TOP TEN TOPIC: ROBOTS, DROIDS, CYBORGS OH MY!
Posts
It's that time of the week again! Time for RMN's most useless and mostly ignored thread. This week we examine the exciting world of ROBOTS. This week I want you to list of your favorite robots, androids, cyborgs, droid and any other mechanical characters from popular media, be it games, books, TV or movies.
So prepareto ignore me your list of...
Here's mine (as if you even care):
10. Mr. Butlertron
From Clone High, a one-season wonder cartoon from 2003. Is able to hold complex conversations in two distinct monotones....Wesley.
9. Marvin
From The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. He's so defeatist!
8. Astroboy
From Astroboy! I want red rocket boots.
7. R2-D2
From Star Wars. He seemed to be the only one with a clue in the stories. Probably the best actor in the entire series of movies, too.
6. T-1000
From T2: Judgement Day. As if a shapeshifting metallic puddle of futuristic AI machinery doesn't freak you out.
5. Starscream
From The Transformers. What a dink!
NEW!:
5. Megaman
From Megaman games (also Captain N!). How the hell did I miss the Blue Bomber?! This guy is awesome, and will whoop ass in Brawl when he is added.
4. Optimus Prime
From The Transformers. This guy is hardcore, wise, and tough. And pretty damn big. NEW: Starscream is cool, too!
3. Bender
From Futurama. Everyone's favorite sassy latino robot!
2. Data
From Star Trek: The Next Generation.
1. HK-47
From Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Statement: This is the best character to come out of video games in years. The droid is completely sadistic, in a non-chalant way.
Holy crap:
Didn't quite make the list:
C-3PO
Fembots
The Terminator
Robocop
Rosie (from the Jetsons)

Holy crap:
At the 2004 Game Developers Choice Awards, the HK-47 character won the category of "Original Game Character of the Year". This award "recognizes excellence in creating an original (non-licensed) character for games. The worldwide game development community nominates and votes on this award."
This character also won the "NPC of the Year" category in Computer Gaming World's "Game of the Year Awards" for the year 2003.

Robots!
RO-MAN: The villain of famous sci-fi film Robot Monster, Ro-Man looks more like a man in a gorilla suit with a diver's helmet and TV antenna (which he is) than an actual robot, but the sheer insanity of his design, combined with his ability to blow things to pieces with calcinator rays, makes him a force to be reckoned with in the robot world.
R2-D2: C3P0 isn't bad either, but R2-D2 beats him out through sheer usefulness. Not only can he control spaceships, store data and operate complex machinery, but he can even defend himself by blasting battle droids with oil, and then setting them on fire. Hooray!
ASTRO BOY: Possessing the powers of laser fingers, a machine gun on his side and a really great Treasure video game, Astro Boy is basically the oldest robot in Japanese manga and anime there is, and also one of the most famous.
MARVIN: One of the most distinct personalities in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy--and that's a lot, considering the zaniness of the cast of characters. Has the brain of a couple of planets, and is so consistently depressed that by connecting itself to ships, it can make them commit suicide. Niiice.
SHRIKE: Hailing from Phillip Reeves's Mortal Engines series, Shrike is one of the Resurrected Men; former soldiers brought back to life through old technology, turning them into nearly invincible cyborgs. For sheer gravitas and difficulty to kill, Shrike beats out most of the robots on this list, and, in fact, many of the characters in the Mortal Engines.
ROBO: Originally intended to annihilate all humans and populate future Guardia with robots, Robo takes a liking to a mechanic instead, eventually leaving his barren time for somewhere else. Known for shooting crazy shadow-element lasers all over the place and damaging all enemies, as well as for the famous "Robo Tackle".
ZERO and MEGAMAN: Who is better? On one hand, Megaman has a vast library of moves, the ability to absorb even more from arch-enemies, and the power to implement them. On the other hand, Zero has red armor and a crazy laser sword. I'd say it's roughly a tie...

1. Harry McDougal- From Outlaw Star. He's the only Robot/Droid/Cyborg/Mechanoidthing character from anything that I can think of that I like at all. But he's awesome. :p
...never seen any transformer type media (show/game/movie/comicbook/whateverelse) in my life. :p

Soundwave.
My list, in no particular order
HK-47
HK-51
HK-51
HK-51 (yes, these are all seperate characters)
Mr. B
Optimus Prime (The original)
Megatron (Beasties, yessssssss)
Jazz (Again, original)
Megabyte (if he counts)
Darth Vader (more machine than man = cyborg as I see it)
In no particular order:
Robo of CT fame.
Optimus Primal of Beast Wars - when Transformers were cool.
VOLTRON! Yeah!
C-3PO/R2D2 - Can't have one without the other!
Daleks - because they crack me up. *EX TER MI NATE*
Bender - self explanatory
Data from ST:NG
Chi from Chobits - 'cause she's just too cu~te!
Franky - One Piece Manga. With his speedo's and Hawaiian shirt. A cyborg.
Android 17 - DBZ.

I liked Android's 16 and 18 better. 17 was a prettyboy.
Robo from CT was okay. He was pretty tough, but too slow.

