Nintendo announced their next-gen handheld today. Backwards compatible with DS/DSi software. Will do 3D without special glasses. PR follows:
My take: probably involves the rumors of Nintendo going with NVidia's Tegra platform. They will need considerably tougher hardware to do anykind of stereoscopic display. Rumors have been floating around about devs having new DS hardware for a bit, with game dev cycles estimating to done at the end of this year.
I'll totally buy one. I have felt miffed by my DSi since the day I got it due to some physical defects.
Updated Info
Nikkei
- control stick instead of dpad
- rumble
- improved wireless speed and battery life
- screen that is smaller than 4 inches
- timing on the announcement could be related to decreased software releases
- Nikkei expects release in second half of 2010
Yomiuri Shimbun
- "it is believed that the system will use a Sharp 3D LCD panel."
- this 3d tech is acheived by placing a small film on the screen, which is separated by a small space. The slight differences in the image creates the 3d effect
Mainichi Shimbun
- software developers have been briefed on the system
- third party software at launch
Nintendo Co., Ltd. (Minami-ward of Kyoto-city, President Satoru Iwata) will launch "Nintendo 3DS"(temp) during the fiscal year ending March 2011, on which games can be enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses.
"Nintendo 3DS"(temp) is going to be the new portable game machine to succeed "Nintendo DS series", whose cumulative consolidated sales from Nintendo amounted to 125million units as of the end of December 2009, and will include backward compatibility so that the software for Nintendo DS series, including the ones for Nintendo DSi, can also be enjoyed.
We are planning to announce additional details at E3 show, which is scheduled to be held from June 15, 2010 at Los Angeles in the U.S.

I don't care much for 3D but I'm glad there's finally going to be a sizable improvement in the graphics department nonetheless (definitely buying one too; too bad it won't be released sooner, the top screen of my DS is messed up and I'd really like a replacement)
Wonder if the 3D will be like
Also didn't they announce a new DSi recently? Sonds like it's going to go the way of the GBA Micro
*edit*
Re: The 3D thing. Probably not, that uses head tracking and there seems to be some way of having 3D but only if the viewer is stationary and at a certain location (which I guess is a fair assumption)
Still feels like a cheap gimmick though :\

Apparently new info has come out stating it will be a special kind of screen and not head tracking.
I've heard there are special LCDs that produce different images based on the viewing angle which could produce a 3D effect without glasses. It requires the viewer to be at a certain position relative to the screen. I'm curious how well it will work.
Woah! Three Dimensional Technology! The future is truly here my friends, now I can experience an incredible amount of polygons any place on planet Earth.
Nintendo is the king of handheld gaming systems, you know.
I have a feeling that, since a 5th gen. Poke'mon has been recently announced, it's going to be on this new Nintendo 3DS.

i wonder if it'll work for people who can only see out of one eye.

I thought the touch screen was just a bad gimmick and I grew to like it(or not hate it). I think this is a GREAT gimmick so that only bodes well. Say what you want about Nintendo, they do get sales and stuff like this is why.
Booble, the 3D effect will most likely be lost for those with only one working eye.
post=130313New Nintendo DSWaggle! Waggle your DS to play games! It's just like real life!

It is if you are playing "Shaking Baby: The Game".
