's DVD releases had more fun stuff in them I'd buy this.
6. District 9
The style was neat. The concept was neat. The execution was neat. And despite what people say I loved the final act.
8. Coraline
This was the first movie I ever saw in 3d. It was cool for a while but walking out of it I thought "3d is not for me". Avatar had cool 3d too but I had more or less the same reaction. If I can help it I'll stay away from 3d in the future. The movie itself is wonderful though.
4. Le Concert
This is probably a slightly artsy pick that I went and saw because I saw the trailer and thought "crap, this looks like The Full Monty with a Russian orchestra. I must see this."
It was exactly that. Though not quite at all. But a very nostalgic and beautiful movie that had me crying over the whole final sequence (if you don't cry there you're not human).
7. The Boat that Rocked
A fun ride. A great ensemble story that perhaps could have had more stuff from different characters but the film was long already. Though I could have lived with a miniseries. I just loved "being there".
9. The Road
Dark, depressing. But goodlooking no doubt.
10. Avatar
It was an awesome ride and I can't really come up with what else to put here.
(can you tell I numbered after writing them down? :)
Disappointments:
9
The trailer looked cool. But the voice acting just felt off and the story-wise it wasn't exciting at all. Too bad because the visuals were cool but it's not always enough.
Horrible things stay away:
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
It took me three months to get through this.
Angels & Demons
Makes no sense at all. In all ways imaginable. If there ever was a waste of time this would be it.
New Moon
Alright I haven't seen it but it's fucking Twilight. Stay away! (doesn't mean I won't see it eventually though :)
Incredibly fun but instantly forgettable:
2012
First they driva away from an earthquake. Then they jump on a small plane to escape an earthquake. Then they escape a volcano in an RV. Then they flee a tsunami in a slightly bigger plane. HOLY SHIT THIS IS SO MANY MAGNITUDES OF AWESOME I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE.
G.I. Joe Rise of Cobra
I know nothing about GI Joe. Since I'm not North American. Still this was sweet action.
Drag me to Hell
A lot of fun.
Notable stuff I haven't seen yet:
Paranormal Activity
Crank: High Voltage
The Hurt Locker
Where the Wild Things Are
Antichrist
A Serious Man
Also UP would probably have made my list but I saw it on DVD in 2010.
EDIT:
And because I'm a nerd I just checked my District 9 ticket (because I keep those... For some reason) and I saw it on 9.9.09 :D
With that said.

EDIT:
post=126442Burton only produced 9. (funny how there were three 9 movies last year. Disctrict 9, 9 and Nine)
9 - alright, but not Burton's Best.
And because I'm a nerd I just checked my District 9 ticket (because I keep those... For some reason) and I saw it on 9.9.09 :D
Possible spoilers...
I didn't watch many movies this year, but here are my top 3:
1. Inglorious Basterds - Really awesome, lots of mind games. I was disappointed that it wasn't really focusing on the basterds as they were very interesting characters. I can understand why people might not like it because they went in expecting some WW2 action flick (as I did), but I'm a huge fan of clever psychological espionage shit so it was great for me. (Also did anyone notice the homage to TGTBTU in the intro? It was really enjoyable)
2. District 9 - Great film, mainly because it reminded me of Half Life 1+2 on so many levels. I liked the documentary approach to the beginning but I think it was a good idea they switched to a normal movie perspective.
3. UP - Best animated film I've seen in awhile. Near the end it follows the typical pixar formula (Good guy/role model turns evil). But it was a really well executed film that took advantage of being visual medium.
Movies that were disappointing or just plain sucked:
Zombieland - Starts out fun with loads of internet zombie humor, but doesn't really escalate further. Usually most zombie flicks follow the pattern of the ending being very hopeless and chaotic. But in this movie the cowboy guy just stupidly traps himself in a ticket booth thing with just two hand guns, I thought he was a goner! But um, I guess they just ran out of zombies or something... I think this could have been better if this was some kind of TV show where the characters actually have goals/motives and more time to develop (not a fucking LETS GO TO SOME THEME PARK FOR NO REASON BUT MAKE A STUPID MISTAKE EVEN THOUGH WERE ARE APPARENTLY CLEVER CON WOMEN). OR Bill Murray should have originally been a zombie and killed the main characters and the movie would just be about him.
tldr edit: Shaun of the Dead was better
Avatar - US marines that have a british imperialism mindset try to attack a perfect race of people who act exactly like native americans and have native american weaponry and ride things that resemble horses (native americans rode on horses!) of course they also rode on dinosaurs and stuff but my point is they didn't really try to stray away from the Pocahontas formula too much. I guess everyone knows about the DANCES WITH WOLVES IN SPACE point so I won't go further with that. Avatar could have been better if the handicapped main character was addicted to being a navi and clowning around in pandora but never gets to stay on pandora forever. He also never fully understands how the navi people's minds work. Then the humans win and the main character dies in his avatar body from trying to help the navi people he never fully understood (or perhaps the humans lose and he's stuck in his handicapped body forever). BUTTTTT instead they had to make a lot of money by doing a typical plot and make the tree's magical powers able to rid of having a handicapped body and thus everyone lives happily ever after until the sequel.
Angels & Demons Really fucking stupid.
Drag Me To Hell I rented this, don't think it was bad, I just didn't really like the general plot. Good scares and execution, but not my type of movie.

DarkenNot until the Imperialistic Portuguese and Spanish brought them for the Natives to enjoy (as they hunted their hoses to extinction ages ago)
(native americans rode on horses!)