1. Optimus Prime (Transformers, any series)
Anyone who doesn't know who Optimus Prime is doesn't deserve to have access to the internet. He's the epitomy of a hero; strong, noble and wise. He also leads a team of transforming robots who like to fight other large robots. That is all you need to know, really.
2. Starscream (Transformers, any series)
Starscream is probably my favorite Transformers, but Prime gets the #1 nod because he's OPTIMUS FREAKING PRIME. I've always loved Starscream and his constant plotting and scheming. His personality is pretty cool (I love sarcasm) and his voice makes him unique. He's a great character to have in a series if you want lots of conflict.
3. Darth Vader (Star Wars movies)
He's more machine than man, which technically makes him a cyborg. He can freaking choke you from the other side of the galaxy and he has a cool mask. I'm also a sucker for redemption stores (aka, Darth Revan in KOTOR if you go light side).
4. Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime (Transformers G1)
Rodimus is everything Optimus wasn't - impatient and unsure of himself. However, he's not afraid to take risks and he makes for a better sound byte than Optimus. One day, I plan on getting a car and giving it Hot Rod's paint job.
5. HK-47 (Knights of the Old Republic I & II videogame)
Assassin droid, oh how I love thee. HK-47 is probably the best thing to come out of Star Wars in forever. His sarcasm should be studied at major universities and entire coursed developed around it. Also, he's pretty kick ass with a gun. But mostly the sarcasm.
6. Megatron/Galvatron (Transformers G1)
Megatron is fierce, powerful, decisive - in short, everything I want to be. He makes stupid mistakes from time to time (like not terminating Starscream), but it's mostly plot points to give the Autobots a chance. Galvatron was wicked cool in the original Transformers movie, but his character was lacking (sanity) in the third season.
7. Unicron (Transformers G1)
He's a transforming robot the size of a large planet. He has godlike powers and is a catalyst in the universe. He was also voiced by Orson Welles. What more can you ask for?
8. Sentinels (X-Men comics)
Sentinels are some of the best X-Men fodder in history; I particulary love when they try to attack Magneto and wonder why all their bolts are coming loose...
9. Bender (Futurama tv show)
When I first seen him I was hoping for a robot Homer. What I got was just as good, if not better. Him and Fry are perfect sidekicks.
10. Johnny Five (Short Circuit I & II movies)
I must confess, Short Circuit is a guilty pleasure of mine. "No disassemble, Johny Five!". Also, he has a badass mohawk in the second movie.

... I am disappointed by this thread.
WHY ARE THERE NO DALEKS??
Also:
1) The Daleks (Doctor Who)
2) Chii (Chobits)
3) Zero (Mega Man X/Zero series)
4) Bender (Futurama)
5) ... whatever the name of that robot from Lost in Space is.
6) Rodimus Prime (Transformers Movie)
... And now I see that Liberty is the only other person who sees the awesomeness of the Daleks. Anyways, continuing.
7) KOS-MOS (Xenosaga)
8) Data (ST: TNG )
9) Robo (Chrono Trigger)
10) HK-47 (Knights of the Old Republic)

I've had a hard time with this because I'm pretty certain that I have a favorite robot that is lovingly strange and obscure that have just slipped my mind. But let's see what robots I can come up with.
1. Marvin the Paranoid Android
With a single in the charts in the 80s this robot is the king of robots.
2. (if AIs counted then GLaDOS would be here. But since cyborgs count it's obviously)
2. Darth Vader
The only reason he isn't in first place is because he isn't robotic enough. To me he'll always be more man than machine and not the other way around. On a list of top robots Darth Vader is not the first thing that comes to mind.
3. Bender
Bite My Shiny Metal Ass
4. C3P0
I was thinking about putting R2-D2 first but then I remembered that the funnier one of the two is actually C3P0, his mannerisms and worries is always out of this world where R2-D2 brings the sensibility to their relationship. Of course R2-D2 is really part of this package so he won't get an individual entry.
5. Blade Runner Replicants (especially Rutger Hauer's character)
"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I've watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. All those... moments will be lost in time... like... tears..in the rain".
6. Bishop
Probably the more interesting of the androids in the Alien series. Not that I don't like the others of course.
7. Mega Man
He has an arm cannon. And is blue. And fairly easy to control in his platform jumping. What more can you ask for?
8. Pinocchio
The toy that came to life. How can one not love this little mechanical creature?
9. Morte
Speaking of Pinocchio I guess reanimated people (using magic) could be counted as robots too. (Golems... and undead!) Morte is just an awesome character in Planescape Torment though. Can't deny that.
10. Mother
The sentient washing machine from Someone Comes to Town, Someone Leaves Town is what comes to mind right now. I don't know why but it's such a strange character and so hard to understand but still fascinating.
There are a couple of robots that could possibly be up if I knew more about them. Namely the Cylons from Battlestar Galactica (I've only seen a couple of episodes) and the Daleks from Dr. Who (I've only seen a couple of episodes).

--Seven of Nine (Star Trek: Voyager) has great hair.
--Karen Garnet (Kinetic Cipher) has roller skates.
--Ziggy (Xenosaga) is hot.

--Optimus Prime (Transformers) is here so that holb doesn't have a reason to ban me.
--gemini (internet) has the intelligence of a 70's cardboard robot.
--3CPO (Star Wars, original (...second...) trilogy) is golden and shiny.
--Wilfred's Helmet (Wilfred, the Hero) hold the mysteries of the cosmos inside itself.
