ARE YOU INTERESTED IN HAVING A RELEASE? (SOMETHING)
Posts
I'm a bigger fan of competitions than a *dump gams here* type of thing, because unlike the latter they actually manage to get me motivated to make something. May not be the case for everyone but hey, just throwing out ideas. ;(
I liked Release Something because it made me kick my ass to do work till school got in the way :(
I don't like competitions too much lately because it means another project, another probably cancelled one DX

I refuse to sign up for Release Somethings (so I usually never participate) and I don't like the idea of making it just a "dump what you have" event, since I'd rather play stuff that is polished and prepared for a release.
Also I am hoping to start a podcast as I talked about in IRC although it would not be about RS at all.

I like this idea because it would give those of us who are a looong way off from a polished release a chance to at least put something out there to be seen. Others who do not see the motivational potential in an activity like this still have the option to not participate and not look at the results. I don't really see what they have to gain from shooting it down (not to say that anyone has attempted to do so thus far but that there's really no reason not to go ahead with it if someone's willing to organize it)
people are very vocal about things they don't agree with, and it can be very demoralizing to people who organize such events!
...hypothetically speaking.

I may be interested in doing this with you! Let me know if you need any help handling this.
Personally, I do like the idea of release something, but it could still use improvements. I think it's a good idea to have segregated releases, where X number of people sign up for each day. Though, I think it might be better if these releases were separated by a longer period of time (like, one group of releases per week).

serves you right for asking if people wanted it or not :p

OT but yeah I still pledge my loyalty to this
post=127638This would be the 10th time round for RSD. You weren't here during the lean days.... *looks across the dust bowl that was once his farm from his rickety front porch*post=127636serves you right for asking if people wanted it or not :p

EDIT:
And you should see the flak in the Staff forums!
So around when would this be? I am interested and I support the idea but I have no idea when I'll be able to participate.
I do have a game I'm secretly working on that's pretty much completely battle based. I also have all the skills and battle system worked out but haven't made an inch of progress when it comes to the actually areas. So would setting up a gauntlet like in the Arian Wild battle demo be fine? If so then I would be up to releasing what I have hidden away.
I'm not sure what I'd do if it was a theme we'd have to make from scratch though.

I love the release something days... but ya know, you do raise a good point about certain games being overlooked. It really isn't fair to those people who not only worked their asses off to get their game done in time, but had to compete with well known game makers and sequel projects. It's a tough call
I liked the RS!Days as well, but they should probably only appear once a year or so - as a way to have a day devoted to saying "Here's what I got so far, check it out, give some feedback etc.' Without a full release or what not. Or maybe have a bug test day or something for those projects that are in the early-mid stages.
I was actually thinking about having a small ongoing 24-hour series where it's not just focussed on games. Like one could be create a chipset in 24 hours, another could be devoted to making a map for your game, another to music making, another to character creation (written) or backstory, another to monster creation and so forth - just to get people working on their games, but also sharing a bit about them whilst at it. Aimed at all the different aspects of game making, not just the 'make a game! 24 hours!' thing. Maybe one every fortnight and a 'drop as you do' approach.
It's an idea I've had for a while now. Would anyone be interesting in that kind of thing?

I always thought the point of release something day is to show what you have and what people think of it before it's too late. This is just an IMO though.

This isn't just an opinion, it's the whole point of Release Something. To release something so people don't have to keep on waiting for promised releases or could easily be used as a way to get feedback or ideas for people with their games.
Some games have improved a lot since participating in a release something, things you may not notice, others might. Plus more games to play all around because sharing is caring.
Rather than going "I have this awesome thing I've been working on. If an event comes up I'll release it!" or "I'd love to work on something for <event>!", why not just release what you want when you want regardless of there being an event? Seriously. Less events, more content. Wasn't this one of the reasons RS! was trashed?
Oh, and my excuse for not releasing anything? I don't have anything to release. Period. Zilch. Nada. Zero. kthxbai. ;D
As for the actual query on the events, I'd say Game Gale. Not that I'd join, but Game Chill proved interesting to watch.
