Medicare is the (GASP!) government health plan provided to you if you're over 65.

Medicaid is the (GASP! AGAIN!) government health plan provided to you if you're poor.

For me following the whole process from Obama's inauguration leading up to this bill was somewhat of a rollercoaster. On one hand you'd have to be clinically retarded to not identify the need for healthcare reform in the USA, on the other hand it's not hard to see the potential for disaster either. I am pretty relieved re: the resulting bill and I think more people would be too if they took the time to actually read the fucking thing and assess how little damage it's going to do. For the record I lean far to the right on issues with such big fiscal ramifications and if it were a case of "dem liberalz ruining 'mericuh" I would be soapboxing right at this very moment in this very thread, but anyone who thinks that about this particular issue is an honest-to-god retard.

That said I think it is inadequate in some many ways, i.e. the stopgaps they've put in place while they continue to actively work on patching up the holes in Medicare coverage are pretty laughable and, just like the existing schedule of TrOOP/coverage, don't appear to be rooted in either common sense OR the actual cost of drugs. On the other hand, as someone who has spent most of his working career self-insured, I'm optimistically hoping that government subsidies will result in less variation in cost vs quality of coverage and alleviate some of the bullshit that comes with dealing with an insurer as a private individual. Also, several of my closest friends are in a group that could benefit greatly from the Medicaid changes. It's all speculation until we actually see the whole implementation years from now, but in general this seems like a pretty good thing dudes. Is it enough? No. Should we have expected more given the huge clusterfuck leading up to it? Hell yeah, but we ARE talking about Congress here :p

tl;dr: People are bound to be disappointed with the short-term benefits and it's pretty weak on its own but this isn't the end of either potential US healthcare reform or the world. The fact that our federal legislature actually overcame the inertia to pass this bill is a good sign.

The way I look at it, a person threatening to kill someone else over the internet is a 100% clear indication that they are completely harmless. If anything we should be threatening each other as terms of endearment
